The 12 days of follow up - Day 3

One of the easiest ways to keep in touch with clients, or potential clients, is through social media, particularly Facebook and LinkedIn, and if you're following the recommendations from yesterday's blog post, then you've already connected with them.

As most of you probably know, LinkedIn is a business based social media site. Even though I have an account there, I don't use it as much as I probably should. I first setup my account for my job with AT&T. I'm now using it primarily for my SendOutCards business, so I should probably weed out the AT&T stuff. LinkedIn is good to find out who's celebrating work anniversaries, promotions or new jobs,

However, Facebook is good for celebrating pretty much everything else...birthdays (FB will tell you when most of your friends are celebrating their birthday), anniversaries, kids' birthdays, weddings, the birth of a child or grandchild, the loss of a loved one, etc. You can send your client or prospect a post on their wall, a private message (PM), a text, a call or a card. And since most of your friends will post a photo also, you can include the photo in a card.

A few guidelines:
  • Don't post anything that's negative
  • Don't post about sports (no matter which team you like, some of your customers or prospects will hate that team and they may dislike you because of that)
  • Don't post about religion (your beliefs are your own and others may not share your beliefs and may be offended if you share them)
  • Don't post about politics (many people didn't follow this and lost many friends because of it)
  • Don't post about sex (many people take offense to anything sexual)
I saw a tweet on Twitter a while ago that said basically "If you're not smiling when you're on here, you're following the wrong people" be sure to keep things lighthearted.

But most importantly, don't constantly post about your business (unless you have a business page...and even there you'll want to break it up and share some things about your life also). This is where the Pareto Principle comes into play...make 80% (or more) of your Facebook posts about your life and only 20% (or less) about your business (reverse the percentages for your business page).

And if you haven't downloaded the SendOutCards app, go ahead and do so. It's free and if you're not already a SendOutCards customer or distributor the first three cards that you send are on me!
