Security vs Freedom #TBT

I came across this photo on Facebook the other day and it reminded me of this post from February 2013:

Most people say that they are looking for security, the good old 9 to 5 job. But I’m looking for people who want freedom. The freedom to do what you want, when you want without having to plan 6 months in advance to save your money and schedule your vacation.
Security and freedom are opposites…think of a prison…the person in maximum security has minimum freedom.
Borrowing from the Empower Network blog from yesterday
(/blog/dawn-of-the-vampire-slayers/?id=ricktompkins) (The video was cute, but I was expecting something more Buffyesque):

“The Lies of ‘Security’

Security isn’t secure.  So many seek after it, but the reality of security is a lie created to strip away the creative nature of man, and take the beautiful round or octagon peg that you are and viciously force you into a square hole.
Usually that square hole is a tiny cubicle…
…which comes fully equipped with a fancy pencil sharpener, an annoying coworker, a short lunch, and a smug boss that takes morbid pleasure in tormenting you…
…daily.

However, there is ‘light at the end of the tunnel.’

There is a  promises of a far off retirement where you can drive a motorhome around the country, when you are barely old enough to see, so that you can visit your grand-kids.
It’s a pretty shitty light to begin with, that usually flickers and dies before it ever burns.
Reality sets in when that dream isn’t realized, and rather that having the promised security, you salivate veraciously over the mailbox on the day that the postman drops off the social security check…
…and that isn’t even enough to cover the bills.”

Believe me, I’m just about at that latter point, realizing that after 32 years of working for the same company that I don’t have anything to show for it. No savings, minimal 401k, a house that will probably end up in foreclosure, 2 kids that are working at McDonald’s and Burger King. Is this the life I was planning for all of my life? No, it’s not, and the good thing is that it’s not too late to do something about it.
I’m looking for freedom and I’m looking for 3 other people during the month of March who are looking for freedom also. If you want security, good luck to you. But if you want freedom then check out this link on the 7/30/Q (which I blogged about not too long ago):https://www.sendoutcards.com/7-30-Q/.
Then join me in SendOutCards at www.sendoutcards.com/144087. If you don’t think SendOutCards may be suitable for you, that’s fine…you can also join me in Empower Network at /almostasecret.php?id=ricktompkins.
Remember that America was founded to provide freedom for its citizens, not security! Social Security didn’t make its appearance until the 1930′s.

A few of these things have changed. The link to the Empower Network blog doesn't work. SendOutCards doesn't have the 7/30/Q plan anymore although if you sign up 3 Preferred Customers in your first 30 days, you do get your $50 distributor sign-up fee back. And I'm not doing Empower Network anymore. The boys both work at Round Table now and the house was sold at a short sale. And I'm still looking for people who are interested in time freedom and financial freedom.

It all starts with a great idea

Today's post is from Harvey Mackay:

J.M. Haggar was fascinated with Henry Ford’s idea of the production line and mass production.  He thought if cars can be mass-produced, why can’t men’s fine trousers and at popular prices?

Many clothing manufacturers doubted Haggar’s potential.  But he proved them wrong. Using leftover suit fabrics instead of denim, Haggar made a new kind of dress pants called “slacks,” and in the process revolutionized the men’s clothing industry.
The first lesson in all my corporate speeches is creativity.  I think it is that important.  Creativity is not rocket science.  It’s just finding a new or improved way to do anything.

J.M. Haggar did exactly that and became a household name.

When I am giving a speech, I prepare by talking to 8-10 people who will be in the audience to try and find creative stories.  I hit the jackpot recently when I spoke to a couple real estate agents.

One told me that he traveled to India for his brother’s wedding in 1999.   He brought along a portable SOLD sign and posed with it in front of the Taj Mahal.  He used that photo as a postcard to send out to his clients.  It read “One man built the greatest monument to love the world has ever seen.”  Below, in smaller print, he wrote, “I just sell real estate, but I do it with great passion.”
His clients still talk about that postcard years later.  He’s done other versions featuring Buckingham Palace and Mount Rainier.  These have helped him stand out in his local market.

Another realtor told me that she scours current listings by competitors.  She then sends out a large red mailing tube with a fuse that looks like a stick of dynamite.  Inside is a large flyer that reads:  “BAM!  Your listing has expired!  Do you want to know why?”  She gets lots of replies.

She also mails letters introducing herself.  Then she sends a second mailing – she crumples up the first letter and writes on the outside – “Don’t throw me away again!”  She gets lots of responses to this second mailing.

Another realtor in the Twin Cities told me about a marketing opportunity that she jumped on.  She is a big fan of the Cities 97 Sampler – a music CD produced by a local radio station – that Target sells exclusively every November to benefit local charities.  On release day, people line up hours ahead at every Target store, waiting to buy the disc.  Nine years ago, while waiting in line, she realized that she had ready-made prospects.  For the last eight years, she has passed out hot coffee, breakfast bars and hand warmers along with her contact information, introducing herself and working the crowd.  She donates 3 percent of her commissions generated from this event to the same charities.  She lists and sells 5-6 homes each year from this event.

What do they have in common?  They took something familiar in a different direction.  That’s creativity.  Here’s how to follow their example:
  • Crossbreed your ideas.  Instead of looking for one great idea, grab hold of two good ideas and look for interesting connections and juxtapositions.  Reptiles and airplane disaster movies were unrelated concepts until someone came up with Snakes on a Plane.
  • Refine other ideas.  Don’t directly steal anyone else’s work, but look at what’s been done with an eye toward doing it differently.
  • Repeat.  Analyze what you’ve already done, and try creating it all over again.  Chances are you’ll find a way to improve it, or at least give it a fresh angle.  You may also find a way to save time or use new resources by exploring what you’re already comfortable with.
But back to Henry Ford.  He hired an efficiency expert to go through his plant.  “Find the nonproductive people,” he instructed.  “Tell me who they are, and I will fire them!”
The expert made the rounds with his clipboard in hand and finally returned to Ford's office with his report.  “I've found a problem with one of your administrators,” he said.  “Every time I walked by, he was sitting with his feet propped up on the desk.  The man never does a thing.  I definitely think you should consider getting rid of him!”
When he learned the name of the man the expert was referring to, Ford shook his head and said, “I can't fire him.  I pay that man to do nothing but think – and that's what he's doing.”

Mackay's Moral:  Great ideas don’t have to be new – just improved!

Ego Is the Enemy

This is an interesting look at ego and how too much of it can be a bad thing. This is a podcast from The Art of Manliness.

Listen to the podcast here.

In the quest to become the men we want to be, we’re often our own worst enemies, especially when it comes to our egos. Ego is what prevents us from being humble and teachable when we’re first starting out in an endeavor. It blinds us to our own weaknesses during success, and it can cause us to wallow in self-pity when we fail. My guest today on the podcast has recently published a book filled with insights from history on how ego can get in the way of our success and what we can do to mitigate its downsides.

His name is Ryan Holiday and his book is Ego Is the Enemy. Today on the show, we look at examples from history of eminent men whose hubris caused their downfall, and others who were able to successfully harness their ego to attain greatness. We also discuss steps that you can take to prevent ego from causing you to stumble.

Show Highlights

  • What is ego [02:00]
  • How ego is related to hubris and what the Ancient Greeks did to help them keep their hubris in check [04:00]
  • How our modern culture of self-esteem and self-promotion is actually hurting our individual and societal progress [05:00]
  • Why most people think outside forces are thwarting their progress when it’s actually their own ego [07:00]
  • The three phases in any endeavor where you need to check your ego [11:30]
  • Why people who’ve been successful are often the most susceptible to failure [15:00]
  • What General Sherman can teach you about staying humble when you’re first starting your career and once you’ve gained success [17:00]
  • How General Grant’s success as a Civil War commander caused him to bite off more than he could chew by running for president [21:30]
  • What John Boyd can teach us about not letting our ego get in the way when we begin an endeavor [26:30]
  • Why passion is overrated and you should focus on purpose [31:30]
  • Why success can lead to your downfall [36:30]
  • What you can learn from Genghis Khan about staying humble in victory [37:00]
  • Why routine, planning, and discipline become more important after you’ve gained success [38:30]
  • How not being able to delegate is a sign of ego [44:30]
  • How ego is your enemy when you fail [47:00]
  • Can ego be your friend? [52:00]

Happy #PineappleDay

Today is Pineapple Day and I thought it'd be fun to write about it. Especially since I love pineapple it seemed like an even better idea.

According to Wikipedia:
The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical plant with edible multiple fruit consisting of coalesced berries, also called pineapples,[2][3] and the most economically significant plant in the Bromeliaceae family.[4]
Pineapples may be cultivated from a crown cutting of the fruit,[2][5] possibly flowering in 20–24 months and fruiting in the following six months.[5][6] Pineapples do not ripen significantly post-harvest.[7]
Pineapples can be consumed fresh, cooked, juiced, or preserved. They are found in a wide array of cuisines. In addition to consumption, the pineapple leaves are used to produce the textile fiber piña in the Philippines, commonly used as the material for the men's Barong Tagalog and women's Baro't saya formal wear in the country. The fiber is also used as a component for wallpaper and other furnishings.[8]
I like pineapple many different ways...fresh is always good. My friend Joe likes to barbecue pineapple which is also very good. A lot of people don't like Hawaiian pizza, but I like pineapple and ham or Canadian bacon on a pizza. I also love pineapple upside down cake...in fact, here's a recipe. And when I was on a Windjammer cruise in the early 80's, my favorite drink on the cruise ship was rum and pineapple juice.

Pineapples are also featured in nearly every episode of "Psych" and you can find a list of the pineapples in the various episodes here.

And "pineapple" was used as the distress signal in a "Black Friday" episode of "Chuck"

And of course, who can forget Spongebob?

Quality of life paycheck #TBT

Here is a post from October 2014.

Two FB posts re-tasked:

What does the term "quality of life paycheck" mean to you? And does your paycheck provide it?

AND

I think the concept of a "quality of life" paycheck is especially important to people my age…people who have retired or are about to retire.
What kind of quality of life can you expect from Social Security and Medicare? Living in an unheated apartment, eating cat food and not being able to afford your medicine? Or what about your 201k? That's what you have left after half of your 401k disappeared. The problem with all of these plans is that the government decides how much you get and when. What if you're really lucky and you get a pension? You've got a little more money, but now your former employer decides how much you get and when.
Do you think you'll have the quality of life you've always planned for yourself if somebody else decides how much you get paid and when you get it. Do you think that your quality of life is uppermost in their minds as they mail your check to you?
Ask me about another quality of life paycheck option.

The 5 Principles of Moonlighting Success

This is a very fascinating, albeit long, post from The Art of Manliness so I'll just touch on the highlights here. You can click on the link above for the full article (which I highly recommend).

Moonlighting Success Principle #1: Make the Most of Your Spare Time (You’ve Got More of It Than You Think)

We all have many hours, although not always in a row, that we can use to build a side business or work at a side job. Your goal is to stop (or at least reduce) your time wasting activities, such as TV, internet, etc.

A network marketing business is usually easy to fit into those little pockets of time that you have during the day.

Moonlighting Success Principle #2: Consistently Maximize the Time You Do Have

Work consistently and diligently to get you to where you want to be.

Moonlighting Success Principle #3: Try to Make the Best of Your Day Job (It May Have More Advantages Than You Think)

Don't give up your day job! At least, not right away. Having a job can provide a base to work from...whether financially or psychologically.  It's often difficult to concentrate on what you love to do if you have to worry about where your next meal is coming from.

Moonlighting Success Principle #4: Be Patient and Take Things Step-by-Step

Don't rush! You don't need to quit your day job right away. Give your side hustle time to develop. It often takes quite a bit of time for your job or business to develop. And even if you do see substantial growth right away, you want to give it time to mature and to get past the growing pains.

Moonlighting Success Principle #5: Don’t Make Excuses About Circumstances and Distractions — Just Get Going and Stay Going!

As Nike says: "Just do it!". And as they say in network marketing "Any excuse will do". If you really want to make a go of your side job or business, don't make excuses as to why you can't do it. Just get started and do it.

There are many choices for a side job or side business. I'm very partial to network marketing because as I said under #1 above, it's easy to fit it into the idle moments of your life. It's also inexpensive to get started...usually less than $1,000 and often quite a bit less. And you can get tax write offs that aren't available if you get a job. There are many great companies out there to choose from but I highly recommend the company that I'm involved with: SendOutCards...it only costs $50 to start your business, there's no inventory to deal with, it can be operated entirely from your smartphone and it's a product that nearly everyone in the world enjoys receiving and sending!

Happy first day of summer

Today is the summer solstice, otherwise known as the first day of summer!

The summer solstice is actually an astronomical phenomenon that's related to the tilt of the earth. The north pole is tilted at an angle of about 23 1/2 degrees from it's axis. During summer in the northern hemisphere, the north pole is tilted towards the sun and on the day of the solstice it marks the farthest north that the sun will reach...that point, 23 1/2 degrees north of the equator is known as the Tropic of Cancer. In the southern hemisphere, today marks the first day of winter since the south pole is pointed away from the sun.

The solstice occurs sometime between June 20th and June 22nd since the earth doesn't take exactly 365 days to orbit the sun.

I'm a summer person. I like the heat and the beach and the cold beverages and the women's clothing. I like surf music. I like the relaxed attitude.

And this year, we'll also get to enjoy a full moon which only occurs on the summer solstice every 70 years or so. The moon and the sun are supposed to be visible at the same time. So, enjoy the longest day of the year and a bright full moon to let you extend the festivities well into the night!
