Yesterday we talked about your personal vision and how to create your own 2020 Vision. Today we'll talk about creating your personal mission statement.

What is a personal mission statement?

A personal mission statement can be thought of as being a personal constitution and while a personal vision statement looks at the future, a personal mission statement looks at the present.

A personal mission statement captures who you want to be and what you want to do. It becomes the basis for making daily decisions in the midst of circumstances and emotions that affect your life.

Here is an excellent website on what a mission statement is and how to create your own http://wvde.state.wv.us/insite/files/Developing%20Your%20Own%20Personal%20Mission%20Statement.pdf

I still have to create my mission mission statement, so I guess I have some work to do.

Now how do you get from where you are to where you want to be? Goals.

Today I'm going to talk about vision. Not seeing with your eyes, but seeing with your mind.

There are lots of articles about business vision and mission statements, but this article is about personal vision statements, although it can also apply to your small business.

This is part of an ongoing series, last week I talked about goals, objectives, activities, tasks and strategies (GOATS) and this series will continue with

I thought I saw a pyramid that also included activities, tasks and strategies but I'm not able to find it again.

What is a personal vision statement?

A personal vision statement is a short statement, maybe a paragraph or less, that describes where you want to be at some future point. It can describe who you will be as a person, what you want to be doing, with whom and where. It can also be described as a personal growth statement.

You can pick any point in the future…next month, next year, 5 - 10 years down the road. Or as Stephen Covey says in "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People"

What does he mean by "Begin with the end in mind"? Imagine that you're watching your own funeral. Who will be there? What will they say about you? What do you want to have accomplished during your lifetime? How will you be remembered? These are the questions you'll want to answer to prepare your long term vision statement. But long term is relative…if you're in your 20's long term can be 50 years in the future, but if you're in your 50's or 60's long term can be 5 - 10 years.

An end of life vision statement is probably a good thing to have, but I'm going to be writing about something more short to intermediate term, what I call your 2020 Vision. Where do you see yourself in the year 2020, which is just over 5 years away?

Even though the vision statement describes a future time, it is written in the present tense, as if it's happening now. The use of "I am" statements is very powerful.

The Process of the “I AM” – Excerpts from Promptings

“When you create an “I AM” statement, visualize it, and state your compelling “why,” your subconscious mind goes into action delivers exactly what you tell it. You have all heard the saying, “You better be careful what you wish for because you might get it.” It’s amazing how true those words are. When you write these statements, make sure you know what you are saying because that is exactly what you will get. Write your statements, visualize them as best as you can, state your “whys” using all the senses, and keep sending yourself this message over and over.” – Kody Bateman
Here are a couple of tools to help you get started http://www.mentoringgroup.com/personalv1.html and http://www.mentoringgroup.com/personalv2.html. The second includes a sample personal vision statement to give you some ideas.

Here is a rough draft of my personal 2020 vision statement

I am retired from my 35+ year career with AT&T. I'm traveling around the world teaching others about the SendOutCards business opportunity. My job is my vacation so I get to spend time with my friends, wherever they may be in the world because I have the time and financial freedom to visit them. I am loving my happy and fit lifestyle.
This was just off the top of my head…I haven't followed the activities in the links above, so there may be some changes made.

Please feel free to share your 2020 vision statement by leaving a comment below.

I had a good one on one meeting with Curtis Smith at Cozy Diner in Paradise. We talked very little about business and spent time getting to know each other, although I did find out that he sells a combination flashlight and stun gun…I guess that could come in handy.

I listened to Casey Eberhart's weekly call tonight (it's amazing how many calls I can listen to during my commute). Although his call was mainly about business there was one general tip that I'm going to apply, which was start your New Year's resolutions now…figure out what you're going to do and get a headstart on it. That way when January 1 comes around you can hit the ground running.

Not a lot to share today, except the Treat 'em Right Seminar this weekend. I've been to 3 of them and they're always a lot of fun (and educational, too).

Friday Training
Business Opportunity followed by the Simple Success System Training with President of Field Operations, Steve Schulz and other top leaders.

Date: Friday, September 26, 2014
Time: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Saturday Treat'em Right Seminar
The purpose of the TER Seminar is to align your mind with success and learn the process of how we can truly change the world one card at a time. Kody Bateman, Founder and CEO of SendOutCards, has developed an inspiring message and unforgettable experience that instructs you on becoming your best self and then acting on who you are to change the lives of those around you.

Date: Saturday, September 27, 2014
Time: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Keynote Speaker:
Kody Bateman, Founder and CEO

Featured Speakers:
Margie Aliprandi
Leslie Zann

Trainers:
VP of Marketing - Vanessa Hunter
Executive - Casey Eberhart

The Friday training is an introduction to the SendOutCards business opportunity, but the Saturday Seminar, even though presented by SOC is really generic personal development. The tickets for either or both days are free, just let me know that you're interested in going and I'll give you my distributor number. Or I can order the tickets for you. I'm trying to make it down there myself.

Here's the link if you want to take a look at it: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/orange-county-ca-treatem-right-seminar-registration-12564519817?ref=ecount

This is from an old Facebook post, but I thought it was appropriate especially with the holidays coming up:

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine this:

You walk into your local Hallmark store and the cashier tells you that you're the 1 millionth customer and that you can pick out any 50 cards in the store for free!

Go ahead. Close your eyes. Imagine picking out birthday cards, anniversary cards, holiday cards, etc.

Now imagine that you also get a stamp on any 2 of the envelopes.

Now imagine that instead of having to go to the store and picking out the cards now, you can pick them out from home, on your computer, and that you can have up to a year to select them.

Now further imagine that you can add your own pictures to any of the cards.

Or instead of 50 cards you can select gifts instead.

Now, stop imagining and contact me.

SendOutCards will make that offer and you don't even have to be the 1 millionth customer. Just a new one.

Thursday, September 18, 2014

I had an assignment from Michele Reynolds to describe something to celebrate. This is the email that I sent her:

Michele,

My perfect day will consist of me waking up early (although I was too excited to really sleep). I will shave, shower and get dressed. Then I will head down to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. What shall I have? Hmmm. It seems like a good day for my lucky breakfast…oatmeal, toast and orange juice.

Then I head over to the meeting hall where the 2015 SendOutCards Convention is being held. There is a lot of excitement in the air. I see quite a few people that I know. The doors finally open. They open a few minutes early, but it seems like an eternity.

The program is going well. Kody has the crowd going. There have been some speakers. But now is the moment I've been waiting for! All Senior Managers are invited to the stage. I hear my name announced and I walk across the stage, shaking hands with Jordan, DeMarr, Bob and Betty Ann; all of the Senior Executives and Executives. I've met a few of them over the past few years, but this is the first time I've gotten to meet most of them.

Lunchtime. I can't seem to get the morning's events out of my mind. A few of my friends come up and congratulate me. I'm still numb. I thank them but it really hasn't sunk in. I'm now a leader in the company and I've been recognized as such in front of thousands of people.

The day continues. More training. More announcements (what did Kody just say? I can't believe it!), more cheering.

I head back to the hotel. Exhausted. I get ready to head down to dinner, but I lie on the bed for just a minute. What's that? My alarm is going off. Time for another exciting day.

What would you celebrate? An anniversary? A birthday? A promotion at work? Feel free to let me know. You don't have to go into as much detail as this, just a quick description of what you'd be celebrating,

Successful Thinkers Network meeting

I went to the Successful Thinkers Network meeting this afternoon at Cozy Diner here in Paradise. This is the first meeting I've been to here and the second STN meeting I've been to. The first was in Alameda sometime last year.

For those of you not familiar with STN, it's a networking group that normally meets on a regular basis. The group here meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at noon at Cozy Diner on Skyway. There is usually a speaker. Today's speaker was Nate Wright, who talked about uncovering your why. Discussing your business isn't allowed at the meeting, but you can setup a 1 on 1 meeting with another member to  get to know each other better and to discuss your businesses, I have a meeting setup for next week.

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/apple-dumpling-day/ I forgot to check if Cozy Diner has it :-(

Tomorrow - Lora Sjolin and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cheeseburger-day/ I celebrated a day early. And it's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hug-a-greeting-card-writer-day/ Ask me how you can become a greeting card writer and get hugged on this day

October 17 - Luci Gabel and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/wear-something-gaudy-day/  I don't think I have anything. Oh wait! I do have my official 1st day of summer shirt, which normally only gets worn one day a year. Am I radical enough to break tradition?

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

Not really much to write about today. Spent some time by the pool again today. Haven't really done a lot with my business since I've moved, although I'm going to the Paradise Successful Thinkers meeting tomorrow at noon.

Tomorrow I'll have a report on how the meeting was (and also if they have apple dumplings…see below).

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/guacamole-day/ I haven't had any recommendations of places in Paradise, so I don't know where I'm going to go today

Tomorrow - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/apple-dumpling-day/ Maybe the Cozy Diner, where they're holding the Successful Thinkers meeting will have some

Next Tuesday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/restless-legs-awareness-day/ Glad I don't have it, but I know people who do

October 16 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/boss-day/ If you like your boss, send them a card. If not, fire them. I happen to like my boss, but I'm still looking forward to firing her in about 2 years

Random musings

Staycation

I'm enjoying my staycation in Paradise. I was off Wednesday and Thursday last week and all of this week. My big plans include lying out by the pool several more times and going to the Paradise Successful Thinkers meeting on Wednesday. Looks like it's going to be a jam packed week of fun!

"Trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let 50 cents"

OK, I know rooms to let are going for more than 50 cents, but if you or someone you know would like to make some extra money I'm looking for a room to rent 4 days a week in the Bay Area…the closer to San Ramon the better.

Interesting days

I'm expanding my interesting days list to include birthdays.

Today - Joe Johnson and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/make-a-hat-day/ I didn't let my inner milliner shine today. Did you?

Tomorrow - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/guacamole-day/ Anybody know anyplace good in Paradise?

Next Monday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ice-cream-cone-day/ Two questions: What's your favorite flavor(s)? And where do you like to get it?

October 15 - Gary Washburn and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/take-your-parents-to-lunch-day/ Great day for a birthday, Gary!

Another FB re-tasking :-)

Have you been thinking about starting your own business?

Let me tell you why now is the best time to start your home based SendOutCards business.

1) There's still time to get tax deductions for your home based business for 2014
2) You can possibly earn $50 during your first week
3) You get 100 points when you sign up as a distributor. You can send all, or at least most, of your holiday cards just for the cost of postage!
4)  Last, but not least, you get to work with me :-)

Another FB post re-tasked!

Free holiday cards?

Do you buy boxes of generic holiday cards for your friends and family?

What if you could send one card to your family, another to friends? It doesn't matter whether they celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, or the winter solstice you can send as many different cards as you like and the first 30-50 will be free (depending on whether you add photos or drawings). And the postage will be paid on the first two cards you send. If you need more cards, you can buy more for as low as 62¢ each.

These are not ecards! These are genuine high quality greeting cards sent through the postal system to anywhere in the world.

Contact me for more information.

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/make-your-bed-day/ Did you?

Tomorrow - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chocolate-milk-shake-day/ I'm looking for someplace good here in Paradise

November 11 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/origami-day/ I guess I'll have to go to the library and find an origami book

Is Pinterest obsolete?

I just now created a Pinterest account, mainly to see what it looks like before it disappears.

Why do I say it's obsolete? You can share photos, pin or favorite the photos of others and you can even send it by email to somebody, but you can't create a greeting card to share, collect or favorite the greeting cards of others, or send the greeting card by the postal service.

There is a new social media platform, www.sendcere.com/144087 where you can do all of that stuff. And get paid when somebody sends a card!

The network marketing (or MLM) business model

Network marketing, otherwise known as multilevel marketing, is not a pyramid scheme, at least not with legitimate companies. Instead it's a growing way of doing business.

What do Netflix, iTunes and Amazon have in common (besides almost completely eliminating their traditional business model based competitors?) They were built almost entirely by word of mouth! But did you get paid for telling your friends about it?

What do Amway, doTERRA, NuSkin, Rodan and Fields, Visalus and SendOutCards have in common? They were built almost entirely by word of mouth! But you get paid for telling your friends about it!

What is so attractive about network marketing? From the company's point of view, they don't have to pay millions of dollars upfront to an advertising agency for an ad campaign that may or may not work. Instead, independent distributors pay you, usually a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, for the right to distribute your product to their friends and family. What about from the distributor's point of view? You get paid to share something you like with your friends and family. Over and over! Since I'm with SendOutCards, I'll use them as an example. Anytime one of my customers buys points to purchase cards or gifts, I get paid. Every time! If one of my customers (or somebody else) decides they want to get paid for sharing SendOutCards with their friends and family, not only do they get paid every time one of their customers buys points, so do I! That's where the network (or multilevel) part comes in.

To find out more about the SendOutCards opportunity, watch the videos at www.sendoutcards.com/144087. The 10 minutes you spend watching the 3 videos just might change your life.

Interesting Days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/good-neighbor-day/ I met another neighbor today when I went to the mailbox. His name is Tom. He's lived here for 10 years and he lives on the other side of the pool. Our neighborhood is built in a circle, with the pool in the middle.

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

Here is a post from FB that I've re-tasked as a blog post:

Which of the following is your retirement plan?

A. "Would you like fries with that?"
B. "Would you like a cart while shopping at Walmart?"

Even if, or especially if, you're planning on living on your 401k you'll need extra income.

The whole selling point of the 401k was that you'd be in a lower tax bracket when you retire. But many, if not most, retirees are finding themselves in the highest tax brackets of their lives and without their mortgage or dependent deductions they were used to. These people are often taking on jobs just to be able to pay their tax bills.

The 401k was designed by the government to be able to continue collecting taxes after people retire and no longer have any income to be taxed. It was NOT designed to help out the taxpayer.

What if there was a third option?

C. Own your own business?

Now, many of your normal expenses are now at least partially deductible, your rent or mortgage, your cell phone bill, your Internet provider, meals, travel, entertainment and more.

But what if you don't make any money? That's ok. Your expenses may be able to offset your income from other sources.

I'm not a tax lawyer or accountant, so I can't give you any advice. But check with a professional to find out how a home based business applies to your personal situation.

And contact me to find out about a home based business that may suit you.

And here's the list of interesting days:

I had a great time yesterday in Fresno at the SendOutCards Road Tour with Steve Schulz, President of Field Operations, and Jordan Adler, SOC's number one money earner.

Again, Mary Swarts and the whole SOC TNT (Today, Not Tomorrow) team did an excellent job of putting together the event! Although, the highlight for me was winning a pack of the delicious sea salt caramels…yum!

I was going to write more about it, but I seem to have waited too long and lost my momentum! Maybe I'll add to it later…or you can look on Facebook…www.facebook.com/rick.tompkins.1232

As far as interesting days coming up we have:

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/be-late-for-something-day/ which is an interesting juxtaposition with

Tomorrow - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fight-procrastination-day/ What are you going to do that you've been putting off?

Next Friday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chocolate-milk-shake-day/ I'm there!

October 5th - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-teachers-day/ Bring your favorite teacher an apple. Or take them out to lunch or dinner!

Not much to write about today. I'm about to spend the next 5 hours on the road heading to Fresno to hear Steve Schulz and Jordan Adler speak at http://www.eventbrite.com/e/simple-success-event-with-jordan-adler-steve-schulz-tickets-11837431075?aff=efbnen.

Wednesday, September 3, 2014

One of the things I want to do in this blog is to highlight interesting days, so starting today I will highlight today, tomorrow, next week and next month.

To begin with (even though it's still officially Wednesday), today is https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/newspaper-carrier-day/

Tomorrow will be https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cheese-pizza-day/, a very important day (although I personally prefer lots of toppings on mine!)

Next Thursday will be https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/make-your-bed-day/, they say that making your bed everyday is a habit of successful people.

And on this day next month: https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/card-making-day/, a very appropriate day for my business!

But, before I leave what's happening today (it feels strange writing about Thursday, while it's still Wednesday…but I'm following Days of the Year's lead): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/simple-success-event-with-jordan-adler-steve-schulz-tickets-11837431075. This is a great SendOutCards event that will be held in Fresno today! Let me know if you'd like to attend and I'll get a ticket for you

Tuesday, September 2, 2014

Another post from my phone. I'm at work again. I didn't have time to post earlier but this is my last day at work for this week. Yay! Gotta love these 2 day work weeks.

I tried to post my blog onto Facebook yesterday, but I don't think it worked. I'm going to try tonight with this one. It did post to Google+, so if we're friends over there you should be able to view it.

Still planning on going to Fresno on Thursday, so should have a fairly decent blog post after that event.

Since I'm off tomoorow, I'm hoping to have more to write about.

Hopefully this'll post to FB now.

Monday, September 1, 2014

I'm doing this from my phone so I'm not sure how it'll turn out!

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge didn't go so well! I figured at least some of my friends would've paid $395 to see me shivering and looking like a drowned rat. But I was wrong. However, the rest of the challenge is still standing. I will still donate $100 to ALS for everybody who signs up as a Marketing Distributor with SendOutCards and gives away 2 free accounts by Sunday. Go to www.sendoutcards.com/144087 to learn more about becoming a distributor. There's nothing there about the ALS challenge. That's my idea.

Thursday evening Steve Schulz and Jordan Adler will be in Fresno. I'll add the Eventbrite link later.

I guess that's it for now.
