Late blog post today

I'm in Paradise today, having a garage sale with my sister. She's moving and I need to get the rest of my stuff out of there. I rented a U-Haul but I was hoping I wouldn't have anything to put in it but I'm afraid that I'll have some more things to put into storage.

Sitting in the DMV blues

No blog post today. I realized that my driver's license has expired and I need it to rent a U-Haul truck tomorrow. It's almost impossible to do the interesting days from my phone.

Custom branding

SendOutCards has just introduced custom branding. What does it mean? It means that you can now design the back panel of your greeting cards. You can add a custom logo, photos or just more space to type.

You can create up to 10 custom card back panels, with or without the return address. If you need additional designs, you can edit an existing design, or delete one and create a new one. But you can only have 10 active at a time.

When you create a card or a campaign, you can choose which card back to use as you create the card.

There is a one time fee of $149 for the ability to create custom back panels, as well as a custom handwriting font and 4 signatures to use inside your cards (a $25 value) and a $49 annual renewal fee.

Any new or existing customer or distributor has access to the custom branding package right now. All you have to do is go to Account -> Purchase Products and select 11442 Custom Branding Package.

Here are some examples of what people have done so far:

All of these examples have the addresses in the upper left corner, but you do have the option of not including the addresses. The lower right corner is reserved for the barcode.

Donating platelets today

I woke up early, shaved and showered. I'm about to head out the door to go to the blood center in Fairfield to donate platelets. I haven't given platelets in at least 3 years, although I've given whole blood a few times.

Since I'm heading out the door I don't have time for interesting days, but I will be back with a full blog tomorrow.

No blog post today

I took some Robitussin Nighttime Cough DM and didn't feel like getting up, so I slept in. But that means that I'm missing the 3rd Ben & Jerry's networking event and Casey Eberhart's "Double Your Check" call and the SendOutCards corporate call announcing the new Custom Branding Package. Here are some examples of what people have done to the backs of their greeting cards during the beta test. Good thing there are replays!

The Happiest Place on Earth

I've always loved Disneyland. Even though I had the flu the 1st time I went in 5th grade and spent most of the trip being sick, I still had a great time. The second time, my sister and I were on spring break from college and wanted something fun to do, so we drove to Anaheim in my little Fiat 850 Spyder

If any of you have driven the Grapevine, 850 CC is not much power going over that hill, but we survived. We didn't have any reservations, but we managed to find a motel with a vacancy. I'm not sure how many days we stayed there…probably just over the weekend.

Then in the 80's I went down there pretty much every year. My roommate, Tom, had a friend who lived in Fullerton and a bunch of us would go down for 4th of July weekend! I also went one time with AT&T back in 1985. I was actually living in New Jersey at the time. I was teaching a 2 day class across the country and I had 2 classes in Anaheim. So I spent a week down there, so of course I went to Disneyland. Fortunately, my sister and her husband were down there at the same time so we got to go together.

We went there on out honeymoon in 1988. We were married at the very end of 1987, but I couldn't get the time off work until several months later. We went again when Danny was about a year and a half, so the end of 1990. I thought we were going to continue taking trips down there, but it turns out that the spouse and kids don't like to travel. Our next trip to Disneyland was for my 50th birthday in 2006. Even though it's not possible to have a bad time at Disneyland, this was awfully close.

I did go to Anaheim again about 2 years ago, after I was separated, but I wasn't able to make it. Bummer!

But this year, I'm going to Disneyland and I WILL have fun. In September SendOutCards will be having its annual convention at the Disneyland Hotel.  If you'd like to go on a business trip to Disneyland during their 60th anniversary celebration, just ask me how.

The 60th anniversary celebration begins today!

But not only that, I will be having a Facebook contest soon where I will be giving away a trip for 4 to Disneyland. Details soon.

Upcoming networking events

I'm going to 3 networking events over the coming week and they're all related.

The one at 4:30 tonight is in Berkeley at WeWork which is a co-working space similar to Laptop Lounge or Third Workplace, both in Walnut Creek.  On Sunday, I'll be networking at one on my favorite places in the world, Jack London Square! And next Tuesday I'll be going to Eleve Restaurant in Walnut Creek.

The thing that relates these three events is that they're all part of Ben & Jerry's "Save our Swirled" tour where they'll be giving out free scoops of ice cream! Chunky Monkey anyone?

Interesting days

Today - I probably won't be able to celebrate https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/one-day-without-shoes-day/ since I'll be networking and then working. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/i-need-a-patch-for-that-day/ I remember these well!

My life in show business

My show business career began before the age of seven (days). I was born on a Sunday and my mom got out of the hospital on Mother's Day which was the following Sunday. I don't think there were any complications, I just think this was typical of childbirth at the time (1956). But back to show business. I modeled the latest in diapers and helped the nurses show how to put them on properly.

When I was in 2nd grade (around 1964) my brother, sister and I (and the kid my mom was babysitting, Billy Young) went on a local kids' show, Captain Satellite.

I got to sit in the pilot's seat, although I didn't have a cool uniform like the Captain!

About 2 years later, I was in my driveway breaking boards. This isn't as strange as it sounds since my dad was always remodeling the house and there were scraps of wood lying around (although sometimes they weren't scraps!) and my friend Greg's dad had a kung fu school in his garage! Greg's dad, James, gave free lessons to Greg's friends so I took a few over the years. While I was breaking boards, one of James' friends came over to me and said he was going to be on TV.

Yes, I lived across the street from Bruce Lee when I was growing up. A few of the things I remember most about "Uncle Bruce", which is what my friend, Greg Lee, called him (even though they weren't related) was how nice he was to the neighborhood kids. He would often do demos of stopping his heart, or 2 finger pushups

I also remember being invited over to have a slice of wedding cake when Bruce and Linda got married. I knew their son, Brandon, when he was a baby. And their dog Bobo.

Quite a few years later, in the early 90's, I was working at AT&T in Pleasanton. The guy I sat next to for a couple of years, Jim Givens, and I were talking about Bruce Lee and he mentioned that his wife also took lessons from James Lee when she was in college. He asked if I remembered a college girl named Dani, and I told him I didn't. He then said that everyone remembered her roommate, Sharon. Yes, I did remember Sharon! My brother, Dave, who was probably about 8 or 9 at the time, picked Sharon some flowers and gave them to her. I think he told her that he loved her. If you know my brother, you know that's very uncharacteristic of him.

I took drama in junior high school, partly because of Bruce. I went to Parkmead Intermediate in Walnut Creek, CA in 7th grade and then Bret Harte Junior High School , in Oakland, for 8th and 9th grades. There was a young man in my drama classes who later went on to do fairly well for himself

Yes, that's a young Tom Hanks. He went on to take drama at Skyline High School while my parents suggested something more practical like computer science. In the movie, "That Thing You Do", written by Tom, he plays homage to some of the people he went to school with. There was a character named Chrissy Thomkins (the female fan at the beginning of the film), the 2 stars of the surf movie were Rick and Anita…I'm not positive I'm the Rick in this case, but I did like surf music in high school. In this case, Anita is probably Anita Tilseth (I don't have my yearbook in front of me) and at the end Faye talks about kissing Dave Gamelgard. We had Kreig Gamelgard at Skyline…and I'm sure there were others. Also, Tom was part of our high school radio station, KSKY 850 AM, where I was the 1st ever program director. I think that's why the radio station interview with Clint Howard was in the film.

I took choir in college and I recorded one music video. Not much talent, but it was a heartfelt song about a girlfriend in college.

Sometime in the early 80's I was in a TV commercial for the Townsend, TN Chamber of Commerce. I was dude #2 on the inner tubes floating down the river. I've never seen the commercial and I'm not even sure if any copies of it exist.

I think that's it except for the

Beach Money

Beach Money is the title of the book written by my SendOutCards upline, Jordan Adler. The book is available in the SendOutCards gift shop or at www.beachmoney.com. I find the title very appealing, since I've loved the beach as far back as I can remember.

I grew up in Oakland, CA which is right on San Francisco Bay. We used to go to the beach in Alameda, which is an island on the bay. Alameda is about a 5 minute drive from where I grew up. The beach on the southwest end of Alameda is called South Shore. There's always been a shopping center there and when I was a kid there was also an amusement park. Our pediatricians were there, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Mitchell. Also, the Walgreens lunch counter. We didn't eat out an awful lot when I was a kid, but I remember eating there at least once.

But right after high school we moved a little farther north…first to Rohnert Park, then to Sebastopol. We lived on Adele Avenue in Rohnert Park, which is in the "A" section of town. One time I rode my bike from our house to Bodega Bay, where Hitchcock filmed "The Birds", to get back to the water. I also rode my bike to Dillon Beach to watch the hang gliders. Hang gliding was still pretty new in the early to mid 70's. In fact, I was a member of the Southern California Hang Gliding Association, which went on to become the United States Hang Gliding Association not much after that. There was a hang gliding school at Dillon Beach. We only stayed in Rohnert Park for a few months since we were just renting. Jobs were tough to come by because Sonoma State University was located there, (My son, Nick's, high school graduation ceremony was held there about 4 years ago.) so I ended up enlisting in the Air Force. I had a few months between the time I enlisted until I had to leave for basic training, so I got to live in the house in Sebastopol for a while. I went to basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX and I stayed there for 9 more months for my technical school…this whole time I was far, far away from a beach!

However, while I was at Lackland my parents became the resident managers of some beach homes right on Monterey Bay, called Monterey Dunes Colony! I left Lackland AFB in December of 1975 and I had a month's leave before I had to be at RAF Croughton in England. So, I got to spend an entire month right on the beach. Monterey Bay is not known for warm temperatures, but that December was warm enough to go swimming in the pool. I only spent about  year at Croughton (pronounced kraut en, not crouton) and then I went to live with my parents, sister and brother on the beach full time. In case you haven't guessed, I loved it there! I worked for my parents part-time and went to school full time (gotta love the GI Bill!).

However, by 1980 my parents wanted to move on, so they bought a campground in Townsend, TN. At first I planned on going with them, but the thought of leaving California again was very unpleasant, so I got a job with the US Census Bureau and stayed behind with my brother and sister. But after a few months the census was over and I needed to find another job or move to TN. Luckily, the father of one of the guys I worked with worked for AT&T. Brian wasn't interested in working for AT&T but he knew that I had a background in electronics, so on August 10, 1980 I became an AT&T employee. And Brian was also one of the main reasons I started in Redwood City. There was an office in Salinas, where I was now living with my sister. It was only a few minutes from Monterey Bay, but I didn't want to stay there…I wanted to get back to the SF Bay Area. Anyway, back to Brian. Brian wanted to go to work for Marine World/Africa USA, an amusement park that featured lions and tigers and bears (admit it, you said oh my!), and aquatic animals such as dolphins. Marine World was located in Redwood City which is right on SF Bay. Redwood City is on the SF Peninsula and Oakland is in the East Bay, so this was a totally different perspective! After about 3 1/2 years I transferred from the Redwood City office to downtown SF, but I continued living with my friend Tom in Redwood City.

While I was working in SF, I took a job with AT&T in New Jersey where I worked as a course developer and instructor. I spent a total of 9 months in New Jersey. During that time I wrote my course and taught it. I taught the 2 day course 20 times in 16 cities in 12 weeks! And during that time the network that my course taught about was constantly changing, so whenever I got back to NJ, I spent the entire weekend in the office rewriting the course and then printing 20-30 copies to take with me to the 2 classes I was teaching the following week. After 9 months of many long hours at work, I decided it was time to go back to CA…even though NJ is right on the Atlantic it wasn't CA. Although I did go to the Jersey Shore once and to Atlantic City a few times, I was ready to go back. I met my future wife in NJ and when I wanted to move to CA, she wanted to come with me.

We settled in Vacaville…fairly far from the beach. The wife and kids don't like to travel, so we didn't go many places, however we did spend a week in Cancun…right on the beach at the Riu Cancun Hotel. The hotel, an all inclusive resort, had just opened the month before, and since they were still working the kinks out, it was fairly cheap.

In 1997, I started thinking it was time to start planning for retirement so I enlisted in the CA Air National Guard. In January of 1998 I left for 6 months of training at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. Biloxi is right on the Gulf of Mexico…and they have casinos (another interest of mine). However, the ANG wasn't quite what I expected, so I got out in early 2001, but re-enlisted in early 2002. In 2005, I spent 2 1/2 months deployed to Diego Garcia in the middle of the Indian Ocean…talk about tropical beaches!

In March of 2012, my wife and I separated; and in May of 2012 I went to Kauai, HI with my sister and her friend Susan. I got to spend my 56th birthday in Hawaii. That was a good year for me…I was born on 5/6/56 and I was 56 years old!

So, back to Beach Money. The book talks about how to earn a residual income in a business that you can run from anywhere, even the beach! I highly recommend it. And if you're still awake, here are the

J.O.B.

I had planned on blogging about something else today but my plans changed about an hour ago. My original plan was to blog about the 3rd Annual Hump Day Happy Hour Speed Networking event at Laptop Lounge. I went to a different speed networking event a year or so ago, it was ok. Got a bunch of business cards, did some followup but not much else. This time I was going to use Casey Eberhart's speed networking strategy. Maybe at the 4th Annual Hump Day Happy Hour Speed Networking event.

Anyway, the reason that I can't go is because somebody else at my AT&T J.O.B. didn't do their job correctly, so I couldn't do my job. So, instead I have to go into work early tonight in case the work gets completed and I can do my part.

As many of you may already know J.O.B. stands for

If you're like most American's you spend the first 65 years of your life at the just over broke level. Your parents were probably just over broke when you were growing up. Then you went out and get your own J.O.B. And when you finally retire it gets even worse. A job is also known as the 40-40-40 plan where you work 40 hours a week for 40 years to retire at 40% of the income that you couldn't live on before.

The problem with a job is that most employers pay just enough to keep the employees from quitting and the employees do just enough work to keep from getting fired.

Another meaning of J.O.B. which I first heard from Casey Eberhart is Jerked Outta Bed, which is what happens when your alarm clock goes off at some ungodly hour.

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/third-shift-workers-day/ Which is what I do. Actually it's more like second and a half shift since I generally start at 7:30 or 8:00 PM, although there were many years that I started at 11:00 PM or 12:00 AM. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/top-gun-day/

Tomorrow - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/golf-day/ As if golfers need another excuse to get out on the links. Fore! And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chicken-dance-day/

A 1 and a 2

Next Wednesday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pick-strawberries-day/ I do like strawberries. Plain, dipped in chocolate or in strawberry shortcake. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/weights-measures-day/ The Imperial (non-metric) system, used in the US has some interesting units…such as a league or furlong. Or an older unit of measure…the cubit. And did you know that the mile was originally equal to 1,000 steps of marching Roman soldiers? And what about weights? Why is an ounce both a unit of weight and a unit of fluid volume? And why is it abbreviated oz? According to Wikipedia:
The abbreviation "oz" derives from the Italian word onza (now spelled oncia).
And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/be-a-millionaire-day/ Don't forget to sign up for the Millionaire Money Game. The next game begins on July 6.

June 13 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/gin-day/ which is immediately followed by https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bourbon-day/ on the 14th. Which is not to be confused with https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-whisky-day/ on May 16 or https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/whisky-sour-day/ on August 25.

Bourbon is a type of whiskey that gets its name from Bourbon County, Kentucky, where it originated. Bourbon tends to be amber-colored, and a little sweeter and heavier in texture than other whiskeys.
And bourbon can only be made in the US per international agreement.

It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/sewing-machine-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-doll-day/ You can celebrate both by sewing some doll clothes

Just interesting days, part deux

I got off work late today and sleeping in late, so I'm not going to have time for a full blog today.

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-nurses-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/nutty-fudge-day/. You can celebrate both by giving some fudge to your favorite nurse! If you don't have a favorite nurse, just give the fudge to me. I'm not a nurse, but my landlord is. If you give it to me, I'm sure at least some of it will get to him. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/limerick-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/odometer-day/

There once was a car with an odometer...
Can you finish this?

Tomorrow - There are a lot of days today, including https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/donate-a-days-wages-to-charity-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/top-gun-day/ I'm sure Maverick and Goose would be happy to donate a day's wages to charity. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/leprechaun-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/receptionists-day/ These 2 days really don't have anything to do with each other but I needed to put 2 of them together, which also applies to the next 2 days: https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/third-shift-workers-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/frog-jumping-day/

Next Tuesday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/accounting-day/ Take your friendly neighborhood CPA to lunch. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/may-ray-day/ Go out and soak up some rays

June 12 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/superman-day/, https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/red-rose-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/peanut-butter-cookie-day/ I'm sure there's a way to connect the 3 of these together and maybe I'll figure it out by next month

Just interesting days

I'm working on a couple of posts, but I don't have anything ready today.

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/eat-what-you-want-day/ Let's see…a cheeseburger and fries with a chocolate milkshake for lunch…and pizza and soda for dinner. Cake and ice cream for dessert. Who's with me? It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/twilight-zone-day/ What were some of your favorite episodes?

Tomorrow - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/odometer-day/ I have 224608 miles on my odometer. Can anybody beat that? It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-nurses-day/ I heard a commercial on the radio the other day by Marin General Hospital thanking their nurses. That's where my landlord, Tenley, works as a nurse. Thank you Tenley and all the other nurses out there. And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/limerick-day/ Do you have a favorite limerick? If it's clean, feel free to post it here. If not, send it to me privately :-) And let's not forget https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/nutty-fudge-day/ I thought it said naughty fudge, but nutty fudge is still good

Next Monday - I'm sorry, but Monday's don't appear to be going away anytime soon. But to make it better you can celebrate https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/visit-your-relatives-day/ Depending on your relatives, this may or may not be a good thing. Just hope they don't decide to celebrate it by coming to visit you! Maybe https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/no-dirty-dishes-day/ will be more to your liking. Or perhaps a nice trip to the museum is more your speed

June 11 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/jerky-day/ Does anybody out there make their own jerky?

Happy Mother's Day

Even though my mom is no longer with us, I'd like to thank all of the other moms in my life, friends and family, who are doing the toughest job in the world.

Interesting days

Today - Mother's Day, of course! And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/mother-ocean-day/ I've always loved the ocean and I really loved living right on the beach on Monterey Bay. Maybe that's why I like the concept of my friend Jordan Adler's book "Beach Money". It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/windmill-day/ I'm not going to be able to go to SF today to see the windmills…that's really a full day trip. But I will be celebrating(?) https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/stay-up-all-night-night/

Tomorrow - Burgers. Fries. Hot dogs. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/eat-what-you-want-day/ The picture on the website looks delicious! It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/twilight-zone-day/ I probably won't be able to watch it until this weekend, but I've got the entire series in my Netflix queue.

Next Sunday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-baking-day/ Just in case you bake something, but have too much to eat on your own, feel free to call me. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-telecommunications-day/ I wonder if my boss at AT&T will give me the day off? And lastly, https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pack-rat-day/ If you have too much stuff but can't seem to get rid of it, it may be time to call a professional organizer.

June 10 - Take a pen to paper and celebrate https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ball-point-pen-day/. And even though it's not my cup of tea, it's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/iced-tea-day/  (pun intended but failed miserably)

S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night

OK, it's really Saturday afternoon. There are songs for Saturday night and Saturday morning (hint, hint), but none about Saturday afternoon.

I saw the Bay City Rollers live in England in 1976 at a BBC Radio 1 Roadshow. I think I hitchhiked across half of England to get there, not necessarily to see the Bay City Rollers, although they were extremely popular at the time, but just to go to the show. Apparently these shows ran for 8 weeks during the summer but I don't remember hearing of any others. I don't even remember what city this was in but it was a lot of fun.

I think this is probably the longest weekend blog post yet, since, on the weekend, I usually just post the

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/train-day/ If you've never taken the California Zephyr from Sacramento to Reno, you should check it out. It's a very scenic ride through the Sierras with an interesting narrative along the way. I used to do the narrations a couple of times a year back in the early 90's. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/lost-sock-memorial-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/moscato-day/. Raise a glass in memory of all the socks that you've lost over the years

Tomorrow - Don't forget Mom today! And speaking of Mom, it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/mother-ocean-day/. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/stay-up-all-night-night/ I'm definitely celebrating this (although not necessarily by choice) and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/windmill-day/ I think I'll head out to San Francisco to see the two windmills there

Next Saturday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/learn-to-swim-day/ Not only is swimming fun and good exercise, it's also a good life skill to have. And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-virtual-assistants-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/sea-monkey-day/ How many of you had sea monkeys as a child? I did. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-whisky-day/ Thanks Linda Arrowwood for the awesome Jack Daniel's Praline Pecans for my birthday, although I seriously doubt there will be any left by next week

June 9 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/donald-duck-day/ See Donald's debut performance in The Wise Little Hen here

No blog post today

I know that posting a blog post about not posting a blog post is a bit recursive, but it's been a long week and I'm exhausted.

I learned quite a bit at Bobbette Grasty's event yesterday…see yesterday's blog post about it.

If you want to dig deeper into recursive things check out Godel, Escher, Bach

I won't give you an example of Curt Godel's work, but here are examples of M.C. Escher's and J.S. Bach's works

And here's an example of M.C. Hammer's work
