The Art of Manliness Guide to Scotch Whisky

Unfortunately, this is a few days late for Scotch Whisky Day, which was last Friday. But now you have a whole year to prepare!

As you can guess, today's blog post is based on a article from The Art of Manliness.
No other spirit has been associated with manhood like Scotch whisky. Whether it’s the hooking punch in the mouth or just the raw and earthy process by which it is brought forth from barley and water, Scotch has held a prominent place in the lives of men from kings to authors to titans of industry. What separates Scotch from its alcoholic counterparts is not just its unique background (to be labeled Scotch, a whisky must be distilled and initially matured in Scotland), but the commonalities shared by the men who partake in its liquid mysteries.
The man who drinks Scotch is one who lives life to the hilt, savoring new challenges and discoveries on a daily basis. He doesn’t settle and he doesn’t drink something just because it’s there. Few men drink Scotch to get drunk. First off, it’s too expensive; the cheapest bottles of single malt cost around $40. But secondly, and much more importantly, each bottle of Scotch contains so much history, tradition, and attention to detail that the men who drink it are not just downing a beverage, but participating in a celebration of artisanship and the deep pleasures of life.
How is Scotch whisky made?
The production process of scotch whisky is surprisingly simple. It involves malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, and maturation.
1) Malting — the process of turning barley into malt, very similar to the early stages of making beer.
2) Mashing — the dried malt is then ground into a course flour with the consistency of oatmeal, called “grist.”
3) Fermentation — the wort is then drawn off and pumped into large wooden or steel vessels called “washbacks.”
4) Distillation — the wash is distilled twice (single malt in a pot still, grain whisky in a Coffey still).
5) Maturation — the unfinished Scotch is then placed in oak barrels, or casks, for the maturation process to begin.
There's quite a bit more to each step, so be sure to read the article to find out more.

But what makes Scotch whisky Scotch whisky?
In order to be considered “Scotch” is must be aged in Scotland for at least three years. Though each whisky reaches its maturation at different ages, most are now aged anywhere from 8-20 years. Many feel that the longer a scotch is aged the smoother and more flavorful it becomes — old whiskies are also more rare and cost a quite a bit more. For example, a quick internet search brings up a bottle of 25-Year Highland Park Single Malt Scotch for $239.
Is it possible to find Scotch at a more reasonable price?
For many of us young men, buying our first bottle of Scotch can be a tough decision. The price is a bit higher than other spirits so we worry about choosing poorly. I have no doubt that there are as many opinions regarding a good “starter Scotch” as there are bottles of whisky (please leave your suggestions below), but for those wanting a recommendation, I would point them to my first, a bottle of Glenmorangie 10yr. And apparently the experts concur.
Even us "older" men, who have only dabbled in Scotch and have never actually bought a bottle would probably do well by following this advice.

And what is the difference between whisky and whiskey?

Whisky or Whiskey

A Scotsman who spells
Whisky with a n ‘e’,
should be hand cuffed
and thrown head first in the Dee,

In the USA and Ireland,
it’s spelt with an ‘e’
but in Scotland
it’s real ‘Whisky’.

So if you see Whisky
and it has an ‘e’,
only take it,
if you get it for free!

For the name is not the same
and it never will be,
a dram is only a real dram,
from a bottle of ‘Scotch Whisky’.

For more tips on how to drink Scotch, as well as its history and more on how it's made, be sure to check out the article on AoM.

6 Reasons You Wake Up Tired After A Full Night Of Sleep

I think most of us can probably relate to this. And this post by Dr. Michael Breus can help.

Here are the 6 reasons and his blog post will give you some solutions:
  1. You are going to bed at the wrong time, for YOU.
  2. You stay in bed too long.
  3. Your bedroom environment is disturbing your sleep.
  4. Your Bedpartner is keeping you from getting good sleep.
  5. You ate or drank something that is reducing your sleep quality.
  6. You could have a sleep disorder.
I know number 1 applies to me and probably most of the others, although number 4 doesn't apply!

Take a few minutes to check out the blog post and maybe you'll be able to wake up more refreshed,

Improve Your Breathing, Improve Your Health #TBT

This post was originally published last year. I've actually been thinking about this post lately...I think it's time to take a look at it again.

This blog post is based on a podcast from The Art of Manliness.

My breathing is really bad and has been for as long as I can remember. I tend to breathe very shallowly and I often stop breathing for a few seconds at a time. In fact, almost everyone over the age of about 5 breathes incorrectly, and that usually starts with "Stand up straight, stomach in, chest out", although maybe not as badly as I do.

I tend to not sleep very well, my digestion is bad (but that could be from my diet) and I often have neck and shoulder pains...these can all be caused or worsened by breathing incorrectly.

According to the podcast:
Breathing is the link between body and mind.
This is the key to yoga and ayurvedic breathing. I've toyed with these a little bit. But I did download the Kindle book: Breathe by Belisa Vranich who was the guest on the podcast.

The book contains a 14 day program to improve your breathing. I'm going to try it out and let you know how it goes.

The podcast was actually pretty interesting. It lasts about 45 minutes, but go ahead and check it out.

The Mad Men Guide to a Manly Haircut

Today's post is from an article on The Art of Manliness:

Retro seems to be getting more and more popular, with vinyl recordsclothing styles and even greeting cards getting more popular with the younger crowd.

And according to this article, retro hairstyles are now the trend.
AMC’s Mad Men is one of television’s most popular shows right now. Yeah, the story is good, but the attention to retro detail and the classic style of Don Draper and crew is at least an equal attraction. Well-tailored grey suits, pocket squares, and skinny ties makes the men on the show look cool, sophisticated, and manly.
But that classic and masculine look would be ruined if Don Draper sported a dopey looking haircut. Do you think advertising clients and women would take Don Draper seriously if he combed his hair forward and spiked it up front like many young men do these days? I don’t think so.
Don Draper and the other men at Sterling Cooper have haircuts that demand that you take them seriously. Your grandpa probably did his hair the same way: tight on the sides with a sharp part on the left side of the head. And of course, the hair needs that healthy looking shine.
Unfortunately, many men today walk around with the same boyish haircuts they’ve had since high school. Sure, your hair spiked in the front or tussled carelessly looked cool when you were 17, but it looks goofy when you’re 30. You want a haircut that looks manly, not juvenile.
One of the keys to a retro hairstyle is:
The hair product. If you really want to recapture that slicked back, clean look of the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s, get your hands on some Brylcreem. The stuff is a little greasy, but boy it really makes a man’s hair look nice. It smells pretty damn manly, too. I’ve used Brylcreem to style my hair for awhile now. My wife loves the way it makes my hair look, and I get compliments on it all the time.
If gramp’s hair products are too greasy for your taste, but you still want that shiny, put together look, try the modern products used by the Mad Men hairstylist. Gloria Ponce uses American Crew hair products on the Mad Men set. Her go to product for all the male actors is American Crew Pomade. The pomade gives you the same hold and shine as Brylcreem, but it isn’t as greasy. She’ll also use American Crew Firm Hold Styling Gel when the hair really needs to stay in place. Unlike other gels, this gel doesn’t flake and leave you looking like you have a bad case of dandruff. Plus it gives you that nice Mad Men shine without making your hair as hard as a helmet.
I use American Crew Pomade now, but maybe I should go back to Brylcreem, since a little dab'll do ya!

I do what you do

I re-wrote my elevator pitch a few days ago based on something I read in Kody Bateman's new book, "The Power of Human Connection", due out on August 28th. I got a copy of the e-book when I pre-ordered the book.

Kody said that all business people do the same thing...we take care of people. That really resonated with me, so I changed my pitch:
When you meet someone new at a networking event, what's the first thing they ask you? That's right...they ask you what you do. Not how you're doing or even who you are...as if that's the most important question.
It's not, since everyone in business does the same thing...we take care of people. We just use different tools and techniques.
A better question would be, what do you do to take care of people?
What I do to take care of people is to show them how to leverage relationship marketing to grow their businesses, and if they're interested, to show them how to have their relationship marketing costs paid for.
Rick Tompkins, Relationship Marketing Specialist
That's it so far. I'm sure there will be some changes to it.

And it'd be slightly different if someone actually asked me what I do. In that case, it would look more like this:
I do what you do. What we all do. Take care of people. We just use different tools and techniques.
What I do to take care of people is to show them how to leverage relationship marketing to grow their businesses, and if they're interested, to show them how to have their relationship marketing costs paid for.
Rick Tompkins, Relationship Marketing Specialist
It's still a work in progress, but that's where it stands right now. I had the first chance to use the first version today and I think it went over ok.

People do business with people they...

If you're in business, then you probably know the rest of the saying. If not, it goes "People do business with people they know, like and trust".

However, that's only part of it...people do business with people they know, like and trust...IF they remember you!

Unless you do business with a close friend, you'll probably eventually forget the name of the person that you did business with no matter how good you thought their product or service was.

In order to not become good ol' wutzizname or wutzername, you need to keep your name in front of your current and former customers. And the best way to do that is through consistent follow up. It's been said that for every month you don't interact with a customer or client, you lose ten percent of your influence with them. After just a few months, you'll become a distant memory. Which is not good if you'd like to do business with them again...or hope that they'll refer business to you.

An easy and inexpensive way to follow up in a memorable way is to make a list of your top 100 customers, former customers and/or prospects and to send them a greeting card every month. It'll probably take a little time to come up with your list but after that it'll only take a few minutes to send out a card to everyone on your list every month.

I'll be glad to help you set up your list and to get your cards sent out every month. Just let me know, either by commenting on this post or by email.

So remember, people do business with people they know, like and trust...IF they remember you!

This is kind of an interesting Throwback Thursday. I've been avoiding going back three years because the date is on a Sunday, but the posts from the last two years were basically too out of date to reuse:

Interesting days

What was I thinking?

Obviously nothing since it's another day when I don't really have anything in particular to talk about.

I have a few things percolating in the back of my brain but nothing that's developed enough for a full blog post.

One of the main things is something that I wrote about last week...secret Facebook groups, although I think I like the description of exclusive Facebook groups better. I've created my exclusive group already and I've invited a few people so far, but only realtors on the first go round. The content at the moment is aimed mostly at realtors...although I'm going to expand the type of content and the type of people that I'm going to invite. My goal is to provide relationship marketing tips and techniques to all kinds of business owners and salespeople. If you fit into one of these categories, or if you know someone who does, please let me know and I'll add you (or them) to my exclusive group.

Another thing that's been on my mind is that there have been changes to the SendOutCards compensation plan, making it easier to get promoted. The main thing is a change to the volume requirements. To get promoted to Manager, you need to get 4 customers (PAID4) and sign up one other person to do the same thing. Here's a webinar that talks about this change as well as some other things.

I'll probably develop one or both of these ideas into full blog posts probably next week.

Moving? 4 things people forget to do

Today's blog post is courtesy of Jennifer Seidelman.
Moving can be hectic. With dozens of to-dos, a tight timeline and a growing pile of boxes, it's easy to get frazzled and let things fall through the cracks. But it doesn't have to be that way.
Here are four things that people often forget about when they're getting ready to move:
Forward Your Mail: The post office makes it very easy to ensure your mail gets routed to the right place, at least for the first year after your move. Just head to a local branch or go online to update your address with the date you'll be moving, and your mail will automatically forward.
Measure and Decide: Take a measuring tape to your new home and jot down the measurements of each wall and nook. What furniture and decor will fit in your new space? What won't? It's better to make decisions about what to donate or sell before moving day.
Refill Prescriptions: It may take a bit to get your prescriptions forwarded to a new pharmacy and even longer for you to find the time to pick them up. If possible, get your prescriptions refilled ahead of time from your current pharmacy.
Back Up Your Electronics: Back up your computer and phone to the cloud, and make sure you've uploaded all your photos and documents somewhere safe. In the event something happens to your devices during the move, a backup will get you up and running faster.
You can store up to 500 photos in a free SendOutCards account, plus they'll always be available to use on greeting cards! If you need more space, you can store 1,000 photos when you have an Enhanced subscription of $17 per month. If you need still more storage, there are other accounts available that allow you to store unlimited photos...as well as unlimited contacts and more!

If you're looking to buy or sell a home in the Portland or San Francisco Bay areas, reach out to Jennifer!

I hate selling! #TBT

Today's blog post was originally posted two years ago:

How many of you have heard this while sharing your network marketing opportunity? I know I have! But fortunately for us we're in network marketing and not network selling! I'm going to share an example of why network marketing is all about the distribution and not the selling from Jordan Adler's book "Beach Money".

"Chapter 19 - Strategies for Creating Beach Money"

"Beach Money Strategy Number One - Focus on distribution versus sales"

In this section Jordan talks about why sales isn't the key to living a Beach Money lifestyle. The following is paraphrased from Jordan's book.

Sales perspective

You are offered the chance to buy as many 2 liter bottles of soda as you'd like for $1 each that retail for $2. The focus here is on sales...you need somebody to buy all of your bottles of soda from you. A good salesperson would love an offer like this, but the problem with it is that once you stop selling you won't make any more money.

Distribution perspective

You can purchase a vending machine for $1,000 that dispenses cans of soda for $1.00 and you earn a 10 cent commission on each can. But is that really a good value? You're out $1,000 up front and you'll have to sell 10 cans to earn the same $1 profit as selling one 2 liter bottle.

But suppose the rest of the offer was that the company you buy the machine from will always keep it stocked for you at no cost to you, the company will provide lifetime maintenance on the machine in case something ever goes wrong or the machine needs to be upgraded, they will also collect all the money from the machine, count it, tabulate an accounting report and send you a check every month. Is it starting to sound better now? Now suppose that other people around the world buy a machine for $1,000 and you now get a portion of the 10 cent commission on every can ever sold by every machine in your distribution network...now you just need a few sales from lots of machines. What would you think of this offer now?  Now, this is what leads to a Beach Money lifestyle. You can continue to earn money without having to do any work at all. True, you have to market your machine so that you can get a few people to buy from your machine and to interest other people into investing in their own machines. But once that's been done, you won't have to work anymore.

That's how network marketing works...but instead of buying a vending machine, you buy a distributorship, usually for $1,000 or less (SendOutCards distributorships are $50). You then get a few people to buy your goods or services and you earn a percentage on their purchases (SOC is 20%) and if someone buys a distributorship through you, or someone below you, you earn a commission on their sales (2 - 27% with SOC). Once your distribution network is built, you can retire to the beach!
