It's the most wonderful time of the year #TBT

Today's post comes from this date two years ago:

Goal setting time

As we approach the new year, people are starting to think about their New Year's resolutions but, unfortunately, most people can't seem to make it beyond Ditch New Year's Resolutions Day, the day when most people have given up on their resolutions.

What can we do to keep this from happening? A lot of this post is from Stephen Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and "First Things First", a book that expands on Habit 3.

I've covered some of these things previously but I'll go over them again here with links to previous posts.

First, know your roles in life. You may have more, but ideally you'll want to have 5-7 roles in your life. What do I mean by roles? These are the various parts of your life. You could have roles as a parent, spouse, child to your parents, sibling, friend, employee, business owner, church or civic organization member, volunteer, etc. If you have more than 7, pick out the 7 that are most important to you. I'm not saying you can't have more, but we're going to concentrate on your 7 most important roles to you.

Begin with the end in mind, Habit 2, means to know what outcome you desire. Suppose you want to be remembered as a loving spouse and parent, a successful small business owner, or a productive employee when you die. These things will be part of your long term vision statement. A vision statement is a statement of who you want to be in the future. The post linked above contains some tools to help you create a vision statement. A mission statement is a statement of who you are now. Some people use the terms vision statement and mission statement somewhat interchangeably, but I like the above definitions.

Now that you know who you are and who you want to be, how do you get from here to there? You set goals. You want to include goals for all of your current roles and any future roles. We could talk about the differences between goals and objectives here, but you can check out this summary post about vision, mission and goats...yes, I said GOATS, check out the post linked above.

I've written about these subjects several times before, so feel free to look back at previous posts.

And here's an article about why it's important to write out your goals by hand.

Tomorrow - Tick Tock Day and Pepper Pot Day

Next Thursday - Pop Music Chart DayWorld Braille DaySpaghetti DayHypnotism Day and Trivia Day And for some pop music chart trivia, check out this webpage, it will tell you the number one song for any date since 1940 and will tell you the songs that were number one on that day every year after that, all the way up until this year. You can then play a medley of all those songs or save an image of a 45 of the song on that date and you can even have it printed on a mug or stein...makes a great gift idea!

Tomorrow is #CardPlayingDay

Now that Christmas is over, it's time to sit down and unwind with a deck of playing cards. There are literally thousands of card games played throughout the world. What's your favorite? Did it make the list of the world's most popular card games?

According to Board Game Geek, the 10 most popular games played with a standard 52 card deck are:
  1. Bridge
  2. Poker
  3. Cribbage
  4. Spades
  5. Hearts
  6. Canasta
  7. Big Two
  8. Oh Hell!
  9. Gin Rummy
  10. Whist
And according to The Art of Manliness, these are the 6 card games that every man should know how to play:
  1. Gin rummy
  2. Hearts
  3. Poker (Texas Hold 'em)
  4. Solitaire
  5. Cribbage
  6. Blackjack
The AoM article has links to the rules for each of the games.

So, grab a deck of cards, whether you're alone, or you're with one or more other people, and play some cards.

#ThankYouNoteDay

Remember when your mom made you send a thank you note to everyone who gave you a birthday present or Christmas present? Or how about the thank you notes for the gifts you received at your wedding reception?

Thank you cards are still very important, whether thanking someone for a gift, thanking them for some help, thanking them for inviting you to a party, or even just thinking them for being a friend...showing appreciation to others not only makes the recipient feel better but it also makes you feel better.

And what about in business? 80% of business card sending needs fall into one of three categories...nice to meet you, looking forward to doing business with you, and of course, thank you!

And SendOutCards makes it easy with the First Impressions Kit.

One of the most valuable, and least utilized, uses of thank you notes is after a job interview. I know...you've heard it a thousand time! But guess what? Nobody does it!

According to Fortune:
We were surprised to learn that over 75% of the people surveyed did not receive any kind of thank you note from most of the candidates they interviewed, and for 30% of those surveyed, no follow up meant no further steps for the candidate. One hiring manager remarked, “The follow up is the lynchpin for me. If the interview goes well and I feel invigorated and excited about someone, I wait to see what kind of follow up efforts they put forth."
When asked about a preference for email or snail mail:
Our sources didn’t show a strong preference for email or snail mail, and both have their benefits. An email can be more timely but a handwritten note might really stand out. Quoted in a New York Times article on the subject, New York fashion publicist Cristiano Magni says, “It is so important, in a digital world, to have the dignity to sit down and write something in your own hand.” And when prompted further, many of our sources agreed that a hand-written note stands out as more personal, and there’s no denying it requires a bit more effort than its digital equivalent. Most important is just to do something within 24 hours of the interview.
Why not send both? Send an email out because it's timely, but a card received in the mail a few days later will have a stronger impact. Wouldn't you want your resume on the top of the stack when they make a hiring decision?

So, head to the store and buy a package of thank you cards for the Christmas presents you received, for all the people in your life that you're thankful for, for all your customers and prospective customers, and for those people who interviewed you for that dream job you're dying to get. Or just go to SendOutCards and pick one of our cards to send. With SendOutCards, sending a card through the mail is as easy as sending an email. You can do both in just a matter of minutes.

The week in review

Monday - "Oh no! I haven't sent my Christmas cards yet! Now what?" It's still not too late. Strong ties #TBT

This post is going back 2 years ago, when I was working at UPS:

One of my UPS customers is Simpson Strong Tie, which reminded me of strong ties vs weak ties, which reminded me of this blog post I did earlier this year:

Network Marketing

Only two words, but most people (including me), have it all backwards. I've heard this before but it's finally starting to sink in. Network marketing is not about marketing your stuff to the people in your network, it's about getting the people in your network to market your stuff to their network.

I think I've heard that the average person has 200 contacts in their phone. Or is it 200 Facebook friends? Doesn't really matter, so let's say that your network consists of 200 people. If you try to sell your stuff to them, if you're lucky maybe 10% (20 people) may buy from you. But if your 200 friends market to their 200 friends, we're now talking about 40,000 people hearing about your product or service. If 10% of those people are interested, you've now got 4,000 customers.

But how do you get your friends to market for you? One way is to post stuff on FB that's worthy of being liked, shared or commented on. Another way is to train them on what to tell their friends. Here's an excellent podcast from Dr. Ivan Misner, the founder of BNI (Business Network International) on the subject.

And LinkedIn is really built on the idea of reaching your 2nd degree connections, that is the people who are connected to your connections. Here's an article on how to reach out to them. According to LinkedIn, I have 319 1st degree connections, but 201,712 2nd degree connections. That's an average of  just over 632 connections per person.

And there is also the theory that weak ties can be more influential than strong ties, because your strong ties tend to be more like you, therefore they already tend to know the same people you do and they know about the same things, such as job openings, as you do. However, the people that they know that are outside of your group, your weak ties, will likely have other interests or needs than your close group of friends.

LinkedIn will also list your 3rd degree connections (I know a guy who knows a guy). These are very weak ties but you may still have some influence over them according to this article.

So, quit trying to sell to your friends! Instead, let them sell for you to their friends.

Some will...Some won't...So what? Next!

If you've been in network marketing for awhile, you've probably heard this:

And it's absolutely true. About 2% will and 98% won't. The question should be "So what can I do about it?" Maybe you can guess what I'm going to say...follow-up! We already know that only about 2% of people make a buying decision on the first exposure. The point is that you make your presentation and then move on, but don't forget to circle back.

This also ties in with this golden oldie:
Although, they left the most important words out: You can't say the right thing to the wrong person AT ANY TIME. You can't say the wrong thing to the right person AT THE RIGHT TIME.

You'll never know when the right time might be, so you just keep following up, until they buy or die! (Or tell you to leave them alone!)

Since it usually takes about 90% of people four or more exposures before they make a buying decision, you want to make sure you're the one making that exposure. I'm sure you've heard "I've heard of..." whatever your company is. That's great! Someone has gotten at least the first exposure out of the way for you!

Just remember that:
Most will, at the right time; a few won't, at any time; so what? If not this time, maybe next time!
Don't forget, we offer one of the best follow-up tools available!

Budgeting doesn’t have to suck

You need a budget!

Yes you! Don’t tell me that you don’t. We all need one, whether we like it or not. Fortunately, there’s You Need a Budget that will make it much less painful than other methods you may have tried.

This post is based on a podcast from The Art of Manliness which features an interview with the developer of You Need a Budget.

You Need a Budget is based on 4 simple rules:
  1. Give every dollar a job
  2. Embrace your true expenses
  3. Be flexible
  4. Age your money

Give every dollar a job:

Look at the current balance of your checking account and assign each dollar to an expense…rent or mortgage, utilities, etc. Don’t forecast and say “Well. I’ll get paid again in 2 weeks, so I can actually spend a little extra”. NO! Don’t do it! Bad! Bad! Work only with what you have at the moment…not a penny more.

Embrace your true expenses:

Not all of our bills are paid monthly. We may pay our auto insurance every six months, we pay our vehicle registration once a year, we need new tires every several years, holidays and birthdays come up all throughout the year…don’t forget to allow for these expenses on a monthly basis.

Be flexible:

Your budget is a living thing. You’ll need to make adjustments all the time. Don’t feel like you’re locked into something you said a year ago, a month ago or even last week.

Age your money:

The money that you earn on this paycheck shouldn’t be spent for at least 30 days…so you’ll need to get to the point that you have a month’s worth of cash in your checking account.

Even though you don’t need to use the app, it’ll make it that much simpler if you use the app.

For even more information on the YNAB system, you can get the new book.

Oh no! I haven't sent my Christmas cards yet! Now what?

Don't panic! It's not too late. According to the Post Office:

Holiday Mailing Deadlines

Mailing Within Contiguous US
Make sure your mail and packages arrive in time for the holidays by mailing before these recommended deadlines, excluding Alaska and Hawaii.
Send-by dates for expected delivery before Dec. 25th (Actual delivery date may vary and is based on origin, destination, Post Office acceptance time, and other conditions).
December 14 — USPS Retail Ground®
December 19 — First-Class Mail®
December 20 — Priority Mail®
December 22 — Priority Mail Express®
For Priority Mail Express® shipments mailed December 23 through December 25, the money-back guarantee applies only if the shipment was not delivered, or delivery was not attempted, within two (2) business days.
If you're mailing within the Contiguous US, you have until tomorrow to get your crds in the mail. So, you can rush out to Hallmark, Target or Walmart and pick up a box or two of cards, get them home, fill them out, address and stamp (hopefully you have enough stamps!) and get them in the mail before the last pickup tomorrow.

Or you can go to my SendOutCards website and get your cards out in less than an hour without leaving your home. And you can send exactly the number of cards that you need...you don't have to buy 2 boxes of 20 cards to be able to send 21 cards! We can send from one card to a million cards. We sent over 900,000 cards in one day last year, let's see if we can break a million cards in one day!

And even if you don't make it by Christmas, your card will still have the same, if not more, impact even if it arrives a few days late. Remember:
The only card that's too late is the one that's never sent.
Here's a video that will show you exactly how to send a card using SendOutCards.

The 12 days of Christmas #TBT

We're going all the way back to last year:

I originally thought that this was the 12 days leading up to and including Christmas, but I recently found out that they begin on Christmas and go up to Three Kings Day.

We're all familiar with the song "The 12 Days of Christmas" with all the Lords a leaping, etc. The current cost of getting all of these items according to the PNC Christmas Price Index is $34,363.49, up +0.7% from last year. It breaks down the price of each item. Be sure to check it out!

Here's a fun twist by Allan Sherman ("Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah") called "The 12 Gifts of Christmas". I loved this song as a kid. Some of the references won't make sense to you if you're under about 50 years old, but here it is:

I did my own version of the 12 days of Christmas 16 years ago (Danny was 11 and Nick was 7). I did it starting 11 days before Christmas and ending up on Christmas Day. Here is the final verse:

On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

12 fragrant roses
A gift from our 11 year old
A $10 gift certificate
9 mini Cinnabons
8 Christmas cookies
A gift from our 7 year old
6 weeks of dance lessons
5  O-N-I-O-N  R-I-N-G-S
4 calling cards (plus a cell phone)
3 French toasts
2 chocolate Dove bars
And a Partridge Family CD

Starting on Christmas Day I'm going to do a series of blog posts called "The 12 Days of Follow-up". Stay tuned for those posts, if you're in sales I'm sure they'll come in handy!

This year the CPI (Christmas Price Index) is $34,558.65 (+0.6%).

How many customers do you have? How many of them do you want to keep?

If you're like most business owners, your answers are probably a) Not enough and b) All of them. What about former customers? How many do you have and how many would you like back? Probably a) Too many and b) All of them. And finally...how about prospective customers? How many do you have and how many of them would you like to become a customer? I'm guessing not enough and all of them!

This post is all about the 60:30:10 Marketing Plan and is my take on how you should be spending your marketing dollars. It's based on a few different things I've read.

You should spend 60% of your marketing budget marketing on your existing clients, 30% on your former clients and only 10% on looking for new business. Why is that?

According to Small Biz Trends:
The probability of selling to an existing customer is 60-70 percent. The probability of selling to a new prospect is 5-20 percent.
That's because your existing customers already know, like, and trust you and your product and/or service. And the same with your former clients...unless something bad happened, you should be able to sell to them fairly easily if you can get them to come back.

Also from Small Biz Trends:
80 percent of your future profits will come from just 20 percent of your existing customers.
The Pareto Principle in action again. A lot of experts say you should fire your bad customers, but unless they're really abusing you or your business, it often takes time for customers to develop:
The average repeat customer spends 67 percent more in months 31-36 of their relationship with a business than they do in months 0-6.
An article in YFS Magazine (Young, Fabulous & Self-Employed) states:
Leading experts recommend that businesses spend 75% of their marketing budget to retaining existing customers (and re-engage them). Yet surprisingly, most companies do the exact opposite. Even larger corporations like Max Factor cosmetics and Target (not just the little SMBs) make the mistake of spending too much money chasing new customers (or ones that have left) and often ignore their existing ones.
They didn't say much about marketing to former customers, so I modified their percentages to come up with the 60:30:10 Marketing Plan.

Also from YFS Magazine:
Every dollar spent on direct marketing to retain existing customers is actually worth fifty times the equivalent amount spent chasing new customers. With above the line advertising (traditional mass media advertising: newspapers, television, radio, outdoor, Internet), it is very hard to capture the attention of new customers, embed your message in their mind and compel them to act.
It is much easier (and cheaper) to reinforce your message with an existing customer and encourage repeat visits.
And some additional tips:
  1. Spend 75% of your Marketing Budget on Existing Customers
  2. Prepare to Maximize Return on Investment (ROI)
  3. Realize that Frequency Lifts Sales by 75% More Than Upselling
  4. Brick and Mortar? Focus on Customers Within a 6-mile radius
One of the best ways to market to existing, former, or potential clients is with direct mail and the best way to use direct mail is with SendOutCards.

"How much will this cost me?", you may be asking. If you use only SendOutCards in your marketing, which many people do, you can expect to spend $40 per year per existing customer that you'd like to retain plus $400 the first year. Remember...60% goes to existing customers, 30% to former customers and 10% to potential customers. As an example, let's say you have 100 customers...your costs will be $40 per customer, $4,000 for all 100. That will cover 9 cards to each of your 100 customers, 9 cards each for up to 50 former customers and 9 cards each for up to 17 prospects. Seven of the nine cards are automatic...you just add the person's name and birthday and they'll automatically receive a birthday card, a holiday card, a Thanksgiving card, plus a card for each of the 4 seasons. You can add one or two of your own marketing cards to go out when you want. The $400 will get you setup in the system and will include your own handwriting font, four signatures, the ability to put custom branding on the backs of your cards, and more.

"What about after the first year?". It's even better...$100 plus $40/customer. That's for the entire year!

You can also include gifts with your cards. Check out this video of some of the cool gifts we have available and who you should send them to.

3 tips to make yourself healthier, happier and sexier!

OK, I lied! But since you're here, I do have 3 tips on how to use this blog in your business and personal life!

Even though I enjoy writing this blog (well at least most of the time) this blog is meant as a tool for you.
  1. Read this blog as often as possible. It does contain some interesting posts from time to time. If you can't read it every day, then I'd suggest reading "The Friday Fishwrap" to get the rundown on everything that had been posted the preceding week. And if that's even too much, you can read "A Musing Digest" on the 1st Sunday of the month to get the wrap-up of the preceding month.
  2. Don't forget about "Your weekend guide to interesting days" published every Saturday to find out the days to celebrate in the coming week. Even though this seems trivial, it may be the most important part of the blog because it allows you to send out cards to your friends, family or clients to celebrate unusual or quirky days, such as Pharmacist Day, Curling is Cool Day (I actually sent a card to a friend who is a curling fan) or Brownie Day. You can even use them for contests, like I did for Brownie Day.
  3. This blog is supposed to be interactive. Like, comment and share. Especially sharing...if you like a blog post, share it to your wall, so that your friends can enjoy it and I can reach more people. If you want me to post something, I take requests. If you'd like to post something, I accept guest bloggers.
So, there you have it...3 tips for using this blog in your life.
