Holy mackarel

This post is based on a training call by my SendOutCards upline, Mark Herdering. Although this was a SendOutCards training call, with examples based on SOC, the information can be used by anybody in network marketing.

The topic of the call was: The Difference Between Sponsoring and Selling. I talked about this somewhat a while back in another post. Mark used an interesting analogy to make his point...fishing (hence the title)!

You have the opportunity to earn $140 by catching rainbow trout. It costs $50 to get the fishing license and $395 to purchase your fishing gear. Your job is to find the rainbow trout by finding mountain streams or lakes fed by mountain streams since that is where the rainbow trout will be found.

However, a person who is just interested in selling goes to anyplace where they can find water, for example, the ocean beach. They throw out their net and catch plenty of fish...however, these fish are mackerel, not trout, and even though they did everything right...they caught fish, they didn't earn $140 for each one caught. Your fishing sponsor tells you that you made a good effort but you caught the wrong kind of fish. So you go someplace else and you try fishing at the mouth of a river. You throw your line in and you catch a big...sea bass!

Think of the fish as people that you meet in your business. You'll want to share your product of service with anybody who has a need for it. The ideal "fish" will have a need for your product or service plus a network of other "fish" with a need for your product or service, but only the rainbow trout will have the desire to share with their network, which is more important than a need for what you sell or a big network. But if you get a "fish" with all three, then just get out of their way!

So, spend your time fishing for the right kind of people, those with a desire to build a business of their own, and you'll make a lot of money.
