Kirkin' o' the Tartans

I found out about this when I met Mike, one of my neighbors, as we were talking about his bagpipe playing. In an article from Bill Petro's blog:
What is The Kirking of the Tartans?
Etymologically it simply means:
  • Kirking, from the Scots word kirk which means church, in this usage it means “blessing.”
  • Tartans are the traditional plaid emblems of Scottish clans represented in unevenly spaced colored lines and rectangles on woven wool cloth.
According to Scottish Tartans Authority:
While the Kirkin' o' the Tartan service celebrates Scotland and Scottish heritage, it is a truly a Scottish-American custom.
This Sunday, May 7th at 10:00 am, The St. Andrew's Society of Modesto, will be hosting the Kirkin' o' the Tartans at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1528 Oakdale Rd. Modesto, 95355.

There are plenty of other Scottish celebrations:

January 6 was Shortbread Day, a decidedly Scottish food

March 10 was International Bagpipe Day

Tartan Day  on April 6

Here is my mom's family tartan (the Napier Clan):

May 27 will be Cellophane Tape Day (aka Scotch Tape)

July 27 will be Scotch Whisky Day

And Scottish games all over the place at different times of year. The Modesto games were cancelled because of storms. Another big one in this area is the Scottish Highland Gathering and Games, located at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds, Labor Day weekend.

Interesting days

Tomorrow - Baby Day and World Asthma Day

Next Monday -  Iris DayFree Trade Day and No Socks Day
