Equal temperament

Equal temperament doesn't mean you're happy half the time and sad half the time, but instead it refers to how pianos are tuned nowadays.

Barbershop Quartet Day is coming up on Saturday and inspired this blog post.

One of the key features of barbershop music is the ringing sound, or what's sometimes called the 5th voice. This chord is also known as the barbershop seventh and can't be played on the equal tempered piano keyboard.

Equal tempered is a way of tuning that in traditional Western music divides an octave into 12 equal parts. This makes it easier to tune the piano, but is a little more dissonant than just temperament. Just temperament uses ratios based on a base frequency. With just temperament it's possible to get the barbershop seventh. There's a lot of math involved in the theory of equal tempered versus just tempered, but what's important to know is that equal tempered does not provide the ringing quality that defines barbershop music.

Here's a sample of some old school barbershop harmony:

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/draw-a-picture-of-a-bird-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/zoo-lovers-day/ Maybe you can go to the zoo and draw some pictures of the birds you see there

Tomorrow - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/winston-churchill-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/name-yourself-day/ I suppose you could name yourself Winston Churchill…but why? And it's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cherish-an-antique-day/ Sometimes I feel like one

Next Wednesday - Take a wild guess as to what day it is today: It's the aptly named https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/that-sucks-day/, as well as https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bookmobile-day/

May 8 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/no-socks-day/ Are you going barefoot today? (Those are some pretty ugly feet in the picture. I once met a foot model in Columbus, Ohio…too bad she didn't pose for this picture). And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/iris-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/military-spouse-appreciation-day/
