The 12 days of follow up - Day 9 #TBT

Here's another post from my series on following up with customers and prospects from last year:

I hope you had a chance to look at yesterday's blog post promoting my friend's business. If not, here's the link to the post and here's the link to the Facebook post I tagged her in.

There are several other things I could've done with the post:
  • I could've interviewed Deanna (don't be surprised if an interview show's up in the future...I'm planning on doing a series of interviews of business owners soon)
  • I could've given a written or a video testimonial (again...don't be surprised)
  • Or I could've reviewed her business
As you can see there are several ways of accomplishing the same thing, so over the next few months you'll probably be seeing one or more of these ideas implemented. This way I'm helping Deanna with her business and I'll also be top of mind when she comes across others who could use SendOutCards.

As we wrap up week 3, I hope you've gotten some value from these posts. And be sure to leave a comment below or send me an email if there's anything in particular you'd like to see next week or if there's anything you'd like to comment on up to this point.

And if you haven't downloaded the SendOutCards app, go ahead and do so. It's free and if you're not already a SendOutCards customer or distributor the first three cards that you send are on me!

Here are the links to the posts in this series on the 12 days of follow up:

New Year's Resolutions

Well, it's that time of year again. Did you make some resolutions for the new year? If you're like most of us, you probably made some vague resolutions and they end up lasting about 2 weeks. In fact, there's a day for that...Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day is coming up on January 17th.

New Year's Resolution

A New Year Brings Change

A new year often brings new beginnings. I was intrigued to discover how one company used a novel way to motivate employees to think about new ways of doing things.

Here is the approach practiced by Chiyoji Misawa, who founded the largest home builder in Japan, Misawa Homes, more than 50 years ago. He "died" at least once every decade to arrest the momentum of out-of-date assumptions and policies. He sent a memo to his company that formally announced "the death of your president."

According to Robert H. Waterman, Jr. in his book, "The Renewal Factor," this was Misawa's way of forcing the whole company to rethink everything. When employees resist change because they are used to the old way of doing things, Misawa declared:  "That was the way things were done under Mr. Misawa. He is now dead. Now, how shall we proceed?"

I was particularly interested in this novel idea because so often the resistance to major changes starts at the top. As the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

But that thinking doesn't apply to improvements. Simply because things are sailing along, assuming that the winds won't change is dangerous business. When I went into the envelope manufacturing business decades ago, the notion of email and the internet were science fiction. Yet it became one of the biggest challenges that an envelope manufacturer could face.

Being a great leader is not always about becoming an expert at everything - it's really about knowing where to find knowledge and expertise when you need it. That's where Misawa's genius was most evident: knowing how to solicit input and gain perspective from his own connections.

In turn, he encouraged his work force to learn how others approach new markets, revamp processes and resolve problems. Giving his employees the opportunity to offer their suggestions served several purposes: acknowledging their value to the company, encouraging them to think ahead, and teaching them not to be afraid of change.

Change is inevitable, and those who embrace it are more likely to have staying power as each new year rings in.

New Year's resolutions tend to focus on areas that we know need a change. Make those resolutions too general or too sweeping, and chances are they will be your resolutions year after year. Alan C. Freitas, president of Priority Management, recommends that you write resolutions/goals that are SMART:

Specific - Precisely what you want to achieve, and by when.

Measurable - What a successful outcome looks like.

Attainable - Challenging, but achievable.

Relevant - Address areas of your work and life that are really important to you.

Trackable - How you're going to gauge your progress.

Getting into the right mindset to make changes, large or small, takes some motivation. Figure out why you want to achieve the goal. Make a list of all the ways you will benefit from achieving it. Whether it's a personal goal, like finishing a degree, or a professional change, such as breaking into a new market, you need to understand why it will be worth it to make a change.

Then analyze exactly where you are now in reaching that goal: the strengths that will help you, the weaknesses that could hurt you, and the opportunities you can use to attain what you want.

Next, you must determine what you'll need to invest to achieve your goal.  Whether it's time, money, or something else, know what reaching this goal could "cost" you. Is it worth it? If it's important enough to you, sacrifices will pay off in the end. Just make sure that you have an end in sight!

Do your research. You may need to master new abilities to fulfill your resolution. Will you need to take classes to learn a new skill? What kind of information do you need access to? Are you willing to carve out the time it will require? You don't want to start something that you are not committed to finishing.

Look for support from family, friends, co-workers, managers or organizations that can help you. The more people who you share your resolutions or goals with, the more likely you will be to follow through.

You will have more success if you set deadlines for achieving your goals and resolutions. List specific dates on which you want to complete the various steps of the plan.

Finally, resolve to make it a happy new year!

Mackay's Moral: You don't have to "die" like Misawa to bring your dreams to life.

Ten times your T and you'll double your B

I'll bet you're thinking I'm going off on one of my math tangents (see, a little math humor), but no...this was actually the theme in Kody Bateman's Relationship Marketing Weekly last week. But what does it mean? Be sure to check out the video above and check out the transcript, but here it is in a nutshell:
What in the heck is Kody talking about? Ten times your T, you’re going to double your B. What I’m saying is if you will 10 times the tangible impressions that you send out to your people in your business, you will better than double your business the next year. Ten times your T means do 10 times the tangible touches in the marketplace.
There are many ways to send a tangible touch such as a letter, card or gift and SendOutCards can help you with cards and gifts.

No matter how many cards, gifts and letters you sent out last year, if you send ten times that many this year you'll more than double your business.
If you 10 times the tangible impressions that you send out over the next year by sending thank-you cards, birthday cards, holiday cards, stay-in-touch cards, thinking-about-you cards, 80 to 90 percent of the time, only be thinking about the relationship. Five or ten percent of the time, you may ask for something. Ask them to come in, whatever.
Yes, it's really that powerful. And that simple.

The year in review - 2017

I've made several changes to the blog over the past year, including this annual review and the monthly reviews. I'm going to change the name of the monthly reviews...I don't like "A Musing Digest" I may just call it the month in review. I only started the monthly reviews halfway through the year so we don't have a full year's worth. I'll probably point out some highlights from each month.

August - "The Funday Sunnies" ended in August but were replaced by the monthly wrap-up.

September - The week of September 15th featured "The best way to reheat pizza" and it really works! Also, Jordan Adler's new book "Better than Beach Money" is featured the following week.

October - The week ending October 20th was all about averages. The following week included "A simple guide to net worth"

November - A lot about the new SendOutCards rank advancement changes and a lot about holiday cards.

December - The 60:30:10 Marketing plan was first introduced to the world during the week of December 15th. And quite a bit more on holiday cards.

A Musing Digest - December 2017
