515 Days Not Lost: How Leap Year Keeps Us On Track

I had planned on doing a blog post on Leap Day, but  since Days of the Year already had one, I decided to use it.

515 Days Not Lost: How Leap Year Keeps Us On Track

Once every four years there is the strangest occurrence, suddenly February has an additional day, and children all over the world are resigned to only having one birthday every four years as the 29th rolls around again. While we have all grown accustomed to living with the leap year as part of our normal calendars, most of us write it off to an oddity that comes to pass once every four years. But how many are aware of exactly why it happens? Today, we’re going to share with you exactly why that is.

The Changing Of The Calendar
While it’s strange to conceive of in modern days, the world didn’t always have one consistent calendar used all the year round. There are still remnants of that when you notice that not everyone observes the New Year on the same date.

Back in the beginning, people told the passing of the year by the position of the sun, how many moon cycles had gone by (Ever wondered where we got the word Month?) and the changing of the seasons. Ironically before we kept such specific track of things, the concept of a ‘Leap Year’ wasn’t necessary.

Civilization, however, was advancing, and ways to tell the passing of time accurately was needed. While many had been used, the first widely accepted and established one was the Julian Calendar, first put into place by its namesake Julius Caesar in 46BC. This calendar was established to correct the reckoning of the years, as the year used previously to this was only 355 days in length. As a result, the year 46BC had 445 days in it, to bring things back into alignment.

The Leap year
As many people know, the Greeks were absolutely superb astronomers, and had noticed that the year was not, in fact, 365 days, but 365.25. So every fourth year of 365 days was off by one full day, and thus a day was inserted in February to correct this every fourth year.

So We Use The Julian Calendar?
No, due to reasons far too long to go into here, the Julian Calendar was also inaccurate (mind you, only by .002%, but that adds up over the years), and in 1582 we changed over to the Gregorian Calendar, which we still use today. However, the establishing leap day remained in place, and we continue celebrating it to this very important day. How important you ask? Over the space of time in between, our calendar would be off by 515 days. In short, we’d have lapped the year and be halfway through doing it twice!

This is slightly inaccurate, the year is only 365.2422 days, so the rules for figuring out Leap Year are slightly more complicated. If a year is evenly divided by 4 (if the last 2 digits are evenly divisible by 4, the whole number is), then it's a leap year...2016 is divisible by 4, so this is a leap year. The next part of the rule is...if the year is also divisible by 100, it's not a leap year: 1700, 1800 and 1900 weren't leap years. The last part is...if the year is also divisible by 400, then it is a leap year: 1200, 1600, 2000 were all leap years. This means there are only 97 leap years in each 400 year cycle instead of 100...97/400 = .2425, so it's still off slightly...it will be off by a day in approximately 3,300 years!

Introduce a girl to engineering

Today is Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day so I thought it would be a good time to talk about it.

First things first...why is there a day for introducing girls to engineering and why should we even care if women don't go into engineering?

There is a stereotype of the typical engineer: typically a nerdy guy with a pocket protector and a slide rule...or in these days a smart phone app.

And in some ways this is true. This type of person is often attracted to engineering but there are many kinds of engineering jobs available such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, software engineering, aerospace engineering and more.

Although math and science play key roles in engineering, there is also a need to be able to communicate (which is often not a male skill) and a view towards social change...also not a male strong point. Women and men do think differently and this is vital to the engineering field. And engineering can be very creative.

It's often difficult to attract women to engineering since there are so few female role models, but the only way to create more female role models is to have more female engineers. It starts with interesting girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). But it's up to parents to get their daughters interested in these subjects. But what if you're not interested in these subjects? It's not important for you to be interested, but for you to encourage your daughters' interests in these subjects. Check out this article on the parents' role. And here is a link to some "Girl Day" activities.

And it's not only here in the US that we have a shortage of female engineers, just check out this article from the UK.

So, spend some time with your daughters' today and introduce them to engineering. The world will thank you for it!

Happy Year of the Yang Fire Monkey!

I think most people are aware of the 12 animal signs of the Chinese Zodiac; Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig in that order. Unlike western astrology, which changes signs every month, Chinese astrology holds for the entire year:

  • Rat: 2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960, 1948
  • Ox: 2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961, 1949
  • Tiger: 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950
  • Rabbit: 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951
  • Dragon: 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952
  • Snake: 2013, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965, 1953
  • Horse: 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, 1954
  • Goat: 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1967, 1955
  • Monkey: 2016, 2004, 1992, 1980, 1968, 1956
  • Rooster: 2017, 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969, 1957
  • Dog: 2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958
  • Pig: 2019, 2007, 1995, 1983, 1971, 1959
Although, you must be careful if you were born in January or February because you may be considered part of the preceding year.

The Monkey's Traits: Sharp, Smart...

People born in a year of the Monkey are witty, intelligent, and have a magnetic personality.

Personality traits, like mischievousness, curiosity, and cleverness, make them very naughty.

Monkeys are masters of practical jokes, because they like playing most of the time. Though they don't have any bad intentions, their pranks sometimes hurt the feelings of others. Monkeys are fast learners and crafty opportunists.

They have many interests and need partners who are capable of stimulating them. While some like the eccentric nature of Monkeys, some don't trust their sly, restless, and inquisitive nature. Although they are clever and creative, monkeys can't always exhibit their talent properly. Monkeys like to take challenges and they prefer urban life to rural.
Each sign is also influenced by one of the five elements that the Chinese thought the world was made of: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water; again in that order. So, the 5 elements interacting with the 12 signs creates a 60 year cycle.

Each element rules for a 2 year cycle, with the first year being of yang energy (creation) and the second of yin energy (contracting). Yang being an even year and yin being an odd year. 6 of the signs are always yang: Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey and Dog. And 6 are always yin: Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster and Pig.

Most of you may also be familiar with the Yin Yang symbol:

The Yin Yang Symbol

The symbol of the yin yang, also known as the Tai Chi or Taiqi symbol, consists of a circle equally divided into black and white sections by a reverse S-like shape. Within the black section is a small circle of white. Within the white section is a small circle of black. Each of the individual aspects of the yin yang symbol has a significant meaning, as does the entire yin yang.

The Outer Circle

The outer circle of the yin yang sign represents everything in the universe and the universe itself. It encompasses the duality of everything that exists.

The Black Section

The black area represents yin with the following characteristics:
  • Feminine
  • Passive
  • Intuitive
  • Delusion
  • Moon
  • Dark
  • Cold
  • Submission
  • Contracting
  • Downward seeking
  • Downward movement
  • Night
  • Soft
  • Stillness
  • Rivers

The White Section

The white area represents the yang with the following characteristics:
  • Male
  • Active
  • Logical
  • Enlightenment
  • Bright
  • Sun
  • Light
  • Creation
  • Dominance
  • Upward movement
  • Strong
  • Hot
  • Expanding
  • Hard
  • Movement
  • Mountains
Here is the sequence for the 10 year cycles:
  • Yang wood: 2014, 2004, 1994, 1984, 1974, 1964, 1954
  • Yin wood: 2015, 2005, 1995, 1985, 1975, 1965, 1955
  • Yang fire: 2016, 2006, 1996, 1986, 1976, 1966, 1956
  • Yin fire: 2017, 2007, 1997, 1987, 1977, 1967, 1957
  • Yang earth: 2018, 2008, 1998, 1988, 1978, 1968, 1958
  • Yin earth: 2019, 2009, 1999, 1989, 1979, 1969, 1959
  • Yang metal: 2020, 2010, 2000, 1990, 1980, 1970, 1960
  • Yin metal: 2021, 2011. 2001, 1991, 1981, 1971, 1961
  • Yang water: 2022, 2012, 2002, 1992, 1982, 1972, 1962
  • Yin water: 2023, 2013, 2003, 1993, 1983, 1973, 1963
Here are the basic qualities of the 5 elements (first the mental qualities; followed by the emotions):
  • Wood: idealism, spontaneity, curiosity; anger, altruism
  • Fire: passion, intensity; hatred, love
  • Earth: agreeableness, honesty; anxiety, joy
  • Metal: intuition, rationality, mind; grief, bravery
  • Water: erudition, resourcefulness, wit; fear, gentleness

Happy #PlayMoreCardsDay

Today may or may not be "Play More Cards" day. It was on this date last year, but according to Bicycle Playing Cards, it was yesterday.

Either way, if you're getting tired of the usual card games, try The Deck of Cards Workout instead.

You can create an awesome workout, just using a deck of cards. I've seen a couple of different workouts online, but this one from Brian Korning is my favorite:

So, what is the DOC workout?

It’s very simple.  A trainer (or partner) takes a deck of playing cards (sans Jokers) and shuffles them. Each of the four suites (hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades) is assigned a particular exercise.  The number of each exercise you do is the face value of the cards with 2-10 equal to the number, jacks = 11, queens = 12, kings = 13 and aces = 14.   The timer begins when you flip the very first card.  The person who is flipping the cards will have the next card on the top of the deck ready so that as soon as you complete that exercise, you go right into the next one.  You can take rest breaks to catch your breath and get a drink of water.  But… the clock keeps running.

The Exercises

I like to use the four exercises that Jay initially put me through. They are as follows:
  • Hearts = Push Ups (Ladies can do them from the knees)
  • Diamonds = Sit Ups (or crunches)
  • Spades = Squats with a weight (10 lbs for ladies, 25 lbs for men)
  • Clubs = Burpees
Check out the article to find out more. Then try it out and let me know what you think!

Ready to combat cold/flu season?

There seems to be something going around, so this is pretty appropriate. This is from my SendOutCards blog...please go over and check it out and sign up for my monthly email.

32224938_MGet your medicine cabinet ready – cold and flu season is upon us. While putting your family in plastic bubbles to avoid the germs might sound like a good idea (it’s not!), here are a few easier ways to combat these germs and keep your family healthy.
Separate. When one family member gets sick, isolate them from the others. They do not need to be locked in a room alone, but keep them isolated as much as possible to prevent spreading the germs. If more than one comes down with it, keep them together. Pick a bedroom or family room and set it up so that they can stay there together. Bring in puzzles, games, movies, snacks, extra blankets, etc., so they can get comfortable and rest.
Sharing is not caring! More than likely, if you have one family member sick, the whole family will eventually get it. While it seems impossible to get the kids to share toys, sharing illness is another story. If the illness warrants a doctor’s visit, ask the doctor to put the rest of your family on stand-by, allowing you to call and request medicine if the others get sick. Your doctor may go ahead and write a prescription for the entire family, just in case. It will definitely save you money by avoiding individual appointments.
Natural alternatives. While prescription and OTC medicines are great at fighting illness, there are also some great natural medicines that can help alleviate symptoms in between doses. Check them out here!
Cleanliness. Washing your hands is important all the time. It is especially important now. Remind your kids (and yourself) to wash their hands regularly, especially after blowing their nose. Regularly wipe down surfaces, including doorknobs and light switches.
Organization. While being organized can’t actually fight off a cold, it can help you keep your sanity! Keep a dry erase board or notebook in a handy location to keep track of temperatures, medicine administered and symptoms. Designate a page for each person so that you have individual records. These are great to take to the doctor.
Getting sick is no fun, but it is a good excuse to curl up on the sofa and binge watch your favorite shows, so there is a bright side!

Network Marketing - a ladder scheme

The term "corporate ladder" is a misnomer. It signifies an orderly, single file, climb to the top.

The term "corporate pyramid" would be more appropriate. There are a lot of people fighting for fewer and fewer jobs as they move up the pyramid until you get to the lone position at the top.

Network marketing has often been called a "pyramid scheme" but it should be called a "ladder scheme". There is a nice, orderly climb up the ladder and as you reach each new level that level expands, making room for you. And there is no fighting your way to the top. The people below you are boosting you up, the people above you are pulling you up and the person on the next ladder over is giving you advice on how to make it to the top next to them.

Network Marketing - a ladder scheme
