Is it one of those pyramid things? #TBT

Let's dig way back in our archive and pull up this post from the Golden Era of my blog...2015!

How many times have you been asked that? I know that I have been asked a few times. But before you get all huffy, try to find out what they mean. Sometimes they have no idea what they're even asking about.

Suppose they tell you what they mean, so how do you respond? I'll try to cover a few responses that you can use depending on what they say to you.

1. Only the people at the top of the pyramid make any money. That's true, but everybody is at the top of their own pyramid. Or more seriously, everybody can make it to the top in a network marketing business. How many other businesses can say that?

2. The only people who make money are the ones who got in at the beginning. The only advantage that the people who started early is more practice. Anybody who puts in the work can make money.

3. You only make money if you recruit someone else. Yes and no. Usually there is some kind of bonus if you sign up another distributor (or whatever the particular company calls their representatives), but only after the new distributor signs up some customers. Customers are the lifeblood of legitimate businesses. If there are no products or services being sold, then the business is not legitimate. But the beauty of network marketing is the leveraged residual income. So, what the heck does that mean? It means that you make a little money from the customers that you sign up directly, plus a little bit from the customers that your distributors sign up, plus a little bit from the customers of the distributors that your distributors sign up, etc.

I can't tell you what other companies pay out, but SendOutCards will pay you from 2 - 27% for the efforts of others…not a bad deal! And 5% for your own purchases and 20% on your customers' purchases.

4. You have to get in on the ground floor. It's often better to get in early, see #2 above, but it's bad to get in too early. Usually it takes about 1 1/2 years or so for a company to become established. If you join a company before this time, there's about a 90% chance that they may go out of business, according to Harvard Business School. And yes, HBS teaches network marketing.

Network marketing is not only a legitimate business model, but you may see more established businesses taking on the model. Why? Because it's a much more effective way of selling a product or service. How so? In the standard marketing model, a company pays an advertising firm money up front to come up with an advertising campaign, which may or may not produce results. Then a sales force is hired to sell the product. A lot of salespeople are on a commission basis, but they may have a base salary whether they sell anything or not. The company may be out thousands or even millions of dollars before an item or service is even sold. But with network marketing, there is no money paid until an item or service is sold. There is no advertising campaign. The products are sold by word of mouth by independent contractors; whether they're called distributors, representatives, consultants, or ambassadors. Money is only paid out when goods or services are sold to a customer, which makes it very inexpensive and efficient for the companies selling the product or service, which is why they usually offer a decent commission. And usually the only limit to how much you can earn is how much you and your team can sell. Many of the top distributors are making 6 or 7 figures a month. And many more are making a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month.

Years ago I was in a network marketing company, but I did absolutely nothing with it until I read "Why We Want You to be Rich" by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki where they talked about how network marketing could be an ideal way to get rich. So, I got more active in network marketing. I'm not where I want to be yet, but I'm making progress.

The Revenge of Analog

This post is from a podcast at "The Art of Manliness".

Here is some info on the podcast:
My guest tracks that rebellion in his book, The Revenge of Analog. Today on the show, David Sax and I talk about why we’re seeing a return to analog products like vinyl records, hardcopy books, and pen and paper — and it’s not because of nostalgia. David goes into detail about the sudden revival of vinyl and turntables and why it’s more than just some hipster fad, why hardcopy book sales are going up while ebook sales are declining, and why writing with pen and paper unleashes creativity compared to typing or writing on a screen. He then gets into how the internet is counterintuitively driving this upsurge of interest in tangible products and the benefits we get psychologically, culturally, and economically by living in an analog world.
Why is it that when everything is being digitized and we can carry thousands of pictures on our phones, as well as complete music libraries and even libraries of books with us at all times that vinyl records and paper books are making a comeback?

Some of the reasons are that humans are tactile creatures...we like touching stuff. And we like displaying our stuff. It's much more impressive to point to our vinyl collection or our shelves of books than it is to say "I have 5,000 songs on my iPad". And having books or records on display makes it easier for a guest to start a conversation about a book or record that catches their eye. Or even with a stranger at the airport or train station who has a book sitting next to them. It's not quite the same if you stare at someone's screen on their phone or tablet and tell them "I really like that book, too"!

And it's easier to loan out or giveaway stuff when you can just pick it up and hand it to someone!

Show Highlights

  • When it was that David noticed “real” stuff was making a comeback
  • Why “the old thing is rendered obsolete by the new thing” isn’t quite accurate
  • What is it that’s fueling the “revenge of the analog”?
  • How people are “maturing” with their technology use and finding ways to balance their tech use with tangible items
  • The irony of the internet helping drive the revenge of the analog
  • The vinyl comeback and its example of the larger analog phenomenon
  • Why people enjoy tangible things in spite of its seeming inconvenience
  • The emotional connection people have to objects you can heft in your hands
  • How tangible items make socializing easier and more pleasant
  • Why paper books didn’t die, in spite of that prediction many years ago
  • The surprising percentage of books sold that are ebooks
  • Why humans like sensory feedback
  • Brett’s tin foil hat reason for enjoying tangible goods
  • Are we really moving beyond an “ownership” society?
  • Why folks are still drawn to pen and paper
  • The value of writing (and drawing!) things down
  • How architecture has suffered in the digital age
  • The importance of embracing imperfection
  • Why men enjoy “stuff” and collecting things
This is also why paper greeting cards are so much better than e-cards. People will rarely print out an e-card and hang it on their refrigerator or put it on their mantle or desk. A real greeting card is something that can be touched, displayed and shared easily...there is no cumbersome phone or tablet to get in the way.

And if you haven't downloaded the SendOutCards app, go ahead and do so. It's free and if you're not already a SendOutCards customer or distributor the first three cards that you send are on me!

My 5 year SendOutCards anniversary

Five years ago today I signed up as a distributor with SendOutCards. At the time I hadn't seen any of the cards or gifts. I hadn't sent a card. In fact, I'd only heard about SendOutCards four days before. Check out this blog post from last week to find out more about that first introduction to SOC.

The other company I was in at the time was a health and fitness company. They had a monthly autoship of their protein drink, but after being in the company for 4 months I still had 3 1/2 bags of the drink mix. That's when I decided to concentrate on SendOutCards and to let that other business go.

That was one of the best decisions of my life! I know you hear that all the time, but it's true. Everybody that I've met has been very nice and very supportive. The company leadership is amazing...from the CEO, Kody Bateman to the President of Field Operations, Steve Schulz to the Vice President of Marketing, Vanessa Hunter to the top leaders in the field such as Jordan Adler and DeMarr Zimmerman as well as pretty much everyone else I've met or talked to.

And SendOutCards is the only product I can think of that immediately makes you feel good as soon as you use it! And a few days later, the person you sent a card or gift to feels good also.

I'm looking forward to many more years with SendOutCards!

And if you haven't downloaded the SendOutCards app, go ahead and do so. It's free and if you're not already a SendOutCards customer or distributor the first three cards that you send are on me!

Personal development with a compensation plan attached

That's probably the best description of network marketing that I've ever heard. Personal development is one of the keys to being successful in network marketing. But where do you start? While there are many excellent books, articles, audios and videos on the subject, one of the best ways might be by playing a game.

Starting this Saturday, I'm going to be playing "MLM The Game". It's a fun, interactive way to learn more about the network marketing industry, whether you're a veteran, novice or someone that has no idea what I'm talking about! Come along and play the game...it's non-company specific...and you'll learn valuable skills and have a chance to practice them.

Here's an excerpt from their webpage:
MLM the Game is designed with the representative in mind. It will teach you, your team members, and your prospects the fundamentals of network marketing and the reality of the business.
Playing a game involves you physically, mentally and emotionally. You get the most out of a learning experience when you put your whole self into it. Playing MLM The Game gives you endless opportunities to practice your skills in the 5 fundamentals essential for network marketing success.
Games are powerful training tools because they reflect our true behavior in life and in business. Playing MLM The Game allows you to see where the strengths and weaknesses are in yourself and your team members. If you are reacting or behaving a certain way in a game, you can bet you are doing the same things in real life. The areas where you struggle during the game, will be the areas you struggle in your business. The more you play, the more you will notice, and begin to improve your areas of challenge.
When we notice things that are holding us back in a friendly, fun, and supportive learning environment, it allows us to develop better habits and improve upon the things that are inhibiting our growth.
As a learning tool, games enable you to have a hands on learning experience that invites you into the scenarios, thought processes, and emotions you experience in the real world. Multiple senses are engaged and you are interacting with others which causes you to be emotionally involved. All of this improves memory retention and creates an accelerated learning environment, and offers powerful mlm training.
For many people, network marketing is a different type of business model that can be hard to grasp. MLM The Game simplifies the business model, and allows beginners to understand this remarkable form of entrepreneurship, and how truly simple it is. Furthermore, it gives the leaders an opportunity to connect with their team, and discover the best ways to help them succeed.
Come develop your skills, have your team come and develop theirs and you can even bring prospects to give them a fun introduction to the industry.

I will be holding the game at my apartment on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month, from 1:00 to 4:00. I may add additional times if there is a demand for it, but for now that will be the only times the game is offered.

So, whether you're with SendOutCards, LegalShield, Ambit Energy, ACN, Mary Kay, Nerium or any other company, come on over and play with others in the industry. You'll learn from each other and have a fun time doing it!

Email me for details.

Sticking it to the man

Sometimes you have to rise up against your oppressors and tell them that you're not going to take it anymore!

And that's exactly what I did last night! Although, in this case I was the man and I rebelled against my arbitrary blog post deadline. I'm still feeling a little under the weather and decided to go to bed early instead of having my blog ready to be published at 6:00 AM Pacific Time. Not only did I go to bed early but I slept in late and took a nice, hot bath to help clear my sinuses. And now that I'm feeling better, it's time for:

Let's share (revisited) #TBT

Well, it looks like we have another throwback to a throwback. This post is from last year.

This past January I did a post called "Let's share" and it was about the difference between liking, commenting, and sharing on Facebook. Since then, FB has come out with its new emojis so I figured it was time to update this. I haven't checked to see if the original article I used in my post has been updated, so this is just my opinion on the subject. (I have since checked and that article doesn't contain info on the new emojis)

So, way back in the distant past of 2 months ago I stated that a Like was worth 1 point, a Comment was worth 7 points and a Share was worth 14 points. But where do these new choices fit in?

In my own humble opinion, since they're only slightly more difficult than hitting like, I think they should fall in between Like and Comment. So, I give them a 4...since they do convey more about how you feel about the post.

This is my ranking of the choices:

Like - 1 point
New emojis - 4 points
Comment - 7 points
Share - 14 points

Please like, love, wow, comment or share my post. And the more of these choices that you apply, the better!

Cashflow 101

I haven't talked about this much lately. Mainly because I haven't played much since I moved last year, since it's 65 miles each way to the game location! But I am going this Saturday since it's the fifth anniversary of when I started playing the game and when I first learned about SendOutCards!

The Cashflow game was created by Robert Kiyosaki of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" fame. I've played Cashflow online quite a bit, although I didn't like the new version the last few times I've played it...maybe I'll try it again.

There are two versions of the Cashflow game...101 and 202. And just like with college courses, the 202 is a more advanced game, although I've never played it.

Right before I moved to Pleasanton five years ago, I had just heard about Meetup and figured I'd like to get to know new people in the area. There was a meetup group in San Ramon, a couple of towns away, that featured the Cashflow game. At this point I'd played it online a few times and figured I could meet new people and play the game in person.

I went to that first game on Saturday, March 24, 2012, and the only other person there was the organizer, Dennis Beckman, He talked about becoming your own banker, which is something else I'm interested in. If you want to find out more, I suggest the book "Becoming Your Own Banker". About halfway through the game another guy showed up...Gregory Festo. After the game was over Gregory asked if we wanted to see something cool and we did. What he showed us was SendOutCards, which I thought was a great tool for promoting the other network marketing company I was in at the time. I've since gotten out of the other company, but on the 28th of this month it'll be 5 years since I've signed up as a distributor for SendOutCards.

Here's the link to the Meetup page for this Saturday's game.

And if you haven't downloaded the SendOutCards app yet, here's the link. There's an app for Android and iOS. Just click on the link and it'll take you to the right place. There is absolutely no commitment and you can even send the first three cards absolutely free! If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Rainy Days and Mondays

It's a rainy Monday evening as I write this. I stayed home from work tonight because I'm feeling a bit under the weather. Nothing serious just a cold or maybe allergies but I figured this would be just interesting days today. Before I get to that, I must confess that I was deeply in love with Karen Carpenter back in the 70's. In fact, when she died my sister called me at work and told me that my girlfriend had died :-(

Calm Energy

Today's blog post is based on the book Calm Energy by Robert E. Thayer. I read it several years ago but have been re-reading it the past few days. I'd been thinking recently about why it's so hard to sleep when we may be totally exhausted, so I turned to this book again to see if it shed some light on the subject.

In the chart below, we want to keep to the left side of the diagram. Ideally we'd like to have Calm-Energy during the day and Calm-Tiredness when we sleep, but most of us are in the lower right quadrant...we are tired but too stressed to sleep. Occasional Tense-Energy is ok...when we are excited about something or maybe a bit nervous for a test or a competition of some kind. But in general, we want to be on the Calm side.
The primary mood effect of moderate exercise is increased energy, and the primary mood effect of intense exercise is reduced tension.

One of the best ways to boost energy and relieve stress is through exercise. But there are other ways, such as meditation and yoga. I need to start doing yoga again...it's a great way to relax and to keep the old body limber!

When your energy is low and/or your tension is high, this is often a time that you'll self medicate to make yourself feel better. This may include drugs or alcohol, but another very common way is to eat...usually something that contains a lot of fat or sugar!

If you find yourself craving something sweet, try drinking some water. A lot of times you may mistake thirst for hunger. If you're still hungry try taking a brisk, 10 minute walk. And if you're still hungry, try eating a healthy snack such as fruit or raw nuts.

There are many ideas for how to combat tense tiredness in the book. Be sure to check it out. I'm going to refer to some other books I have to see if we can come up with more info on how to decrease your appetite by decreasing your stress and increasing your energy.

10 Places to Meet Women Other Than a Bar or Nightclub #TBT

We're going back to this date last year. I still haven't taken advantage of any of these, although my then soon to be ex-wife is now ex.

This isn't even close to what I was planning to write about today, but it seems appropriate since I just moved.

Where did you meet your current spouse/significant other? I met my soon to be ex-wife in a sleazy bar in Manville, NJ. She always hated when I described our meeting that way...but who cares? Actually, it was a very nice bar in Manville, NJ.

Here's another post courtesy of The Art of Manliness:

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Joe Weber.
Who: Her.
What: Potentially a relationship.
Where: …um…
It’s that last question where most guys get stuck and end up with the cliche answer of “the bar.” The reality is very few relationships begin in bars and pubs. According to a survey by sociologist David Grazian, only 20% of adults met their most recent partner at a bar.  So there has to be other places to meet a woman, right?
Sure there are. But first, do yourself a favor. Forget the where for a second and instead focus on the why. Why are you looking? Be honest. If your answer is: “because I’m unhappy/bored with being alone, and I’d just really like to be in a relationship…” then you might as well be looking for a date on Jupiter. Get more than okay with yourself and be fine with being alone, and then it’ll happen. As to where? Could be anywhere. Amazing, single women are certainly out there. But they tend to only reveal themselves as such to confident men who are open to a relationship, yet at the same time aren’t exhibiting the slightest hint of desperation. Now with all that said, here’s a few non-bar places to keep your ears up…

Your Friend’s House

You got friends right? Friends that might even be married or have significant others? These friends probably throw parties/get-togethers/poker tournaments/Kentucky Derby shindigs (whatever, you get the point) from time to time. Show up, look good, have fun. One of those times your pal’s wife is going to invite her new co-worker friend to that same party. Maybe you two will hit it off. Just don’t egg your friends on to set you up.

Charity Galas / Non Profit Functions

Nice guys don’t always finish last. And nice guys show up to charity events to support great causes. Every non profit from food banks to humane societies have started throwing swanky evening affairs. Silent auctions, live auctions, dinner, dancing, etc…not a bad way to spend some cash for a good cause and maybe meet a few people along the way.

The Gym

It’s a pretty difficult place to launch a relationship, but if you’re a gym rat that gets to your health club of choice at the same set time, more than a few days a week, then you’re going to see some familiar faces. You get used to seeing the regulars. And if there’s a particular regular that you find yourself working out around that’s of some interest to you? An opportunity might present itself. Plus, if you care about your health, and she cares about hers, well there’s something in common already. But this is seriously dangerous. High adrenaline + lack of clothing almost always makes you the creep. She’s there to workout. Just like you. Respect that. But don’t shy away from it if there’s maybe something there.

Coffee Shops

They’re just like bars. Only instead of alcohol, the drug is caffeine. And the women who frequent coffee shops tend to be more laid-back and grounded.

Work

Take a look at these awesome plans I’ve drawn up here…to take you out on a date.
It’s where I met my wife. Actually, we met before I had the job there. I went in for the interview, saw her walk by, and felt extra motivated to land the gig. It can get pretty dicey if you’re dating someone in your workplace, but if it’s someone you really connect with? It’s worth the land mines. Just know your company’s procedure and shoot a quick email to HR. Best case scenario is that the two of you become great friends, develop a mutual attraction, and then she leaves to take a better job at an ad agency across town. Worked out perfect for me.

The Bank

The tellers. Goodness. You’re given just the right amount of time to make small talk and perhaps even make her laugh. Plus you have a natural exit each time. Let that develop. And if it doesn’t work out? There’s always the ATM.

The Dog Park

Pet owners get each other. Especially those that love their dogs. If your dog and her dog get along and like to play? Bonus. But don’t go out looking to adopt a dog just to use as date bait.

Online

Don’t laugh. You’re online right now. And as great of an idea as an Art of Manliness dating site spin-off may be, Brett hasn’t gotten to that one yet. Yes there are plenty of odd ones (both male and female) lurking on dating websites. But if you live in a city where people get married young? And those that aren’t married have a hard time connecting? It’s not a total waste of time. Two of my most favorite people on the planet met online. She’s a whip smart, big city gal with a job that takes her around the world…and he’s a works with his hands, born and raised in North Dakota, ready to match wits, hunter-type who loves his yellow lab and 57 Chevy. They ended up together because they’re perfect for each other and neither was desperate to be in a relationship. That and he resisted making his dating site profile pic one of him holding up his latest kill from a hunt. Don’t do that. Women don’t tend to like that.

An Airplane/Airport

Step 1: Leave your crocs and torn jeans at home. Attractive women seem to really be into guys who take the time to dress well when travelling. It’s probably because outside of Walmart, an airplane is where people tend to dress their absolute worst. Look down the rows of any major commercial jet and most people look like they’re dressed to clean out the garage. If you’re the guy in the suit, or even nice jeans, decent shoes, and a cotton blazer? Congrats. She’ll want to sit next to you or maybe even share a drink during a layover. The most obvious drawback is that she might not live where you live.

Church

Now don’t go showing up to some church just so you can pick up the ladies. Even if they don’t immediately sniff out your insincerity, success will mean snagging a devout woman who will eventually discover your true intentions and the fact that you’re not on the same page. But if you’re already the religious type, church is a great place to meet women. First, the odds are already in your favor with women outnumbering men at nearly every church. Second, many of these women are looking to meet Mr. Right, so they’re approachable. Third, you know right off the bat that all these women likely share your same religious beliefs and values, which is an important factor in the success of long term relationships.
Many churches have singles programs that you can join. Sign up for the activities and get involved.
Despite the benefits of meeting women at church, there are a few drawbacks. The dating pool is often small which can create a lot of drama. For example, you can date one woman one month and decide it won’t work, so you break it off. Problem is you’ll still have to see her Sunday, which can make things awkward. Things can get even more uncomfortable if you decide to date another woman in your congregation. Tread carefully.

The Rest – Where Women Tend to Be

Rec sports leagues, volunteer organization events, bookstores, affordable furniture and decor stores like Cost Plus World Market, even Bed Bath & Beyond. These are all places where you can, if you so choose, engage a great looking woman in conversation without coming off as creepy. How do I know? I asked a panel of six female friends, and they all agreed that these extra locations should give a guy ample opportunities to strike up a conversation with someone whom he probably has something in common with. For the shopping locations, they’re relatively gender neutral but are also places where most women will gladly give you her opinion on an item (a new book, a bottle of wine, something that hangs on a wall). Activities like sports leagues or volunteer organizations guarantee you’ll have something to talk about. Whether it’s the cause you’re supporting, or the softball game that was just played. Just be your normal charming self, dress like you care about your appearance (because you do right?), and let it happen.
As a final note, keep in mind that women aren’t specifically in these places to be picked up by a dude. They’re working, exercising, and relaxing. So be wary of becoming an annoyance, where she has to dread seeing you walk in the door at her place of work or has to switch her workout time to avoid seeing you at the gym. Start with really short, passing chit chat, and slowly work towards having a little longer conversation. If she’s giving off signs that she’s into you, then continue. If not, then back off. And if you can’t read those kinds of social cues? Well you should probably work on that before you start dating.
