Custom branding #TBT

Five years ago this was a new thing that you had to pay extra for...now you can do this for free on each and every card that you send without having to do anything special!

SendOutCards has just introduced custom branding. What does it mean? It means that you can now design the back panel of your greeting cards. You can add a custom logo, photos or just more space to type.

You can create up to 10 custom card back panels, with or without the return address. If you need additional designs, you can edit an existing design, or delete one and create a new one. But you can only have 10 active at a time. (You can have as many backs as you want)

When you create a card or a campaign, you can choose which card back to use as you create the card.

There is a one time fee of $149 for the ability to create custom back panels, as well as a custom handwriting font and 4 signatures to use inside your cards (a $25 value) and a $49 annual renewal fee. (Again this is free now! Although you can still purchase the handwriting fonts and signatures)

Any new or existing customer or distributor has access to the custom branding package right now. All you have to do is go to Account -> Purchase Products and select 11442 Custom Branding Package.

Here are some examples of what people have done so far:

All of these examples have the addresses in the upper left corner, but you do have the option of not including the addresses. The lower right corner is reserved for the barcode. (Now the barcode is located in the lower center of the back panel)

#FudgeGiveaway

Last week I wrote about the fudge giveaway. Here are some excerpts from that post, along with some updates.

I shared a Facebook Live and then I said:
What it boils down to is to:
  1. Watch this video
  2. Share the video
  3. Be a customer
If you watch the video, let me know that you watched it and I'll add your name to the drawing.

If you share the video and your friend watches it, let me know and you both get an entry into the drawing.

If you're an existing customer (or affiliate) of mine, you get an entry into the drawing. Or if you send a free card (link on the video), you become a new customer and you'll get an entry to the drawing. Plus:
  • If you're on a $17/month account, you'll receive an additional ticket
  • If you're on a $37/month account, you'll receive two additional tickets
  • If you're on a $97/month account, you'll receive five additional tickets
  • If you purchase a $395 System Package, you'll receive 20 additional tickets
I'll be posting 2 or 3 videos a week between now and Friday, June 12th, and I'll be drawing three names every Friday...so the more videos you watch and share the better your chances of winning. And if you're a customer, you get additional chances to win!
I've posted 3 videos since then and you get an entry for each one that you watch and share.

(Video 1 is in step 1 above)

Video 2
Video 3
Video 4

As of the time of this writing, there are only 9 tickets in the drawing...3 people have 2 entries each and 3 people have 1 entry each. Everyone should have at least four entries (one for each video) plus any bonus tickets for being a customer or an affiliate.

#MapReadingWeek

Map Reading Week began yesterday and runs through Sunday. I've written about map reading here and here. The first post talks about orienteering and how to read a topographic map, while the second post talks about street maps.

In the blog post about orienteering I talk about several permanent courses. Here is a list of courses in the SF Bay Area. And one in Modesto. And here is a list of semi-permanent "Corona" training courses, again in the SF Bay Area.

If you're outside my area, look for local permanent courses here.

Go out and have some map and compass fun! I'll probably be doing the two courses in Walnut Creek on Saturday, since I check my PO Box in San Ramon every two weeks and this Saturday is the day.

#MemorialDay

This year we're probably not celebrating this weekend the way we normally would, with camping, barbecues, going to the beach or just hanging out with friends and family. So, we may have some more time to think about the real meaning of Memorial Day.

I'm going to share a Facebook post on what I had to say on Saturday:

Duplication principles #TBT

Today's blog post was originally published last year:

Duplication is the heart of growing a network marketing business. In his weekly SendOutCards call Jordan Adler addresses duplication. Although this is slanted towards SOC, the principles apply to any business.

First Jordan talks about making the "big money" and although some people are looking for big money, most people can't relate to that. In fact, most people are really looking for a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month.

He then talks about duplication is something that you create. The company doesn't create it, your upline doesn't create it...you create it.

One of the best ways to duplicate is to invite people to events. Anyone can invite people to events that are put on by the company or someone else in the organization.

I'm sure you've heard about the "3 who get 3 who get 3"

We all know that it never works out this way. A better plan is to keep adding new customers and affiliates every month...if you bring in 2 affiliates a month for 4 years, you'll have 96 affiliates under you.

Out of this 96, you'll find a few key people...the ones who take initiative to grow the business. When you get 4 key people in one leg, this is what Jordan calls a freedom leg. You'll probably make enough money from this one leg to cover your car payment. When you get a second freedom leg, you'll also be able to cover your rent or mortgage. A third leg? You no longer need a job! Your residual income is covering your living expenses. This is financial freedom...you no longer need to trade your time for money. Although at this point, your discretionary income isn't very high. The fourth leg will give you discretionary income. And the fifth leg will bring you wealth. The last I heard, Jordan had 7 freedom legs bringing him over a million dollars a year.

On next week's call, Jordan will be giving examples of things you can do to create duplication in your business...and I'll write about it next Tuesday.

Apparently, I didn't write about this the following week!

Who wants some fudge?

Last week I did a quick contest in honor of Nutty Fudge Day, but since Fudge Day is coming up on June 16th I thought I'd do a better job of putting together a contest.

Yesterday, I posted a FB Live detailing the things you could do to qualify for the drawing:

What it boils down to is to:
  1. Watch this video
  2. Share the video
  3. Be a customer

If you watch the video, let me know that you watched it and I'll add your name to the drawing.

If you share the video and your friend watches it, let me know and you both get an entry into the drawing.

If you're an existing customer (or affiliate) of mine, you get an entry into the drawing. Or if you send a free card (link on the video), you become a new customer and you'll get an entry to the drawing. Plus:

  • If you're on a $37/month account, you'll receive two additional tickets
  • If you're on a $97/month account, you'll receive five additional tickets
  • If you purchase a $395 System Package, you'll receive 20 additional tickets

What Board Games Teach Us About Life

Have you been playing more board games the last few months?

Today's blog post is based on a podcast from The Art of Manliness:
Board games have long been a source of social activity and family entertainment. But my guest today makes the case that board games can be more than just a way to while away the time, and can also offer insights about relationships, decision making, and the changing currents of culture. His name is Jonathan Kay and he’s a co-author of the book Your Move: What Board Games Teach Us About Life. We begin our conversation discussing the board game renaissance that has taken place in the past twenty years and how today’s board games are much more nuanced, complex, and arguably more fun than the classic games you probably played as a kid. Jonathan and I then discuss how the evolution of the board game Life can give us insights into our culture’s changing ideas of virtue and how board games often reflect the attitudes of a given time. We then discuss what cooperative games like Pandemic tell us about how to handle overbearing people and how the game Dead of Winter highlights the way private interests often conflict with group interests. Jonathan then shares why Monopoly is such a divisive game and whether board games can teach resilience. At the end of the show, Jonathan gives his personal recommendations for board games to check out that are way better than the chutes and ladders type games you played growing up.
Here are the highlights of the show:
  • The board game renaissance of the last couple decades and how they’re different from the games of the mid-20th century
  • The surprising WWII legacy and response of modern board games
  • How board games explore and inculcate a culture’s values
  • Games and negotiating
  • What the game Pandemic can teach us right now in the midst of a real pandemic
  • What games teach us about group dynamics
  • The rise of cooperative games
  • Why does Monopoly cause such strong opinions? What are its inherent flaws?
  • The real life lessons that board games can teach even adults
Some of these games sound interesting, however the game Pandemic is especially timely right now. Pandemic is a cooperative game...where you work together to stop pandemics. I think I might buy this game...you only need two to four players and about 45 minutes of time.

Jonathan recommends a game called Splendor if you want to get started with a modern style game.

Beach Money #TBT

This is an interesting Throwback Thursday, since this post was originally published on a Thursday five years ago. This is also a very autobiographical post...you can learn a lot about me from this post:

Beach Money is the title of the book written by my SendOutCards upline, Jordan Adler (Jordan has since written another book..."Better Than Beach Money"). The book is available in the SendOutCards gift shop or at www.beachmoney.com. I find the title very appealing, since I've loved the beach as far back as I can remember.

I grew up in Oakland, CA which is right on San Francisco Bay. We used to go to the beach in Alameda, which is an island on the bay. Alameda is about a 5 minute drive from where I grew up. The beach on the southwest end of Alameda is called South Shore. There's always been a shopping center there and when I was a kid there was also an amusement park. Our pediatricians were there, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Mitchell. Also, the Walgreens lunch counter. We didn't eat out an awful lot when I was a kid, but I remember eating there at least once.

But right after high school we moved a little farther north…first to Rohnert Park, then to Sebastopol. We lived on Adele Avenue in Rohnert Park, which is in the "A" section of town. One time I rode my bike from our house to Bodega Bay, where Hitchcock filmed "The Birds", to get back to the water. I also rode my bike to Dillon Beach to watch the hang gliders. Hang gliding was still pretty new in the early to mid 70's. In fact, I was a member of the Southern California Hang Gliding Association, which went on to become the United States Hang Gliding Association not much after that. There was a hang gliding school at Dillon Beach. We only stayed in Rohnert Park for a few months since we were just renting. Jobs were tough to come by because Sonoma State Universitywas located there, (My son, Nick's, high school graduation ceremony was held there about 4 years ago.) so I ended up enlisting in the Air Force. I had a few months between the time I enlisted until I had to leave for basic training, so I got to live in the house in Sebastopol for a while. I went to basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX and I stayed there for 9 more months for my technical school…this whole time I was far, far away from a beach!

However, while I was at Lackland my parents became the resident managers of some beach homes right on Monterey Bay, called Monterey Dunes Colony! I left Lackland AFB in December of 1975 and I had a month's leave before I had to be at RAF Croughton in England. So, I got to spend an entire month right on the beach. Monterey Bay is not known for warm temperatures, but that December was warm enough to go swimming in the pool. I only spent about year at Croughton (pronounced kraut en, not crouton) and then I went to live with my parents, sister and brother on the beach full time. In case you haven't guessed, I loved it there! I worked for my parents part-time and went to school full time (gotta love the GI Bill!).

However, by 1980 my parents wanted to move on, so they bought a campground in Townsend, TN. At first I planned on going with them, but the thought of leaving California again was very unpleasant, so I got a job with the US Census Bureau and stayed behind with my brother and sister. But after a few months the census was over and I needed to find another job or move to TN. Luckily, the father of one of the guys I worked with worked for AT&T. Brian wasn't interested in working for AT&T but he knew that I had a background in electronics, so on August 10, 1980 I became an AT&T employee. And Brian was also one of the main reasons I started in Redwood City. There was an office in Salinas, where I was now living with my sister. It was only a few minutes from Monterey Bay, but I didn't want to stay there…I wanted to get back to the SF Bay Area. Anyway, back to Brian. Brian wanted to go to work for Marine World/Africa USA, an amusement park that featured lions and tigers and bears (admit it, you said oh my!), and aquatic animals such as dolphins. Marine World was located in Redwood City which is right on SF Bay. Redwood City is on the SF Peninsula and Oakland is in the East Bay, so this was a totally different perspective! After about 3 1/2 years I transferred from the Redwood City office to downtown SF, but I continued living with my friend Tom in Redwood City.

While I was working in SF, I took a job with AT&T in New Jersey where I worked as a course developer and instructor. I spent a total of 9 months in New Jersey. During that time I wrote my course and taught it. I taught the 2 day course 20 times in 16 cities in 12 weeks! And during that time the network that my course taught about was constantly changing, so whenever I got back to NJ, I spent the entire weekend in the office rewriting the course and then printing 20-30 copies to take with me to the 2 classes I was teaching the following week. After 9 months of many long hours at work, I decided it was time to go back to CA…even though NJ is right on the Atlantic it wasn't CA. Although I did go to the Jersey Shore once and to Atlantic City a few times, I was ready to go back. I met my future wife in NJ and when I wanted to move to CA, she wanted to come with me.

We settled in Vacaville…fairly far from the beach. The wife and kids don't like to travel, so we didn't go many places, however we did spend a week in Cancun…right on the beach at the Riu Cancun Hotel. The hotel, an all inclusive resort, had just opened the month before, and since they were still working the kinks out, it was fairly cheap.

In 1997, I started thinking it was time to start planning for retirement so I enlisted in the CA Air National Guard. In January of 1998 I left for 6 months of training at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. Biloxi is right on the Gulf of Mexico…and they have casinos (another interest of mine). However, the ANG wasn't quite what I expected, so I got out in early 2001, but re-enlisted in early 2002. In 2005, I spent 2 1/2 months deployed to Diego Garcia in the middle of the Indian Ocean…talk about tropical beaches!

In March of 2012, my wife and I separated; and in May of 2012 I went to Kauai, HI with my sister and her friend Susan. I got to spend my 56th birthday in Hawaii. That was a good year for me…I was born on 5/6/56 and I was 56 years old!

So, back to Beach Money. The book talks about how to earn a residual income in a business that you can run from anywhere, even the beach! I highly recommend it. And if you're still awake, here are the

And yesterday I wrote about #WorldCocktailDay, which is today. But why do I write about these kinds of things? And why do I celebrate them?

Partly, I write about these things because I need something to write about, but mostly to get some engagement from my social media friends.

Yesterday, I shared the blog post with an excerpt that said “What's your favorite cocktail? Is it one of the five presented here? Or is it something different?”. I got a couple of suggestions and I'll probably get more today.

Also yesterday, I shared a photo of some nutty fudge that I got from SendOutCards:

As you can see, I had 2 calls to action on this post...the first was inviting them to see the comments if they wanted some fudge, since there will be a drawing for some free fudge this afternoon, and the second was to click on the link for this blog (which I include on all of my posts for interesting days to celebrate).

I ended up with 6 people signed up for a drawing that will have 3 winners. I'm sure that all six of them will be watching the Facebook Live, along with others I'm sure.

Again, this is all for engagement.

My biggest engagement came with a pumpkin spice caramels giveaway. It was originally going to be a one time drawing but it ended up lasting 9 weeks I think. This particular drawing required action on the part of the entrants. They got a ticket into the drawing for watching a SOC video, sharing the video with others and several other activities. More engagement.

Engagement is the primary purpose of the Interesting days segment. You can use these days to send cards or gifts to clients or prospects. Or you can use them for drawings. Or just for engagement.

Although, I highly recommend checking out the blog every day, since I often cover things that will be of use to business people (such as this post). But if you can't read it every day, then check out Friday and Saturday's posts. Friday's post is a summary of the articles published that week, while Saturday's is a compilation of the interesting days from the current week, the upcoming week, and the same week in the following month. If that's too much, there's a monthly recap published on the first Sunday of every month for the preceding month.

So, check out the most recent editions (at the time of this writing) of the week in review, your weekend guide to interesting days and the month in review. You can always find the most recent posts here.

#WorldCocktailDay

Since World Cocktail Day is coming up tomorrow, it seems like a good time to take a look at how to make a few cocktails. Today's blog post is based on an article from The Art of Manliness:
There’s been a trend lately to get back to the old way of doing things, especially when it comes to things we ingest. People are eating organic produce, for example, and some are going as far as planting their own gardens. Many chefs are serving old-world comfort food right next to their innovative dishes. This trend has also entered the world of libations. Drink menus around the country are starting to have more of the old classics included on them. Many mixologists are using these cocktails as starting points for newer versions that take advantage of the plethora of products out there today. Recipe books from classic bars such as the Old Waldorf-Astoria, The Savoy, and the Stork Club are available in reprint editions for the new generation to use. And who can forget Old Mr. Boston? They’ve been printing those books since 1935 and still do to this day.
I remember my dad having a copy of the Mr. Boston book when I was a kid.
But you don’t need a recipe book to get started mixing up some of the classic cocktails men have been drinking for decades (and in some cases, more than a century). Here’s how to create the 5 classic cocktails every man should know.
1. The Old Fashioned
2. The Manhattan
3. The Tom Collins
4. The Sidecar
5. The Martini
Complete recipes are available in the article.

This also ties in with #14 from yesterday's blog post by having a cocktail tasting party. And it's also just in time for World Whisky Day on Saturday.

What's your favorite cocktail? Is it one of the five presented here? Or is it something different?
