All the news that's fit to wrap around a dead fish

The week in review

Monday - "No blog post today"

Tuesday - "I'll be back in a couple" What's meant by a couple? A few? Etc? "A lot of this depends on context. A few dollars could be $3 - $5...probably less than $10 or $20. Unless you're Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, then a few might be several million."

Wednesday - "No blog post again today" Again? "Oh no! Two days in the same week. Just a busy week. Hopefully, the rest of the week will be better."

Thursday - "Residual bills #TBT" Why not residual income? "First, you must realize that your residual bills are someone else's residual income. Look at all those bills that you pay to the same people every month and you'll see how common residual income really is."

Residual bills #TBT

Today's post is a throwback to this date in 2015:

What is meant by residual bills and residual income? First, you must realize that your residual bills are someone else's residual income. Look at all those bills that you pay to the same people every month and you'll see how common residual income really is. Your car insurance, your car registration, your rent or mortgage, your utilities, your phone, your credit cards...these are all bills that you pay on a recurring basis.

Now look at your income. Is it recurring? Hopefully you get paid on a regular basis. But is it residual? Probably not. If you work 40 hours for 40 hours pay, then it's linear (or regular) income. But if you're on salary, or own your own business, then you may be working 60-80 hours for 40 hours pay. Residual income is income you make on a recurring basis for work that you did once. Does your insurance agent sell you a new policy every month. No, he or she sold you a policy once and you keep paying them to keep your policy in effect.

Authors, songwriters, musicians and a lot of others have residual income...but in these cases it's called royalties.

Most direct sales and network marketing businesses have residual income. You sign up a customer once and as long as they continue buying from you, you'll have residual income. Pretty good, right? But it can get even better. There is leveraged residual income...you get paid on the sales that other people make. You don't get paid for just signing up new people, which is a common misunderstanding, although you may get a signing bonus when they make their first sale...you get paid on the sales that these people under you make. This is also very common...look at real estate brokers, they usually make 50% of every commission made by their agents because they provide the opportunity to those agents. It's the same thing for network marketing...you provide the opportunity. And just like with a broker, if the agent (or distributor) doesn't make sales, there is no commission to split.

I don't know how much commission other companies pay, but SendOutCards pays you 20% of what each of your customers purchase and between 2% and 27% on the sales that people in your organization make, depending on what level you're at. The more people you provide an opportunity for, the more you'll make.

There are hundreds of network marketing and direct sales companies to choose from. If you look, I'm sure you'll find one with a product or service that you like. If you're interested, I know people in several companies I'd be glad to introduce you to.

I'll be back in a couple

A couple of what? Days? Weeks? Years? Minutes? Casual communications is very imprecise. Normally, you can get a good idea based on context. Without any further information it would probably be safe to assume a couple of blog posts or maybe a couple of days. But suppose you travel to visit your family every 2 years and you're saying goodbye to them...they could probably safely assume that you're talking about years.

How much is a couple? Two? Three? More? Less? If you're saying goodbye to a co-worker on Friday afternoon and you say "I'll see you in a couple of days", you probably mean that you'll see them on Monday...unless maybe you're getting together for a barbecue on Sunday.

Some people insist that a couple is exactly two...as in a married couple or a happy couple, which often may be the same. But how often is often? And how seldom is seldom? Seldom is not often and often is not seldom, but that could be the subject of another blog post.

I can't find the page now, but it said that all of these are an indeterminate number roughly as follows in my view:
A couple...around 2...maybe 2 or 3, but could be more depending on the context
A few...more than a couple...probably around 3 - 5, could be more or less
Several...more than a few...maybe 5 - 10, depending on context
A lot, many, a bunch, etc...more than several
A lot of this depends on context. A few dollars could be $3 - $5...probably less than $10 or $20. Unless you're Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, then a few might be several million.

How about a few pieces of candy? Depending on how much you like candy, that could be a couple of dozen pieces. Probably not exactly 24 pieces, but somewhere close to that. How about a handful? A handful of sand is quite a few grains of sand. I just grabbed a handful of regular M&M's. There were a few each of several different colors...5 yellow, 5 green. 4 blue, 4 brown and 3 orange. There is actually a breakdown of colors in a bag, according to Deal News:
On average, the mix of each variety of M&Ms follows these color percentage breakdown: M&M'S Milk Chocolate: 30% brown, 20% yellow, 20% red, 10% orange, 10% green, and 10% blue. M&M'S Peanut: 20% brown, 20% yellow, 20% blue, and 20% red, 10% orange, and 10% green.
There are 68,500 seats at Levi's Stadium. If you were at a Niners game and noticed that there were empty seats at the game, you may be tempted to say that there are a "few empty seats". Does that mean only 3 - 5 empty seats. Probably not, but it would be a small percentage.

Urgency or desire could also come into play. Suppose that an event is 6 months away. If you;re looking forward to a vacation in 6 months, it may be only a few months away. Or if your taxes are due in 6 months, you may still have several months left.

And then there are modifiers like very or quite. Very few is on the small side of few, possibly even a couple, while quite a few is more than a few...could even be several.

So, there you have a few (several?) of my thoughts on the subject.

No monthly musing today

As often happens, a great plan has gone awry and must be revisited. My plan was to do this monthly wrap-up on the last Sunday of the month, which is today, however there is another Friday left of this month. So, what shall I do? Should I go with my original Plan A or shall I go with Plan B? And if I go with Plan B, why didn't I start there? I should've looked at what could go wrong and then I'd have realized that the last Friday in the month doesn't always precede the last Sunday and I could've then decided that a better choice would be to use the first Sunday of the month to review the preceding month, which is what I'm going to do starting now.

So, starting next Sunday The Monthly Musing will be posted on the first Sunday of the month and will cover ALL of the Fridays of the previous month.

Law of attraction #TBT

This post is from 2 years ago:

What is the law of attraction? According to Wikipedia:
The law of attraction is the name given to the maxim "like attracts like" which in New Thought philosophy is used to sum up the idea that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts a person brings positive or negative experiences into their life. This belief is based upon the idea that people and their thoughts are both made from "pure energy", and the belief that like energy attracts like energy. One example used by Lisa Nichols in the film 'The Secret' is as follows: "Every time you look inside your mail expecting to see a bill, guess what? It'll be there. Each day you go out dreading the bill, you're never expecting anything great, you're thinking about debt, you're expecting debt. So debt must show up.....it showed up, because the law of attraction is always being obedient to your thoughts."
Do I believe that by not thinking about bills, I'll never get any? No...the bills will be there whether I think about them or not. Do I believe that just by thinking about a million dollars, it'll magically appear? No. But I do believe that you do attract positive or negative energy by your thoughts.

I think that if you're a happy, cheerful, optimistic person that you'll tend to attract other happy, cheerful, optimistic people and that you'll tend to attract positive energy. A million dollars? Probably not. A happier, healthier life? Probably.

However, I do believe in the law of attention and the law of intention - you attract more of what you pay attention to and you attract what you are, not what you want. The last paragraph is the law of intention in action...attracting what you are, whether positive or negative.

What about the law of attention? You become more aware of what you pay attention to. If you pay attention to positive or negative things, you tend to be more aware of those things. They've always been there but now you're aware of them. Or how about when you buy a new car and now you see them all over the road? They weren't magically manifested into your life. They were always there but you didn't pay attention to them.

What about positive affirmations? I think that they can be helpful but I think it depends on how they're phrased and how they're used. Kody Bateman, the founder and CEO of SendOutCards, is a huge proponent of  "I am" statements. Your subconscious mind doesn't know the difference between fantasy and reality. Have you ever watched a scary movie? Even though your conscious mind knows it's not real, your subconscious mind takes in all of the scary cues and you're scared! "I am" statements use that idea to become what you want to be. And the power of intention will attract more of that. You still have to work for what you want, the law of intention isn't some magical power, but you'll find that new opportunities will present themselves to you.

What are some "I am" statements?
I am at my ideal weight - Will you magically lose 20 or 30 pounds? No. But your subconscious mind will be looking for ways to make it happen. You may start eating better or exercising more without really noticing it. But if you consciously eat better and exercise more, you'll have even better results.
I am earning $1,000,000 a year - Will you suddenly be earning that much money? I wish! But you will start to notice opportunities to make more money. Will you earn a million dollars a year at your current job? Not likely. But you'll become aware of investment or business opportunities that were already out there but you weren't paying attention to.
I am in a loving relationship - Playboy playmate or Chippendale's dancer suddenly appears? No. But you will most likely become more loving in the process and you attract what you are.
There are a few "rules" to using "I am" statements. They must be in the present tense. Remember, your subconscious doesn't know what's real or not. If you say "I am" your subconscious accepts it as reality and sets out to make it happen. It must be positive...it's "I am", not "I'm not", "I am thin" as opposed to "I'm not overweight". Your subconscious mind doesn't understand "not"...it will just see "I'm overweight" and guess what happens? It's like when you tell yourself "Don't think of a pink elephant". What do you think of? And another key point is repetition. The more you repeat it, the more it becomes ingrained into your subconscious.

You can become what you want if you work for it. You can have what you want as long as it's in alignment with who you are...and you have to work for it. I believe the laws of attention and intention make you aware of opportunities but you still have to take advantage of the opportunities.

Make Every Day a Good Day With This Morning Routine

This post is from The Art of Manliness. I did a similar post a couple of weeks ago, also based on AoM.

From the article:
The tactics we’ll be describing aren’t for generating just any kind of good days, but good work days (even if your work is being a stay-at-home dad or other non-traditional job). In this particular context, a good day is one in which you felt productive and energetic, and like you moved in a direction toward your larger goals.

Why Changing Your Morning Changes the Course of Your Whole Day

Because of confirmation bias, your brain will take your morning experience and look for ways to confirm that experience — either good or bad — for the rest of the day. It can seem a bit dispiriting. Starting your day with a bad commute? Your brain wants to spoil the rest of the day. That spilled coffee on your shirt first thing? Your brain wants to tell you that your clients won’t take you seriously and the whole meeting will be shot.

The other side of confirmation bias is incredibly positive though. Have a good morning, and your brain will not only look past those seemingly negative experiences, but search for ways to confirm this positive a.m. vibe throughout the rest of the day.
How can we set ourselves up for a positive confirmation bias?

The How to Have Good Day Morning Routine

When I first delved into this topic, I was worried that the number of practices tied in to setting yourself up for a good day would be burdensome. Would I need to spend an hour just prepping myself for success? But after practicing and timing this process for a few weeks, I can happily report that the whole routine takes under 10 minutes. You can work through it either before you leave the house each day, or as the first thing you do when you sit down at your desk at work. (If you have a gnarly commute and find your mind starts going downhill before you even arrive at the office, I’d strongly consider making it the former!)
  1. Set Your “Rule of 3”
  2. Set Your Intentions
  3. Plan for fires. Make contingency plans. Ask, “What could get in my way today?”
  4. Do something physical, if you have time.
  5. Set a reward for the end of the day

Happy #TalkLikeAPirateDay!

Avast ye, me hearties! I know ye be wanting to know why September 19th be Talk Like a Pirate Day.

The origin story (and who doesn't like a good origin story?), directly from the official Talk Like a Pirate Day website says:
By the time our hour on the court was over, we realized that lapsing into pirate lingo had made the game more fun and the time pass more quickly. We decided then and there that what the world really needed was a new national holiday, Talk Like A Pirate Day.
First, we needed a date for the holiday. As any guy can tell you, June 6 is the anniversary of World War II’s D-Day. Guys hold dates like that in reverence and awe so there was no way we could use June 6.
Mark came up with September 19. That was and is his ex-wife’s birthday, and the only date he could readily recall that wasn’t taken up with something like Christmas or the Super Bowl or something. We also decided — right then and there on the court on June 6, 1995 — that the perfect spokesman for our new holiday was none other than Dave Barry himself, nationally syndicated humor columnist and winner of the Pulitzer by-God Prize. So, naturally, we forgot all about it.
However, it is with a heavy heart (well, it would be heavy if I had one), that I must inform you that one of the best parts of Talk Like a Pirate Day is no more...no more free donuts at Krispy Kreme! Apparently there are other promotions that they've deemed more important...they should be keelhauled!

More from the website:
But wait! All is not completely lost. Our friends at Long John Silvers (at least they still love us) have upped the ante.
This year they are NOT offering a free piece of fish for those who come in dressed like a pirate. Oh no! They’re offering a bar of gold!
Not gold gold, of course. Don’t be silly. But this Sept. 19 they’re giving away, free, their new Deep Fried Twinkie!
That’s sort of like a bar of gold, if you turn your head a little and squint your eyes.
As much as I'm going to miss my free donuts, Long John Silver's is a much more appropriate choice for celebrating. Although the fact that I dislike seafood may be a bit limiting. But I may have to sample a Deep Fried Twinkie!

And it's still possible to change your language on Facebook to English (Pirate)!

What's Better Than Beach Money?

If you're in network marketing, then you're probably familiar with the book "Beach Money" by Jordan Adler.

But there are a couple of things that you may not know about Beach Money

  • There is a new, expanded edition of Beach Money that will be out in the next few weeks
  • Jordan has a new book coming out in January called "Better Than Beach Money" and it's available for pre-order now!

From Amazon:
What if there was a secret road or a less traveled pathway to your dreams? One that was 100 times shorter and one that required little-to-no struggle? What if this path became ridiculously obvious once someone pointed it out? Sometimes by simply shifting your viewpoint, invisible things will become visible and new opportunities to rapidly reach your dreams will appear. Have you ever noticed that breakthroughs in business are occurring at light speed all around us as a result of entrepreneurs that have chosen to see the world through a different set of lenses? In Better Than Beach Money, Jordan Aldler shares real life stories that will help you to view your life from a different angle. From this new point of view, you will discover roads and pathways, and see opportunities that can cause your dreams to materialize almost instantaneously. You will realize that you don’t have to wait. You can begin to stray from that long, tedious path to achieving your goals and embrace a new way that can take you there much quicker. Most personal development trainers and efficiency experts propose writing down your dreams and taking daily action towards them. Sounds logical; this is a linear and very human process. But our brains don’t exactly work in this way when it comes to attaining our dreams. Our dreams rarely come to us in a linear fashion. Our dreams happen quickly once we meet the right people, shift our perspective and open our minds to the quantum growth opportunities that are all around us. Better than Beach Money can take you there.
I haven't decided yet if I'm going to pre-order the book or wait for it to become available in the SendOutCards gift shop. Even though I'd like to be one of the first to get the book, I'll probably wait to get it through SendOutCards.

Golden eggs #TBT

Today's blog post is from last year:

Today's blog post is a continuation of yesterday's post about finding your ideal customer (or client...see this post about the difference).

My friend, Mark Herdering, wrote a book called "Hanging Out for a Living" and in it he talks about your ideal customer (client) being like a golden egg. When you find a golden egg, you're very happy! But, what if you can figure out where they come from? You want to find the goose that lays the golden egg. In the book, Mark defines the goose as the person (or entity), who by nature of what they do, has a network of your ideal customers.

But what does that mean? Let's take our realtor example from yesterday. Let's say that I'm a realtor and my ideal client is someone who's around my age...someone who is an empty nester and looking to downsize. That person is my golden egg. I can go around and try to meet them on my own. Or I can find the goose, someone who has a network of people who may be looking to downsize their home. So, who would these geese be? They would be people like retirement planners, college financial planners (remember we want people whose last kid has started college), senior centers, etc...people (or entities) that already have my ideal client as one of their clients.

Or in my SendOutCards business, if I decide my ideal client is a realtor, then I will look for people who have realtors as customers...such as mortgage lenders, title agents, real estate attorneys, etc. Hopefully, that gives you an idea of how to find the goose that lays the golden eggs. For a better introduction to the subject, plus a lot more on how to network effectively, read the book. If you liked "The Richest Man in Babylon", you'll love "Hanging Out for a Living". Both books use parables to teach their lessons...personal finance in "Richest Man" and networking in "Hanging Out". But there's more! There's also what Mark calls a "granny goose" but you'll have to read the book to find out more!

Clear your calendars!

Coming up this Saturday are two events that you should be attending!

The first event starts at 10:00 AM. It is a presentation for SendOutCards which allows you to send greeting cards and gifts through the mail from your smartphone, tablet or computer...24/7 from the comfort of your own home, office, coffee shop, car or anywhere you have an Internet connection. This is an easy, inexpensive and effective way to keep in touch with your friends and family, as well as customers and clients. The first hour will show how the system works, various options for getting started and will allow you to send your first card absolutely for free...the card and postage will be covered for your first three cards. The second hour will offer training on how the website and app works, as well as more details on how to get started and the 5 Habits training. If you don't know what that is, it's aimed primarily at SOC distributors, but most of it will apply to anybody in business.

Here's the link for the first event: SendOutCards presentation and training.

There will be donuts and coffee before the event starting at 9:30. There will also be sandwiches and chips starting at 12:00.

The second event we will be playing the MLM Game. This is a board game that allows you to learn and practice your network marketing skills, whether you're an experienced network marketer, a beginner or you just want to find out what it's all about. This is a fun way to introduce your prospects to our industry. There's usually time for two or three games before 4:00, and we sometimes will continue playing even after 4:00.

The link for the second event is: Improve your network marketing skills.

I hope to see you at one or both events this Saturday!

The Best Way To Reheat Pizza

Since October will be Pizza Month, this seemed quite appropriate...unless you always eat all of your pizza the first day!

This is from The Art of Manliness:

Pizza has long been one of man’s best friends. Crispy, cheesy, melty, meaty — it’s a winning proposition all around. One of the beauties of pizza is how well it makes multiple meals. The ginormous 20-inch NY-style pepperoni pizza above (from the stupendous Fat Sully’s here in Denver) provided 5 delicious meals over the course of 4 days. How many other foods can do that for ya?

The real problem (if you can really call it a problem) is figuring out the best way to eat it after Day 1. There are of course those that believe that reheating pizza in any fashion constitutes true sacrilege — that one should always eat their leftovers cold. Certainly, cold pizza can be a delicious and easy option.

But sometimes you want something warm in your belly and wish to bring back the original flavors and get the hot grease flowing again. How should you go about doing so? Do you pop it in the microwave? Throw it on the grill? Luckily for you, we decided to test out the best ways to reheat your pizza. Our findings may surprise you (as they did me), and may in fact lead to a slice of pie that was even better than the original.

In the name of science!

How to Store Your Pizza

Plate. Paper towel. Pizza. Paper towel. Repeat. Cover with plastic. (Forgot to top with a paper towel on this one — woops.)

Your method of reheating is not the only factor in play as to how it will taste the next day(s); how you store your pizza in the fridge also matters. Most folks (including myself, before this article) just throw the box in the fridge and leave it at that. While acceptable, I learned that the best way to store pizza is to line a plate/tupperware with paper towels, then put on a layer of pizza, then cover with paper towels again, then wrap the whole thing in plastic wrap. This ensures ultimate freshness.

Method #1 – Microwave

pizza reheating in microwave

Before writing this article, throwing the ‘za in the microwave was my go-to method of reheating. It’s by far the fastest and most convenient method, and it’s all I ever really knew. So that’s where I started in this experiment. Now, due to some preliminary research, I knew this wasn’t going to be the best method, so I made some adjustments that I knew would make it better. If you’re like me, you always just threw it in the microwave on full power for 30 or so seconds, and came away with a sort of wet, rubbery mess. But it was still pizza, and ultimately, still tasty. Any combination of cheese and meat and bread is going to be good, even if not excellent.

After some asking around, though, I discovered there was a better microwave method. First, keep the paper towel between the plate and the pizza. That will absorb some of the moisture. Then, change your microwave settings to be about 50% power. Instead of 30 seconds, go for a minute. A slow warm up is always better than an instant nuking when it comes to pizza.

The result: Even with improvements to the methodology, the pizza still came out sort of wet and rubbery. Especially when the pizza was really good to start with, microwaving it just doesn’t do it justice. The crust on the end of my slice was so rubbery that I had to really yank on it with my teeth to eat it. The pizza was certainly still edible, but this method is not recommended unless you really only have a minute to reheat it and be on your way. If you must microwave it (say, at the office), have a paper towel handy and lower the microwave power.

Method #2 – Oven

reheating pizza in an oven

Next up was the oven. I had seen a tip in a random forum (yes — there are forums regarding the best ways to reheat pizza) from a man who swore to high heaven to cook the pizza for 5 minutes at 350 degrees. I followed suit, letting the oven preheat all the way before putting it directly on the rack.

The result: The ‘za was warm, crispy, every bit as delicious as Day 1. In fact, it tasted almost exactly the same. For my money, I would have given it either a couple more minutes or a slightly higher temperature, but you can’t go wrong with the oven. No rubber here, folks.

Method #3 – Grill

reheating pizza on the grill

I was pretty excited about trying the grill. My wife makes a mean grilled pizza, so reheating some pie on the grill seemed quite natural. I set it to medium-high and let it warm up for a few minutes. I threw it right on the grate, no oil or anything, and let it cook for 6 minutes or so. I lifted the pizza to make sure the crust looked good (which it did), and made sure the cheese was bubbly on top (it was), and pulled it off to enjoy.

The result: Boy was this method a winner! The cheese was melty, but not rubbery. The pepperoni was crisp. The bottom crust had some awesome grill marks and the perfect amount of char. And the end crust was crunchy and delicious. On a nice day, this method is probably your best bet. The only downside is that while possible to do in poor weather (we are men, after all), it’s not the most convenient or pleasant.

Method #4 – Skillet

reheating pizza on a skillet stove

I chose to do the skillet last because I had read in a few places that this was the best way to reheat pizza. I first put the skillet on the stovetop and let it preheat over medium for a few minutes. I threw the ‘za on and then covered the pan — this is a crucial step. Without covering it, you risk the toppings and cheese not being quite done/hot enough. If your skillet doesn’t have a lid, throw some foil over it. Let it cook for 6-8 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly.

The result: Mamma mia! Delizioso! The skillet pizza was, perhaps, even better than the original. The crust was even crispier, and the pepperoni too. It wasn’t too much different from the grill in terms of taste, but for some reason it seemed a little better. Maybe the ingredients melded together in some magical way that wasn’t present on the grill. We may never know. This method will also be far more convenient than the grill for most people. If you can, this is the way to reheat your pizza. To each their own, of course, but the skillet won out in my book.

I've never tried the last two methods...and I preferred the oven unless I was at work. But I'll have to try the skillet next time!
