Vision #TBT

This is one of a series of posts on vision, mission and GOATS. These are some of my favorite posts. The original post didn't have a link to the seies on GOATS. And you can see in the Interesting days the old style links.

Today I'm going to talk about vision. Not seeing with your eyes, but seeing with your mind.

There are lots of articles about business vision and mission statements, but this article is about personal vision statements, although it can also apply to your small business.

This is part of an ongoing series, last week I talked about goals, objectives, activities, tasks and strategies (GOATS) and this series will continue with

I thought I saw a pyramid that also included activities, tasks and strategies but I'm not able to find it again.

What is a personal vision statement?

A personal vision statement is a short statement, maybe a paragraph or less, that describes where you want to be at some future point. It can describe who you will be as a person, what you want to be doing, with whom and where. It can also be described as a personal growth statement.

You can pick any point in the future…next month, next year, 5 - 10 years down the road. Or as Stephen Covey says in "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People"

What does he mean by "Begin with the end in mind"? Imagine that you're watching your own funeral. Who will be there? What will they say about you? What do you want to have accomplished during your lifetime? How will you be remembered? These are the questions you'll want to answer to prepare your long term vision statement. But long term is relative…if you're in your 20's long term can be 50 years in the future, but if you're in your 50's or 60's long term can be 5 - 10 years.

An end of life vision statement is probably a good thing to have, but I'm going to be writing about something more short to intermediate term, what I call your 2020 Vision. Where do you see yourself in the year 2020, which is just over 5 years away?

Even though the vision statement describes a future time, it is written in the present tense, as if it's happening now. The use of "I am" statements is very powerful.

The Process of the “I AM” – Excerpts from Promptings

“When you create an “I AM” statement, visualize it, and state your compelling “why,” your subconscious mind goes into action delivers exactly what you tell it. You have all heard the saying, “You better be careful what you wish for because you might get it.” It’s amazing how true those words are. When you write these statements, make sure you know what you are saying because that is exactly what you will get. Write your statements, visualize them as best as you can, state your “whys” using all the senses, and keep sending yourself this message over and over.” – Kody Bateman
Here are a couple of tools to help you get started http://www.mentoringgroup.com/personalv1.html and http://www.mentoringgroup.com/personalv2.html. The second includes a sample personal vision statement to give you some ideas.

Here is a rough draft of my personal 2020 vision statement

I am retired from my 35+ year career with AT&T. I'm traveling around the world teaching others about the SendOutCards business opportunity. My job is my vacation so I get to spend time with my friends, wherever they may be in the world because I have the time and financial freedom to visit them. I am loving my happy and fit lifestyle.
This was just off the top of my head…I haven't followed the activities in the links above, so there may be some changes made.

Please feel free to share your 2020 vision statement by leaving a comment below.

Much ado about nothing

I don't really have anything to talk about today, so I'm just winging it.

Many of my friends are in Salt Lake City for the SendOutCards convention. There are supposed to be big announcements today during the Promptings Academy, hopefully I'll find out about them later today.

I've been in Modesto about 6 1/2 months. I just renewed my lease for another year. I'm starting to do some networking in the Modesto area but I missed an event yesterday that I was looking forward to attending. It was the 3rd of 6 parts by Kimmer Sue on branding. But getting up early to attend a lunchtime event is sometimes difficult.

I'm also still attending events in the East Bay...the most recent one was Whiskey and Wealth, which was actually pretty fun. They have another event coming up on October 5th...this time will be Whiskey, Wealth and Wardrobe taking place at a tailor's shop. If you'd like to find out more, let me know.

There is a Salida Chamber Mixer event coming up this Friday, but I have a lunch meeting earlier in the day and I don't think I can do both.

I've also met one on one a few times and have signed up some customers on trial accounts. I need to follow up with them and see if I can upgrade them to subscriptions.

I guess that's it. I've rambled on enough for today.

The Minimal Wardrobe: The Only 3 Pairs of Shoes a Man Needs

This post from The Art of Manliness is very timely since I'm planning on going shopping for new clothes, including shoes, this week. Besides shoes there's also a link to choosing suits, which you can access directly from here. You can also access an article on how to build your wardrobe here.

Last month we gave you a rundown of the differences between the nine major types of men’s dress shoes.

Those with an ample budget, and the sartorial inclination, might consider owning a pair of each kind, so they always have exactly the right shoe for a particular outfit and a particular event.

But what about other fellows who, for either budgetary or philosophical reasons, do not wish to acquire many pairs of shoes, and would rather keep things simple? What’s the minimum number of shoes a man can get by with, while still being able to look sharp and show up dressed appropriately in various situations?

The answer is three. (We’re not counting shoes designed for specialized activities like running shoes or hiking boots — just the shoes you wear on an everyday basis.)

Today we’ll walk you through the characteristics of each pair, and why they form the minimal backbone of a man’s footwear line-up.

Pair #1: Canvas Sneakers

canvas-sneaker-1

We live in an increasingly casual world, and you need a shoe to wear for all your casual outings — going to class, watching the game at friend’s house, running errands, attending a BBQ, etc.

For many men, their casual shoe is a sneaker — an athletic version that doubles as a running shoe, or looks like it might. But it’s stupidly easy to take the casual sneaker up a small notch by replacing it with the canvas variety. You know, All-Stars, SeaVees, PF Flyers. With their long history and solid color scheme, they look more classic and less busy and athletic (even if they once started out as sports sneakers) than the trainers you wear to the gym.

Canvas sneakers will be your go-to casual footwear from spring to fall. In summer, you can easily upgrade your look by skipping the juvenile flip-flops and wearing them (if they’re low tops) with shorts and without socks.

Once colder weather sets in, it’s time to transition to a brown leather boot.

Pair #2: Brown Leather Boots

brown-boots-1

I’m not sure there’s a more versatile piece of footwear than a pair of brown leather boots. In the colder seasons, you can pair them with all your casual clothes, from t-shirts/sweaters/henleys and jeans, to sports coats and khakis. In the warmer months, they get a bit heavy for everyday wear, and you’ll want to swap them out for canvas sneakers when you’re just wearing tees. But they still work for when you need to get a little more dressed up and put on a sports jacket. They’re handsome and handy for pretty much anything short of a suit.

I’ve been incredibly happy with my Wolverine 1,000 Miles, and Chippewa is another renowned brand in this category. Check out Thursday Boots for an upstart whose offerings come in at half the price of the heritage companies.

If you live in the West and have the personality/profession to pull them off, cowboy boots can be substituted in this category.

If you live in a place where it’s warm year round, consider substituting a suede desert boot/chukka, which has the same versatility as a leather boot, but is lighter. They do look a little more casual with a sports coat, however.

Pair #3: Black Leather Dress Shoes

black-oxford-1

For your last pair of shoes, you need something you can wear with a suit on formal occasions — everything from a funeral to a black tie New Year’s Eve party.

The authors of The Indispensable Guide to Classic Men’s Clothing cite John Isaacs, co-owner of the former Barrie Ltd., for some very helpful specifics as to what a man’s one and only pair of formal dress shoes should look like: “black cap-toe with balmoral lacing in a regular-weight leather and a ¼ inch thick leather sole.” If you want to make things even simpler, basically what you need is a pair of black, closed-lacing oxfords. For a top-of-the line example, one can’t beat a pair like this from Allen Edmonds; if you’re on a budget, check out JC Penney, which often has surprisingly decent menswear items.

This kind of oxford will go with the first rung on the suit ladder — a charcoal gray number — which, if you’re dedicated to having a minimal wardrobe, is probably the only rung, and only suit, you’ll ever acquire. They’re also appropriate for wearing with a tuxedo, should you be invited to a swanky affair.

There you have it: the only 3 pairs of shoes a man needs. Of course, when you go minimal, you end up with less flexibility and versatility in your wardrobe — you may find yourself wishing for a boat shoe for some of your summer get-ups, and a pair of wingtip oxfords to sharpen up an outfit of dark denim and a sports coat. But what you trade in versatility you’ll gain in simplicity, money saved, and more room in your closet!

Happy Business Women's Day #TBT

I'm going back to this time last year and celebrating one of the interesting days that falls on today!

A while back I wrote a blog called The Other 70% about women in network marketing. In that post I talked about the fact the 70% of the people in network marketing are women; while only 36% of non-farm, non-publicly held business in 2012 were women owned according to the National Women's Business Council. Why is that? Network marketing costs very little to get started, often less than $1,000. It can be worked around the family's schedule. It offers many goods or services to choose from. It's more low pressure than many other businesses. And it's fun! If you're a woman who wants to join the 70% (or a man who wants to join the 30%), let me know. I know people in various network marketing businesses and maybe we can find one that's right for you.

Holiday cards

"What? It's only September 21st and you're already talking about holiday cards?". Yes. Christmas is only about 3 months away and it'll be here before you know it. I'm not sure of the exact date of Hanukkah, but it's around the same time. But what about Thanksgiving? It's only about 2 months away. And Halloween is just over a month away.

Most people, if they do send out holiday cards, usually send cards for one of the December holidays. If you want to stand out you can send either Halloween and/or Thanksgiving cards.

SendOutCards lets you send out out your holiday cards easily, quickly and inexpensively. You can purchase the cards from the privacy of your own home, anytime day or night; and SendOutCards will print the cards, with your message and/or photos inside, put the card in the envelope, address it, stamp it and take it to the post office...all for $1.64 per card including postage!

Here are some examples of holiday cards in our catalog:

Halloween:

Thanksgiving:

Christmas:

 Hanukkah:

Remember, these cards are printed out on quality, recycled card stock, coated with a UV coating, put in an envelope and mailed. You can send as many, or as few as you'd like...there is no minimum or even maximum order.

Create your holiday list and send a card to everyone on it. You can send the same card to everyone or different cards to some of the people on your list...or a different card to everyone! It's up to you.

And each card is totally customizable. Don't like the message inside? No problem, you can delete it and write one of your own. Want to add pictures to the inside. No problem, you can add as many photos as you'd like. Prefer a holiday card with your family photo on the front? No problem, you can start with a totally blank card and add your photo to the front, with a message if you'd like, and completely customize the inside.

To find out more, email me.

How to use Snapchat in your business

Yesterday was Talk Like a Pirate Day, and as usual Krispy Kreme gave away donuts. One donut if you talked like a pirate, a dozen if you dressed as one. And for the first time this year you could also use a Snapchat filter to get a dozen donuts. So, I figured I'd better download Snapchat so I could celebrate #TalkLikeAPirateDay and I did and I fumbled around enough to figure out how to use filters.

But when I got to Krispy Kreme, I couldn't find the pirate filter. The woman inside said it hadn't been working all day, but I still got a dozen free donuts! After learning more about filters and lenses, I wonder if they meant using a lens? Because filters are very limited geographically...each store would need their own filter...but with a lens, it would be available anywhere. I guess I'll have to wait and see which one they used. Although lenses can cost hundreds of thousand of dollars to produce.

And speaking of free donuts, I don't know how many they gave away but there was a group of 7 people in front of me dressed as pirates and they each received a dozen donuts. They must've given away hundreds of dozens of donuts just while I was there.

Custom geo-filters are pretty inexpensive to make...probably less than $20 depending on how long it's active and how large an area that it covers. Here's an introduction to creating a geo-filter for an event such as a party, reunion, wedding, etc., as well as for a business. And for those of you who are just getting started like me, here's a beginner's guide to using Snapchat.

2,340

That's how many weeks there are between the ages of 22 and 67. The number of weeks between college graduation and being eligible to collect Social Security, if you were born after 1960. And if you don't go to college it could be 2600 weeks or maybe even more. That means you'll be working forty five years to fifty years.

For most Americans you won't have anything to show for all those years of work. There are no more gold watches and very few pensions left. The pension has been replaced by the 401k, relieving the company of having to provide for an employee's retirement and placing the responsibility entirely on the employee.

The difference is that a pension is a defined benefit plan, while a 401k is a defined contribution plan. A pension gives you a specific amount of money to live on paid by the company every month. With a 401k you put a specific amount of money into it every month and if you're lucky you might have something left to live on when you retire...you're entirely at the mercy of the stock market. And with a 401k you have to start taking out a minimum distribution at age 70 1/2. The amount of the distribution is based on your life expectancy (plus your spouse's if your spouse is the beneficiary). Right now, the tables require that the 401k account be drained in 27.4 years if you're age 70 since the IRS wants all of the tax money that they allowed you to defer before you die. But since most Americans have little to nothing in their 401k, they will probably take more than the required amount.

And while you're working, you'll probably not have enough money to live on even if both spouses are working. Forty five to fifty years of struggle followed by 20 - 30 more years of struggle after retirement.

What are the options for retirement?

  1. 401k, 403b, etc - They all have similar requirements for minimum distributions
  2. Pension - if you're lucky enough to get one
  3. Social Security - if there's anything left by the time you retire
  4. Continue working - which is what many people will have to do whether they want to or not
  5. Start your own business - preferably one that will pay you a residual income, so that you'll continue getting paid when you quit working

I can help you with #5. SendOutCards is a fun business to work because our product not only makes the person using it feel good but also the person receiving the card and/or gift will feel good. And SOC provides a residual income, a potentially substantial one, that will continue paying for the rest of your life and possibly even beyond. I don't know the requirements of passing your business down to future generations but I know it's possible. Click here to find out more...scroll down to the bottom of the page and watch the Own Your Own Business video. Then click on the 3 horizontal bars in the upper right corner and select Send a Free Card to try it out on me. Click yes to watch the automated walk through.

SendOutCards Convention Recap #TBT

This time last year the SendOutCards Convention was in Disneyland. This year it will be in Salt Lake City at the end of the month. I won't be going this year.

I had a great time at convention! It was held at the Disneyland Hotel. I arrived Tuesday afternoon and checked into the Baymont Inn and Suites about 4 miles from Disneyland. It was kind of a pain being so far away, but it was much cheaper than staying at Disneyland.

On Wednesday was the Bootcamp...all about building your business. At the beginning of the bootcamp all of the new changes were announced. Some of the big announcements were the MRM Training Portal and the Gold and Silver Customer Packages.

The MRM Training Portal is the online version of the Mastering Relationship Marketing 2 day live seminar that was presented earlier this year but is now available online. The cost is $99 with a $49 annual renewal. There will be more modules added to it as time goes on.

The Silver Package includes a 1 year subscription to the MRM Portal, the Handwriting Font and Signatures Package (a $49 value), the Custom Brand Manager (a $149 value...also with a $49 annual renewal), and 200 points (a $62 value)...all for $345. But the best thing is that you can buy points at the wholesale price of 31 cents each...if you have a subscription of at least 100 points.

The Gold Package is similar except it also includes the Memory Vault (a $99 value), which is for additional storage for cards, photos and contacts; as well as an additional 300 points (a $93 value) for a total of 500 points...all for $450.

There were similar additions to the Marketing Distributor package but the biggest change is the immediate payout of the bonuses.

Thursday was a free day that I spent at the Disneyland Park.

Friday morning was mostly announcements and two of the biggest for me was the Rookie of the Year, Cathi Rickly out of Las Vegas and the Distributor of the Year, Casey Eberhart, out of LA. Casey will be speaking at the Laptop Lounge in Walnut Creek on September 29th. Friday afternoon was free time again spent in the park.

Saturday was more on the new packages as well as some testimonials and business building. There was a closing party that I didn't attend because I drove home right after the main convention session.

A few UPDATES: The Gold and Silver packages are gone and have been replaced by the Personal, Marketing and Business Bundles at $195, $395 and $795 respectively. Ask me for more info on the bundles. And it now only costs $50 to become a distributor! There won't be a Bootcamp at convention but there will be a Promptings Academy.
