Is "Fake it 'til you make it" a valid strategy?

I've seen pros and cons of the idea of faking it until you make it, but I think it depends on the reason you're doing it. In the con example, the author was using external signs, such as an expensive house and car, to show that she had already made it while in the pro example you're using actions to support your hoped for internal confidence. The difference between "keeping up with (or surpassing) the Joneses" or building your self-confidence.

Faking it until you make it is more about doing something that you're afraid to do but acting as though you're not afraid, than it is an attempt at being deceitful which is what many people believe. Here is a video from The Art of Manliness about it:

Here Brett McKay talks about how to feel like a man and that you can't feel like a man until you start to act like a man.

And here's a quote from the article:
But the problem with conventional wisdom on how a person “becomes” is that it doesn’t work. At least not very well. Nine times out of ten you won’t magically start feeling like a man by simply thinking about becoming a man. So how can you start feeling like the man you’ve always wanted to be? By following the advice given by both ancient philosophers and modern psychologists: to feel like a man, you have to act like a man.
Also:
Modern psychologists have a theory on why acting-to-become is such an effective way of changing who you are and how you feel about yourself: cognitive dissonance. When there’s a conflict between your self-perception and how you’re actually behaving, you experience dissonance or tension, and your brain moves to close the gap by shifting how you feel about yourself to match how you’re acting.
So, to become a man you must act like a man; and to be a success you have to act like a success...this doesn't mean to go out and buy expensive things but to change the ways you act towards success and to especially watch the words you use, such as "I choose not to spend my money on that", instead of "I can't afford it". "Dress for Success" is a valid tactic, you can do it and still remain within your budget.

This also ties in with "I am" statements. You tell yourself that you already are what you're trying to achieve. The brain doesn't know the difference between what is real and what you tell it. It also doesn't understand not, such as "Do not think of an elephant". The "I am" statement is related to cognitive dissonance discussed above. If you tell yourself something over and over, your brain will believe it and will do what it can to make it true.

To build a proper I am statement, it must be something that is possible and it must be positive. "I am not fat" doesn't work because the brain doesn't understand "not", it just sees "I am fat". A better choice is "I am at my ideal weight" and you start acting like it by eating better and exercising...the things a person at their ideal weight would do to keep at that weight.

So, whatever it is that you want to be, go ahead and act like you're already there. Your brain will do what it can to bring how you act and what you think in alignment, But you have to deeply believe that it's already true. You can't just go through the motions...you really have to believe that you're already the kind of person that you want to be. And you need to do the sort of things that sort of person does.

Don't ignore your promptings

What is a prompting? It's that little voice in your head that says you should do something.

In his book "Promptings", Kody Bateman, the founder and CEO of SendOutCards, talks all about promptings. And he also talked about promptings at the Promptings Academy this past weekend in Las Vegas. The Promptings Academy is the live seminar version of the book and I highly recommend it.

I didn't go to the one this past weekend in Vegas. I did go to the last one there back in July and I've got my sights set on the SOC at Sea event coming up at the end of April.

Kody opened with the story of how an ignored prompting led to the creation of SendOutCards. I wish I could share the video with you but it's in a private Facebook group for distributors.

A big part of the seminar is based on the 5 Habits. I wrote a blog about the 5 habits and you can read it here.

Starting this Saturday, February 18th at 9:00 AM, I'm going to be offering 5 Habits training every week. It'll be starting at my apartment in Modesto but I hope to move it to a different location as the meetings grow. If you're interested in attending, just send me an email and I'll send you the address.

Monday - "How Millennials Could Be the Next Greatest Generation of Personal Finance" Another look at millennials by The Art of Manliness. This ties in with the blog post I did based on the Archetype Generations and that the millennials are the next Hero generation. Is it true that "Millennials are lazy, entitled narcissists who have brought their problems on themselves by not being ambitious, hard-working, and independent enough."?

Tuesday - "Know your limits" Most of the limits we have on our abilities are the ones we've imposed on ourselves. "We need to examine our "reality" since our senses, internal and external, don't really perceive things as they actually are."

Wednesday - "I had a Super Saturday! How about you?" About the SendOutCards Super Saturday in Los Angeles. "Overall, it was an awesome event...although it was much better in person! If you'd like to see Darla in person in Modesto, let me know...I'm hopefully starting the Super Saturdays in the next month or two. After we get going, I'll invite some of the leaders in the company such as Darla, Bruce, Casey and Jordan Adler, the author of Beach Money, who is in my upline!"

Thursday - "So how do you make a decision? #TBT" A throwback to last year about things you can do to make your decision making easier. "Making decisions is hard and exhausting work. As an entrepreneur you make hundreds of choices each day that you are solely responsible for. It can sap all of your strength and willpower to think through each one and weigh the pros/cons. Why not learn to make it a little easier on yourself?"

So how do you make a decision? #TBT

Today we're going back in time to February 9th of last year:

This is a followup to yesterday's post about willpower and how to avoid decision fatigue. This post is from my SendOutCards blog. Check it out and sign up for my email list so you can get these delivered to your inbox twice a month.

Making decisions is hard and exhausting work. As an entrepreneur you make hundreds of choices each day that you are solely responsible for. It can sap all of your strength and willpower to think through each one and weigh the pros/cons. Why not learn to make it a little easier on yourself? Here are a few ways:
time to decide concept clock closeup on white background with red and black words
Avoid too much information. More is always better right? Not always. You can’t predict the future no matter how much information you have. When you begin to focus on too much data collection and information to weigh your decisions, you will begin to place extra value on that information. Instead give yourself a timeline to do your research, weigh it out and then decide what you are going to do. Remember you can always change your mind and go back if it didn’t work. Don’t keep looking for more information or reasons to waffle.
Ask for a second opinion. Be willing to talk decisions over with a mentor or friend who can provide a second opinion. You can miss out on different perspectives and attitudes that could influence your decision making when you only take your own opinion into account.
Set a timeline for small decisions. Big decisions require research, planning and preparation, but as a business owner you are responsible for all the daily small decisions. Agonizing over trivial matters will only increase your stress level and harm your productivity. Instead give yourself a time limit for making small decisions and then just follow through. If it doesn’t work, then make a different choice and try that out. For small matters you have the flexibility for trial and error – and you can use that to your advantage.
The way we make decisions is very personal, but understanding how to prioritize and seek new perspectives can make it a little easier. Learn to make choices and your life will seem a lot easier!

Casey Eberhart~~
Executive with SendOutCards
2015 Global Distributor of the Year

Okay...what does all of this mean? Who or what is a SOCster? That's what Casey calls SendOutCards distributors.

Basically a Super Saturday is a SOC opportunity meeting with some training. I'm going to start offering Super Saturdays in the Modesto area soon.

Casey wasn't able to make it on Saturday because he was the emcee and speaker at another event in Vegas, but he left us in the very capable hands of Bruce Waterman, the 2016 Volunteer of the Year...Bruce is everywhere where SOC is involved. Bruce's SendOutCards business has really taken off. Find out why as he does the opportunity presentation:

(That's me on the far right, directly in front of the white board).

The sound can be a little difficult to hear, but it's worth the effort!

This second video is of Darla DiGrandi, the 2016 Recruiter of the Year. Listen as she tells her rags to riches to rags to riches story and find out how she made $10,000 in her first month with SendOutCards. I first heard Darla in January of last year down in San Diego and I've heard her several times since and I never get tired of hearing her stories and learning from her!

Overall, it was an awesome event...although it was much better in person! If you'd like to see Darla in person in Modesto, let me know...I'm hopefully starting the Super Saturdays in the next month or two. After we get going, I'll invite some of the leaders in the company such as Darla, Bruce, Casey and Jordan Adler, the author of Beach Money, who is in my upline!

And I'd especially like to thank Kelly Pangilinan for driving all the way to LA with me to find out more of what SendOutCards is all about.
