Relationship Marketing: Three Powerful Principles

I'm going to Bobbette Grasty's "Relationship Marketing: Three Powerful Principles" event in Fremont this afternoon. If you want to find out how to easily get new customers and keep your existing ones, you need to go to this free event!

I'm not going to post anything new about relationship marketing until after I attend this event, instead I'm going to share my SendOutCards blog post for this month.

What is important on Mother’s Day

Mothers with children in flower field“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” ~Washington Irving
One might wonder if anyone anticipated the importance the day would gain when Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day an official day of celebration in the United States in 1914. The official Mother’s Day as most people know it originated with Anna Jarvis to recognize the sacrifices of her mother and all other mothers. But a day honoring mothers is not unique to the United States.
Around the world, a day to honor mothers typically falls between March and May. However, each month at least one country observes a day for mothers. And many of these celebrations have a long history. In the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe, a similar day was the Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” In some places it eventually merged with the American Mother’s Day celebrated in May, but in others it is still celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In Thailand Mother’s Day is now celebrated in August. In Ethiopia families gather in the fall for Antrosht, a multi-day celebration honoring motherhood.
No matter when or how it is celebrated, what is important about this day is its purpose: to recognize the caring, nurturing, supportive, sacrificial love of mothers. As you celebrate Mother’s Day this year, remember that it is a day not only to honor your own mother but also to honor any woman who has exemplified those wonderful qualities of a mother in your life.

The 3 relationships you must master in your business

There are 3 relationships that you must master if you want to succeed in your business:

  1. The relationship with yourself
  2. The relationship with others
  3. The relationship with your business

Here is an excerpt from SendOutCards CEO, Kody Bateman, from his Master Relationship Marketing website:

Becoming a MASTER at RELATIONSHIP MARKETING is about focusing on the first word, RELATIONSHIP, over the second word, MARKETING.
It’s about mastering relationships in 3-core areas: Relationships with your SELF, Relationships that are PERSONAL and Relationships in BUSINESS.
You simply find out who you ARE (relationship with yourself) and then give yourself AWAY (in your personal and business relationships). Treat others, in all walks of life, the way you would want to be treated. Be giving, caring, humble, especially to people who cannot currently offer you anything in return.
Personal and business relationships are more important today than ever before. We are at the pinnacle of the information age. With the Internet, search engines and social media platforms, people find out about you, personally, and about your business before you have the chance to make your first impression.
So, today, the better you are at MASTERING RELATIONSHIPS, the better you will be at thriving in your personal and business life. Why? Because, today more than anytime in history, people don’t care how much you know because they can research anything online. You separate yourself, personally and in business, by showing people how much you care.
So how do you MASTER this?
You MASTER it by creating new habits and those habits start with the little things and work their way up to the big things.
Here is an escalation list of habits you need to form in order to MASTER RELATIONSHIPS:
SELF
  • Nourish yourself with positivity every day.
  • Read positive books.
  • Listen to positive tapes.
  • Never go to bed after watching the news.
  • Go to bed after reading or listening to something positive.
  • Keep a journal.
  • Know your WHY, write I AM statements and set specific goals.
(Remember, you are finding out who you are so you can give yourself away)
PERSONAL
  • Always smile at others, everywhere you go.
  • Say hello to people and express positive greetings.
  • Open doors, give people the parking space and let people in traffic.
  • Always be pleasant, you never know who you are talking too.
  • Say please and thank you.
  • Listen more than you speak.
  • Be nice to people.
  • Celebrate people with pictures, gifts and your written words.
  • Share compliments and appreciation daily.
BUSINESS
  • Make a list of everyone you know and put them in a contact manager.
  • Categorize your list into 3 categories: 1) contacts 2) prospects 3) customers
  • Always add people to your list and move them through the 3 categories.
  • Take detailed notes on all of your contacts.
  • Reach out in the spirit of RELATIONSHIP 80% of the time and in the spirit of MARKETING 20% of the time.
  • Build your personal brand with friendship, celebration and service.
  • Use the 4 methods of communication to reach out regularly to your lists. The 4 methods are TEXT, CALL, GREETING CARDS, and ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION.
  • Always be in the spirit of service. GIVE for the sake of GIVING and you will attract what you GIVE.
  • Listen more than you speak and always make it about them and how you can help them.
It is not enough to know and memorize this list. It’s not enough to implement this list. You need to make this a list of habits. It takes time, patience and commitment to become a MASTER at anything. If you make these things your daily habits and have a system you can use to keep you on track, you will MASTER relationship marketing and set yourself apart from others.
Best wishes,
Kody B

There will only be interesting days tomorrow and Thursday. I'm planning on continuing this series on relationship marketing on Friday.

For a review of previous articles in this series, see this blog post from last Thursday.

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/oyster-day/ Are oysters an aphrodisiac? Even though it's difficult to follow that last question, it's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ferret-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cartoonists-day/

Tomorrow - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/no-diet-day/ and two school related days: https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/no-homework-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/school-nurse-day/ When I was in elementary school I think I spent more time in the nurse's office than I did in class…not that I was really sick, just that I didn't want to be in school

This one reminds me of my dad, he seemed to like this one:

And last, but far from least, it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/nutty-fudge-day/ One of my favorites. And here's a recipe for those of you who'd like to make your own.

This town was once booming

Some of you may remember the pictures of the park I posted on Saturday, if not here's the link.

At one time there was a town on Pt. Pinole called Giant. It was the company town for the Giant Powder Company, the first company to produce dynamite in the United States under direct license of Alfred Nobel.

Until 1869 the Giant Powder Company was located in Glen Canyon in San Francisco, near the Glen Park and Diamond Heights neighborhoods. Giant Powder only operated there for about a year before an explosion destroyed the factory. They then moved to an area in what is now part of the Sunset District of San Francisco that was then just desolate sand dunes. Giant Powder stayed in this area for 9 years until another explosion destroyed the factory. They then moved across the bay to Berkeley, in an area known as Fleming Point, where the Golden Gate Fields Racetrack is now located.

But after a few more explosions they moved to an even more remote area known as Point Pinole, near Richmond, in 1892, where they stayed until 1960. However, they were acquired by the Atlas Powder Company in 1915.

The DuPont Company was one of the largest explosives manufacturers in the world, but in 1912 the courts ordered DuPont to divest itself of its explosives division and two new companies were formed, the Hercules Powder company, which also had its own company town on San Francisco Bay, and Atlas Powder Company. However, by 1960 the Giant plant was closed and the town died with it. The site is now part of the Pt. Pinole Regional Shoreline.

Saturday in the park

I think it was the 2nd of May. Actually, I went to the park yesterday. Just for a few minutes. I hadn't been there before so I wanted to check it out. There's quite an interesting history that I'm going to share with you next week, but until then here are a few pictures.

Thank you

No blog post on relationship marketing today. I just want to take a minute to thank you for taking the time to read what I have to say. I know there are a couple of you that have read this from the beginning and you'll never know how much that has meant to me. It's what has kept me going for the past 8 1/2 months.

I don't want this to only be about me, I want to write about the things you want to read about. A couple of you have given me some ideas. Thank you Shauna Napier and Anne Landefeld! And thanks to Elizabeth Walker for winning some brownies in my 200th blog post contest. I haven't forgotten about your favorite post…I haven't had a chance to make the field trip.

Please take a minute to leave a comment here or on the FB post about the blog. I'd love to know who reads this. What you like or don't like. What you'd like to see me write about. And whether you'd like to write a guest blog post.

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Interesting days

May is https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/get-caught-reading-month/ You can catch me most months! It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hamburger-month/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/barbecue-month/ There's nothing like burgers, brats and dogs cooking on the grill (No, not those brats and dogs, but I know the feeling!). And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/photo-month/ Since nearly everyone has a camera in the palm of their hand, I think it's pretty much always Photo Month

In case you're wondering, her name is Tuba (And no, I won't go there!)

Next Friday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/iris-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/military-spouse-appreciation-day/. My kids were 8 & 4 when I went away for 6 months of training with the California Air National Guard. I know it was hard on her. I can't imagine what it's like for the wives or husbands of those who are deployed for longer periods of time and/or in combat situations. First we have No Pants Day and now, just one short week later, we have https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/no-socks-day/

I forgot to include May 31 yesterday, so here it is: https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/save-your-hearing-day/https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/no-tobacco-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/macaroon-day/ How about a nice, quiet walk in the park with some nice, homemade macaroons and without the cigarettes? And to help you out, here's a recipe for macaroons (if you need a taste tester, let me know!). http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/coconut-macaroons-recipe3.html

June 1 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/go-barefoot-day/ I think I'm starting to see a theme developing here. What's next? It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/thank-god-its-monday-day/ Really? And what about https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/say-something-nice-day/
