The words in the left column are the words that I picked to describe myself and the words in the top row are the words used by the others to describe me. The idea is share yourself with others and to learn how others view you.

The Arena pane shows agreement between your self image and your public image. The Blind  Spot are those characteristics that others see in you that you may not see in yourself…and yes, there were a few that surprised me. The Facade pane shows those characteristics that you hide from others. And the Unknown pane is simply the words that weren't chosen by anybody.

So, now my Facade is open to the public and I'm now aware of my Blind Spot and I can use this knowledge to grow as a person.

The reason I didn't do this yesterday is because I was taking a class to help me overcome my shyness. It's called "Acting With Confidence" created by my friend Bonnie Lafer. I had planned on doing a different blog post today, but while watching Season 8, Episode 2 of "Psych" I was inspired by 2 things in that episode to work on this one instead. What were those two things? First, I spotted the pineapple (which I haven't done in a long time) and second, the bad guy was killing off

A-Holes



I don't think there is any way that you can underestimate the power of a team, whether it's the friends in your personal life or the members of the team in your professional life.

I'm sure that you've all heard the saying "Together Everyone Achieves More" and I personally think it's true, which is one of the things I like about network marketing. Sure, there are a few a-holes in the industry but I find that almost everyone that I talk to feels that it's better to work together as a team by helping others within their company, or even across other companies, in any way they can. Whether it's company specific, or generic, training; reaching out a helping hand or maybe even just buying products or services from another network marketer, network marketing is a team sport.

An often repeated statement about network marketing is "You're in business for yourself, not by yourself". Yes, you own your own business, but the company, its leaders and the rest of the people in the business all succeed when everyone succeeds, which is just the opposite of what most people are used to in the corporate world.

So, you can be an a-hole or you can achieve more...I don't think you can successfully do both.

This is a continuation from something I posted on Facebook a couple of days ago.

Unfortunately my post was imported from Twitter and part of my comment was cut off. It should've said "I think this is an interesting article. Whether you like it or not, your success at work, in business or in life requires networking."

 Here's the link to the original article on LinkedIn. 

 One of the comments posted after the article talked about how the economy would fail if everybody spent 90% of the time marketing and creating their brand and only 10% of the time working. However, I felt that he missed the point. If you're happy where you are in your job or business, you don't need to change anything. But if you want to advance at your job or grow your business, then you better be more strategic as to how you go about it.

 Suppose that you have a job, but you feel it's time to move up to the next level. What do you do? According to the article, you should divide your effort between networking, building your personal brand and work. 

 Let's say that you decide to spend an extra 10 hours a week doing things to advance your career. 

 Hang out with your boss and his or her boss for 6 of those hours. Do things to help them with their work. Make your usefulness visible. But don't hang out with them just at the office, but go to the Friday afternoon after work "meeting" at the local pub, go to public events that they attend. Become a recognizable face in their world. However, I'm not recommending that you stalk them.

 Spend the next 3 hours developing the look and feel that will allow you to fit in with your proposed peers. If you look and act like them, they'll be more comfortable with you as a peer. You don't have to copy them, but if they all wear Dockers and Polo shirts and you always wear jeans and a t-shirt, they won't see you as one of them.

 And for your final hour you can do the additional work that shows that you're willing to go above and beyond.

 Now suppose that you have a business, whether network marketing/direct sales or something a little more conventional. If you want to grow your business, you again need to put in the extra time and effort that it takes to grow it.

 If you're working at a full time job and running a business on the side, or working your business full time, you need to network, brand and work.

 You decide you're able to put in 20 hours per week to grow you business. How are you going to spend your time?

 You need to spend about 12 hours a week going where your prospective clients/customers are, whether it's at a chamber mixer, a BNI or Successful Thinkers meeting, or a 1:1 meeting with a prospect - you need to get out and meet them.

 Next, spend about 6 hours a week developing your personal brand. Are you going to be Walmart or Nordstrom? Also, you again want to make your customers feel at ease around you. If your prospects are CPAs, you don't want to dress like an auto mechanic or vice versa. Next week, I'll be writing more about branding yourself.

 And the last 2 hours you can spend doing paperwork or self-motivation.

 So remember…60% networking, 30% personal branding and only 10% doing additional work.

Network Marketing


Only two words, but most people (including me), have it all backwards. I've heard this before but it's finally starting to sink in. Network marketing is not about marketing your stuff to the people in your network, it's about getting the people in your network to market your stuff to their network.

I think I've heard that the average person has 200 contacts in their phone. Or is it 200 Facebook friends? Doesn't really matter, so let's say that your network consists of 200 people. If you try to sell your stuff to them, if you're lucky maybe 10% (20 people) may buy from you. But if your 200 friends market to their 200 friends, we're now talking about 40,000 people hearing about your product or service. If 10% of those people are interested, you've now got 4,000 customers.

But how do you get your friends to market for you? One way is to post stuff on FB that's worthy of being liked, shared or commented on. Another way is to train them on what to tell their friends. Here's an excellent podcast from Dr. Ivan Misner, the founder of BNI (Business Networking International) on the subject.

And LinkedIn is really built on the idea of reaching your 2nd degree connections, that is the people who are connected to your connections. Here's an article on how to reach out to them. According to LinkedIn, I have 319 1st degree connections, but 201,712 2nd degree connections. That's an average of  just over 632 connections per person.

And there is also the theory that weak ties can be more influential than strong ties, because your strong ties tend to be more like you, therefore they already tend to know the same people you do and they know about the same things, such as job openings, as you do. However, the people that they know that are outside of your group, your weak ties, will likely have other interests or needs than your close group of friends.

LinkedIn will also list your 3rd degree connections (I know a guy who knows a guy). These are very weak ties but you may still have some influence over them according to this article.

So, quit trying to sell to your friends! Instead, let them sell for you to their friends.
