Could Time-Blocking Replace Your To-Do List? #TBT

Today's blog post was originally published last year:

Today's blog post is based on an article on get pocket.com.
A few years ago, my to-do list was an endless source of frustration. At the end of every day, it seemed like it had more items on it than when I started. I never seemed to get it all done.
So, in an effort to understand what was going on, I began to track how I was spending my time and saw some interesting patterns emerge. As I learned more, I started applying a productivity-changing principle to my daily “get it done” list: time-blocking.
All that is interesting, but what is time-blocking?
Time-blocking is essentially organizing your day in a series of time slots. Instead of writing a list of tasks that take as long as they take, with a time-blocked approach, each of these time periods is devoted to a task or tasks. It immediately lets you see where you’re being unrealistic about your time and keep yourself focused on what you’re supposed to be doing.
If I can remember that far back, The 12 Week Year featured time-blocking.
Giving every hour a job typically lets you make much more efficient use of your time, says Georgetown University professor Cal Newport, author of Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World. “This follows because it allows you to schedule work for the time where it makes the most sense—batching together small things, tackling hard things when you have the long stretches to make progress, and so on. The other advantage is that it provides you more accurate feedback on how much free time you actually have most days and how long certain recurring tasks actually take,” he says.
 Why should we time-block?
Organizing your day through time blocks instead of to-dos makes sense because of the discipline and order it applies to your tasks, says time management expert Kevin Kruse, author of 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management. Research by productivity blog I Done This found that 41% of to-do list items are never completed. In Kruse’s own research he says the high-performers he interviewed never talked about their “to-do lists,” but instead talked about their calendars and how they were organized.
I've written about using your calendar instead of a to-do list here.
Organizing your time instead of your tasks also has psychological benefits, Kruse says. There is also a psychological reason why time-blocking makes more sense. In what is known as the Zeigarnik effect, which basically states that we remember what we haven’t done better than what we have done, and uncompleted tasks weigh on us. “This can lead to stress and insomnia. However, when we have all of our tasks placed into a specific date, time, and duration, we sleep more soundly knowing everything that needs to get done is in its place,” Kruse says.
So, if you’re ready to give it a shot, pull out your calendar and keep these tips in mind.
  • Pay Attention to Cycles
  • Allot Enough Time
  • Offload Distractions
  • Make It Flexible
Be sure to read the article, to find out more about these tips.

I don't really have much to talk about today

I don't really have much to talk about today. I have an idea that I'm researching but it's not quite ready for prime time.

That idea is based on a comment during the Prompting U Talks yesterday...you can check it out here.

I actually missed the first part of this, so I watched it now (2:00 AM). Well, I tried to watch it. The first person (the one I missed when it was live) was about how to be on camera, but of the three people that I watched, he was the only person that I didn't think was interesting. I may go back and finish watching but I can't see myself watching a course that features him talking!

The other two courses sound interesting, so I'll probably sign up for those since I have unlimited access to all courses for a year!

But I do need to do some more research into what Peter Anthony said, so possibly next week I'll have a blog post about "Would you rather be rich or thin?".

That's pretty much it...check out the video. You may like the first speaker but if not, hang out for the other two. You won't be disappointed.

One Man’s Impossible Quest — To Make Friends in Adulthood

Today's blog post is based on a podcast from The Art of Manliness:

Several years ago, there was a tweet that went viral which said that of Jesus’ many miracles, perhaps his greatest, was having 12 close friends in his 30s.

As people say, it’s funny, because it’s true.

When my guest today came face-to-face with the anemic state of his own friendships, he set out to try to do the miraculous himself, and make friends in middle-age. His name is Billy Baker and he’s a journalist and the author of We Need to Hang Out: A Memoir of Making Friends. Billy and I begin our conversation with the problem of male loneliness in the modern age, and how it befell him in his own life. We then discuss how men and women do friendships differently, the way men do theirs shoulder to shoulder, what this means for what male friendships need to be built around, and why they require what he calls “velvet hooks.” Billy shares how he started his project, which experimented with different ways to recover and create connections, by rekindling his old friendships, but why that ultimately didn’t scratch the friendship itch for him. Billy then describes what did: a kind of casual fraternity for middle-aged men he started, and how it was inspired by something called the “men’s shed” movement in Australia and its philosophy that men need “somewhere to go, something to do, and someone to talk to.” We end our conversation with Billy’s takeaways for making friends in adulthood, including the need for embracing intentionality and social risk.

Here are the highlights from the program:

  • Why are men so susceptible to loneliness?
  • What are the health consequences of loneliness?
  • Face to face versus shoulder to shoulder
  • What are “velvet hooks”?
  • Why re-kindling past friendships didn’t fully scratch the friendship itch
  • Why the Men’s Shed Movement inspired Billy to make some actual friends
  • How COVID managed to strengthen friendships
  • The pressure of trying to be friends with both halves of a couple
  • What’s the actionable takeaway here for guys?

I think that's why bars are so popular with men...sitting shoulder to shoulder while participating in an activity (drinking), where laughing and joking comes fairly easily.

The last time I really made new friends that I hung out with was when I first started working at AT&T. There were several of us in the same age bracket amongst many people who were older, so we hung out quite a bit (a lot of it at bars!).

That's also part of the reason I got started with SendOutCards...I wanted to build some new friendships. And I have in many ways, but there hasn't been the weekly type of just hanging out. That's why I do my Saturday morning trainings...we can hang out, shoulder to shoulder, and engage in the activity of learning how to grow our businesses. It's also part of the reason I joined Gold Star...except we've been meeting virtually for the last 14 months.

In the podcast, they talk about John Mulaney hosting Saturday Night Live. I found the video they were talking about...interestingly it was that weekend that we were talking about it being a Leap Year, Daylight Savings Time was starting and it was a full moon...remember that weekend? That's the power of our thoughts being manifested! (Plus the standing brooms didn't help!).

Anyway, check out the podcast and then watch John Mulaney back when we were all young and innocent!

How to sign up almost everyone you show it to

Today's blog post is from a Zoom that Jordan Adler did last Monday. Even though this Zoom was aimed at Greener Still customers and/or affiliates, most of it can be used with any other network marketing business and much of it could even be used in a traditional business,

Jordan talked about syntax or pattern...the order of doing things, such as dialing the correct digits in the correct order...or adding the ingredients in the correct order when you bake a cake.

Jordan then talks about the seven steps to his pattern for sharing your business opportunity:

  1. Only show it to people who are interested in seeing it
    1. Build rapport
    2. Ask questions
    3. Ask for permission to continue
  2. Send a card before and/or after (possibly with  gift)
    1. Be genuine
    2. Use photos from social media
    3. Give compliments
  3. Ask permission to send the Greener Still 9 minute video (or your company's video)
    1. Ask them to let you know when they have watched it and find out on a scale of 1 - 10 where is their level of interest
  4. Set up a Zoom with them to review the Greener Still services (or your company's services)
  5. Demo the service
    1. Send them a card while they watch you
    2. Have then send a card
  6. Explain the $14 affiliate option
    1. Share the duplication plan videos
  7. Explain the different accounts
Not everything can be applied to all businesses, but just because you're not with SendOutCards/Greener Still doesn't mean that you can't use number 2.

So, let's set up a Zoom meeting and show me what you have and I'll show you Greener Still. Greener Still is designed to be a suite of tools to help you build your business, no matter what that business may be,

How to Make Your Haircut Last Longer #TBT

Today's blog post was originally published two years ago and is even more relevant now than it was then:

Today's blog post is based on an article from The Art of Manliness:

This is timely for me since Alisa Lopez, the only person who's cut my hair over the last three years is going out on maternity leave soon, although I don't know exactly when or for how long...but the tips in this article should help.

Depending on the growth rate of his hair and the style he keeps it in, a man’s got to visit his barber every 2-6 weeks to keep his haircut sharp. While visiting a barbershop can be a relaxing ritual, in our busy lives, it more often feels like an inconvenience, and a significant expense. You thus may naturally desire to extend the life of your haircut and the amount of time you can let lapse between appointments with your barber.
While you obviously can’t slow down how fast your hair grows, there are ways to make your visits to the barber less frequent, without your hair looking untidy and out of hand. Accomplishing this concerns either choosing a more barber-independent hairstyle, or creating an at-home maintenance routine that allows you to delay your visits to the barbershop.

I'm sure Alisa wishes I came in that often! It's usually more like 6-8 weeks for me as it is.

After you’ve gotten your hair cut, your hair will begin to grow out most noticeably in the trails that run down your neck from either side of your hairline and in your sideburns. Extending the life of your haircut is then just a simple matter of cleaning up these problem areas. Here’s how to do it:

1. Get a sharp haircut.
2. Gather the needed tools.
3. Trim your sideburns.
4. Trim your neckline.
5. Keep your hair smooth and styled.
Following this DIY maintenance routine can let you go as much as 2 weeks more before you have to get a real haircut, reducing your visits to the barber by a third to a half.

The nice thing about Sport Clips is that they'll clean up your neck and sideburns for you between haircuts, free of charge, which makes for a good excuse to get another MVP!

If you live in Modesto, Turlock, Fresno or Clovis, be sure to visit the Sport Clips shops owned by Matt Kneeland in Turlock, Fresno and Clovis. Be sure to tell them I sent you...you'll get nothing special and they'll probably look at you strangely, but go ahead and do it anyhow.

I don't think Alisa went back to work after baby Edwin was born, but I never went back to that Sport Clips...mainly because Matt never reached out to me via any kind of relationship marketing campaign. There is another Sport Clips that is much closer to me, although I'm on my second stylist there. Kika left not too long after the pandemic started...I did see her once after they reopened but she went back to school to pursue another career, so now I'm seeing Erica.

Even though I have the tools to trim my hair, I hadn't;t been doing it...just going to get my haircut every four months (although I'm sure there are still a few of you who haven't had a haircut in over a year!). I did go for a neck trim last week, so it was only about two months since my last haircut.

The FB Live talked about the high quality ingredients and how these particular products will work together well to boost your health in each of the four pillars:
  • Pillar One: Immunity & Prevention
  • Pillar Two: Sleep & Recovery
  • Pillar Three: Pain & Anxiety
  • Pillar Four: Health & Fitness
They also talked about round 2 of products being launched...nothing really specific except there might be a vanilla flavor of the Muscle Food Protein Drink, in addition to the current chocolate brownie flavor. If you know SendOutCards, then you know how good the brownies are. Does the drink taste like the brownies? I don't know but my package is supposed to arrive today, so I'll let you know.

Also included in your order is a plastic shaker bottle to use to mix your Muscle Food drink. There are already recipes floating around and one of the instructors at Prompting U will have some recipes in her future classes. But Prompting U already has some exercise and healthy eating classes available.

Go ahead and check out the training!

The 5 T’s of Mastering the Art of Poise

Today's blog post is from an article on The Art of Manliness:

Can you take a reprimand without blowing up? Can you take a turndown without being visibly discouraged? Can you laugh with the others when the joke is on you? Can you keep your spirits up when things go wrong? Can you speak in public without being noticeably ill at ease? Can you keep cool in emergencies?

The natural leader answers all these with a confident yes.

It is poise that makes one master of such situations. The natural leader is often a person who has deliberately acquired this poise.
There are a couple of stories in the article here, you can check them out in the original article.
Lack of poise is due to negligence, neglect of simple little habits. Here is what happened to one man who was giving himself the wrong start. He was beginning to fidget so much that people were uncomfortable in his presence. He was getting so ill at ease that he was justly worrying about himself and his future.

He was a brilliant young attorney, handicapped by a lack of poise. When things became difficult or when it looked as if a decision might go against him, he lost all poise.

Opposition lawyers had been quick to notice this, and capitalized on it. They made a point of annoying him until his nervous fidgeting turned into a complete loss of control.

He seemed destined for only a mediocre career, but he was wise enough to realize that he should do some thing to improve his poise. The five things he did for himself are easily remembered: each begins with the letter T.
  1. Think About the Other Person
  2. Touch a Talisman
  3. Think Twice Before Talking
  4. Take Slow, Deep Breaths
  5. Talk Your Troubles Over
Be sure to read the article to find out more about the 5 T's.

How to Clean Your Bedroom for Better Sleep

Today's blog post is based on a blog post by Dr. Michael Breus:

Have our homes ever been more lived in than in this past year? Most of us have been home, well, pretty much all the time for a long while. Even if you’ve been doing plenty of regular cleaning, you might be feeling extra in need of a good, deep, spring clean in your heavily trafficked home.

Bedrooms get overlooked sometimes, when it comes to both daily cleaning and periodic deep clean throughs. You wash your sheets…but when was the last time you cleaned the blinds in your bedroom, or washed your pillows?

This isn’t about having an Instagram-perfect bedroom. A combination of light, daily freshening up and periodic deep cleaning will have a big impact on how easily you fall asleep and your sleep quality throughout the night.

How?

Getting rid of accumulations of dirt, dust, germs, and debris helps avoid irritating allergies, which are highly disruptive to nightly sleep. Even for people without allergies, a clean bedroom protects against sleep-disrupting irritations to skin and to breathing during sleep.

A bedroom that accumulates dirt, germs, and odor—not only from environmental dust and debris but also from our own sweat and the skin cells we shed at night—will attract insects, including the dreaded bed bugs, which I wrote about recently.

A clean bedroom is radically more inviting, a place you’ll look forward to retreating at the end of a long day. A messy, cluttered bedroom, on the other hand, can be a real source of stress. Remember, stress—of any kind—elevates cortisol. To fall asleep with ease and to sleep soundly throughout the night, we need cortisol levels to follow their natural nightly rhythm and remain low at bedtime.

Taking care of your bedroom environment doesn’t have to be a huge production every day. Tackle some of the more labor-intensive tasks periodically (including washing your mattress, which I’ll talk about in a minute) and do other, lighter cleaning routinely, and you’ll have a bedroom that is consistently welcoming and relaxing, and promotes deeper, more restful and healthful sleep.
Here are 10 tips for getting your bedroom really clean for sleep—and keeping it that way:
  1. Take out what you don’t need
  2. Open your windows and door
  3. Start high and clean top to bottom
  4. Don’t forget the windows.
  5. Remember the forgotten spots!
  6. Clean your mattress
  7. Wash your pillows
  8. Swap out your sheets weekly
  9. Clean comforters, quilts and other bedding every month
  10. Start a daily cleaning practice for your bedroom
Be sure to read his blog post for more details on the 10 steps, including how-to tutorials!
Take 10 minutes to do the daily spot cleaning (4 hours before bed) that has the highest impact on your sleep space, and your bedroom will feel like the soothing, welcoming haven you can’t wait to retreat to. You’ll start your transition to sleep feeling more deeply relaxed and free to transition peacefully into sleep. And you’ll sleep better all night long.

I'm going to start doing these thinks, but I really need to do number 1. I cleaned out my second bedroom to use as an office and most the stuff that was in there found its way into my bedroom!

Wednesday - "The Secrets of Public Speaking From History’s Greatest Orators" From The Art of Manliness. "Despite the fact that public speaking remains an important and relevant skill in our modern age — you never know when you’ll need to give a toast at a wedding, pitch an idea at work, or champion a proposal at a city council meeting — most of us get very little instruction these days in how to do it effectively."

Thursday - "Should You Snooze Your Alarm Clock? #TBT" From Dr. Michael Breus. "Memory Hint: If you want a better memory, don’t use the snooze!"

Should You Snooze Your Alarm Clock? #TBT

Today's blog post was originally published two years ago:

Are you a snoozer? I haven't hit the snooze button in probably 20 years. But let's see what Dr. Michael Breus has to say in his article on the subject:

I don’t think I have ever really explained the dangers of the Snooze Button.
It’s an old pastime, likely from your high school days. The alarm blares, you, half dazed, slap the clock, hoping it will stop so you can get some much needed rest. Only it goes off again what feels like seconds later, even if it’s really 7-9 minutes later, and after the fourth time, you’re late for school! Now you’re an adult, and the same tradition seems to hold, at least for many.
So why was the snooze something that you started using back in high school and probably shouldn’t use now?
It’s all based on your Chronotype, of course
Remember most of us were a WOLF (aka Night Owls) during high school, because that is how our biology works. So of course, we needed extra prodding and pushing to get up in the morning, because our melatonin faucet was still flowing at whatever insane time you had to get up as a teenager.

I noticed that I would often end up running late...even if I moved the alarm out of reach. I'd just get up, hit the snooze and get back into bed. I decided instead of allowing an extra 20 or 30 minutes to snooze (which was never enough), I'd just set the alarm for when I needed to get up, which isn't always easy.

As an adult the science looks a little different.
  • Only 15% of people are WOLVES. Wolves get one snooze, but that is it. Do you know if you are a Wolf? If not go to thepowerofwhenquiz.com and figure it out quickly. All other Chronotypes should not use the snooze button. (I'm a Dolphin)
  • The alarm will sound in the early morning hours and you’ll slap the snooze button at the very end of your sleep cycle. This is when your brain is actually going into REM sleep and where much of the mental restoration of your brain occurs.
  • Memory Hint: If you want a better memory, don’t use the snooze!
  • Each stage of sleep has a different arousal threshold or point where you will wake up. If you are awakened from a deep stage of sleep like REM by a sudden jolt of sound or movement, a “fight or flight” response goes off in your brain. Meaning, “your body reacts as if there is some kind of emergency?”. This causes your levels of Adrenaline and Cortisol to increase dramatically, which in turn increases blood pressure, heart rate and cardiovascular function. This is fine when it happens one time, but if you hit the snooze 2,3,4, or 5 times you are basically shocking yourself awake multiple times a morning! Over time this is not a positive behavior.
  • The amount of time you have between snoozes is not enough to get you back into a deep restorative state. It takes the body a minimum of 15-20 minutes to get back into any deeper stage of sleep. So, you are wasting your final minutes with light, crappy sleep!

What should you do instead of hitting snooze?

  • Know your Chronotype and stick to your biologically prescribed bedtime.
  • If you are a WOLF, you can use the snooze one time but try not to do this daily.
  • Set your alarm for the last possible moment for you to get up and put the clock or alarm across the room so you have to get up to turn it off.
  • Have a “Wake up Buddy” that will call you in the morning and help motivate you.
  • Have Sex instead. For most Chronotypes, the best time to have sex, based on arousal, libido and performance is in the morning and if you are trying to think of a great way to start your day, this could work perfectly.

Most of us have to wake up at a certain time...usually to get ready for work, school, etc. So, to avoid hitting snooze we have to set our alarm to go off at that time, and to make sure we get enough sleep we can use the sleep calculator. My Fitbit shows me exactly when I fell asleep, how many times I woke up and for how long and how much time I spent in each sleep stage which makes it easy to figure out my sleep efficiency...which is between 85 - 90% most days!

The key is to go to bed and get up at the same time 7 days a week! I know I don't always do it but unless I have something scheduled during the day on the weekend I stick as close as I can to the same schedule.

Do yourself and your body a favor and just get up and turn off the alarm.  Then, get about fifteen minutes of sunlight or bright light exposure to stop the production of melatonin, drink a large glass of water, and start your day.
