Finding Fulfillment in a World Obsessed With Happiness

Today's post is based on a podcast in The Art of Manliness:
In recent years, there’s been a lot of books and blogs put out on how to become happier. But what if searching for happiness actually results in unhappiness, and to get happiness we need to be looking for something else?
That’s what my guest argues in her book. Her name is Emily Esfahani Smith and she’s the author of The Power of Meaning: Finding Fulfillment in a World Obsessed with Happiness

We begin our discussion talking about the difference between happiness and meaning and why the latter brings more fulfillment. Emily then highlights research that shows more and more Westerners are reporting that their life lacks meaning and the theories as to why that is. She then breaks down what the three pillars of a meaningful life are and what we can do to experience them. Emily and I then discuss whether it’s really possible to create meaning by yourself and whether or not it requires being embedded in a religious or spiritual tradition.
What is meaning? Connecting to something other than yourself. Many of the things that we connected with in the past have kind of faded from popularity, such as religion, patriotism and community. Although, they're making a comeback.

There is a discussion in the podcast of the three stages of development of a society...pre-development where the focus is on survival, where the institutions of religion and community are strong, developed where the society is thriving and people tend to move away from the institutions that gave meaning to their lives and post-developed...where these things are gaining again in importance.

These ideas kind of fit in with Turnings, which I wrote about here. We're probably entering the Crisis Turning, if we're not there already, which usually strengthens societal institutions, such as church and community:
The saeculum is broken up into four periods: First Turning (High), Second Turning (Awakening), Third Turning (Unraveling), Fourth Turning (Crisis). Each lasts roughly 20 years, just as the generations do. It’s helpful to imagine these periods as the seasons of the year. The Awakening is the summer of the saeculum, and the Crisis is the winter. The Unraveling (fall) and High (spring) are the transitional seasons. An Awakening changes a society’s culture; a Crisis changes its public life.
The Baby Boomer generation came of age during an Awakening Turning, Gen X during an Unraveling and Millennials during a Crisis.

Although these institutions aren't required to find meaning, they often make it easier. But how do Millennials relate to religion? Here's an excerpt from an article from The Huffington Post:.
At the same time, studies also indicate that Millennials treasure meaning and purpose in much of what they do, especially in their work and in relationships, along with positive “do-good” mission trips. They are less motivated by money and professional advancement than previous generations. However, because today’s Millennials are also the products of moral relativism, religiously taught on many college campuses, their relationships are becoming more unsustainable since relationship-building requires the very values that are being called into question. In addition, they wrestle, as we all do, with the seeming randomness of life where bad things seem to happen for apparently no reason.
Also:
But that’s just one advantage religion has for Millennials. Perhaps even more importantly, religion offers a moral compass, a value system so desperately needed to navigate the turbulent waters of morality and ethical issues with which we are all confronted. Ethical relativism and value neutrality make today’s world a confusing place with little definition of where the lines for right and wrong are drawn. Even more reason for organized religion to share its teachings that have been developed over millennia. The cohort of 18-29-year-olds are frequently unmoored by the shifts in what is and isn’t acceptable with regards to ethics in the workplace and morality in social relationships. It’s time for the clergy to step up, reach out and help young people find guidelines that will resonate and provide a haven. Religious leaders have become convinced that young people simply don’t care about what we have to say and that is just not the case. Young people are looking for guidance. We just must make a compelling case for how a core teaching of our faith can make a difference.
So, listen to the podcast to find out more about how to find meaning in your life and see if it's a better path to finding happiness!

Build Your Wealth: Graduate from a Paycheck Mentality to a Net Worth Mentality #TBT

This was originally posted last year:

Today's blog post is based on an article from The Art of Manliness:
The authors of The Bogleheads’ Guide to Investing (a book inspired by the sage investing principles of Jack Bogle) describe two mentalities when it comes to personal finance: the paycheck mentality and the net worth mentality. A person with a paycheck mentality just focuses on increasing their income in order to increase their wealth. A person with a net worth mentality also seeks to boost their income, but builds their wealth through saving and investing as well.
Most people live paycheck to paycheck, in fact a lot of people are one paycheck away from homelessness. According to Quora:
One in three of us are potentially one paycheck away from homelessness, with a new survey showing that many people would be unable to pay their rent or mortgage for more than a month if they lost their job.
Back to AoM:
The problem, according to the authors, is that it’s easy to conflate income and wealth:
“From the time we are old enough to understand, society conditions us to confuse income with wealth. We believe that doctors, CEOs, professional athletes, and movie actors are rich because they earn high incomes. We judge the economic success of our friends, relatives, and colleagues at work by how much money they earn. Six- and seven-figure salaries are regarded as status symbols of wealth. Although there is a definite relationship between income and wealth, they are very separate and distinct economic measures. Income is how much money you earn in a given period of time. If you earn a million in a year and spend it all, you add nothing to your wealth. You’re just living lavishly. Those who focus only on net income as a measure of economic success are ignoring the most important measuring stick of financial independence. It’s not how much you make, it’s how much you keep.”
Here are some highlights from the article:

The Benefits of a Net Worth Mentality

  • The paycheck mentality is fragile; the net worth mentality is antifragile.
  • Wealth grows even when you’re not working.
  • A two-pronged approach builds wealth faster.

How to Calculate and Track Your Net Worth

How to Start Increasing Your Net Worth Today

  • Practice frugality.
  • Start an emergency fund.
  • Pay down your debt.
  • Start investing in index funds.
  • Find ways to increase your immediate income.
Take a few minutes and check out the article, there's plenty of additional information there.

I'm still reading "The Millionaire Next Door". This post fits right in with the ideas from that book. Also, check out this post for some hints on how to save for a down payment for a home...which is one of the best ways to build your net worth.

10 Cheap Date Ideas She’ll Actually Love

This is from an article in The Art of Manliness:
If you’ve decided to take on the challenge of dating women instead of simply hanging out with them, there’s both good news and bad news.
The bad news is that you’re going to have to overcome your nervousness and fear of rejection.
But the good news is that taking women out on dates doesn’t have to be expensive. It simply takes a little more thought.
I suppose this could also apply when you're married...these might be some ideas you can use for your date nights!

Here's a list of 10 ideas for cheap, fun dates:
1. Wine Tasting
2. Hit a Flea Market
3. The Sunset Hike + Post Pub Visit
4. The Photography-Filled Afternoon
5. The Bicycle Picnic
6. Take a Historical Walking Tour of Your Town
7. Cheering on Your Local Roller Derby Girls
8. The Untraditional Movie Night
9. Farmer’s Market in the Morning, Making Dinner Together That Evening
10. Monopoly. Loser Buys Dinner or Drinks
Plus there's a special bonus #11, but you'll actually have to go over and check out the article!

What do you think, ladies? Do any of these ideas appeal to you? Maybe you should get your boyfriend and/or husband to take a look at this blog post.

Goals - Achieving Greatness

That's the theme of today's A Leg Up Meetup. Co-organizer, Judy Stark, posted this video by Eric Worre, a network marketing trainer. In the video, Eric talks about the importance of motivation, or why you want to accomplish your goal.

Per Eric:
Instead of focusing on setting goals to get, I want to give you a strategy that will help you actually achieve those goals...but with a different purpose.
Eric goes on to talk about how motivations of growth or contribution will help you to achieve your goals better than self-centered motivations.

A quote from my Facebook friend, Ellen Marrs, puts it pretty well "Don't use people to build your business, use your business to build people". If your goal, whether professional or personal, will help build people; whether team members, customers or others, then it will likely be successful.

Eric also talks about income and rank advancement goals. Jim Rohn asked Eric how much he wanted to earn. Eric said a million dollars a year. Jim said that's a good goal but the reward isn't the money but who you have to become in order to earn that money. You have to grow to be a top earner in network marketing. If you can help your team reach their income goals, you'll reach yours. Today's training webinar by Jordan Adler, SendOutCards' top income earner, will be about how to earn any amount of income that you desire in SOC. If you're curious as to how much money you can earn with SendOutCards, then listen to the call tonight at 6:30 PM PDT.

I have a rank advancement goal to be an Executive with SendOutCards by the time of the Executive Retreat in September. The only way I can realistically get to that level is by helping the members of my team to at least get to the rank below that, Senior Manager, if not to get them to Executive themselves.

As far as setting the goal itself, don't get bogged down with SMART goals. Whatever you want to accomplish can be a goal. The when and how much are the objectives you want to accomplish to get you to your goal. Check out my blog post about GOATS to find out more.

Just a spoonful of creativity… #TBT

This post is from last year. I don't have my SendOutCards blog anymore, maybe I should start it up again!

Since today is Poetry And The Creative Mind Day and Friday is World Creativity and Innovation Day, I figured it was a good time to share this post from my SendOutCards blog:

A study recently published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that by doing one small creative task each day, participants experienced more enthusiasm and energy in their lives. It didn’t matter what they were doing or how well they did it, just as long as they took the time to be a little creative daily.

“Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvelous.” – Bill Moyers

Each of us has the ability to be creative and make something new. Using that energy to create lifts us out of our everyday lives and helps us to express who we are and what we feel. That’s why it’s so important to practice and why we should all seek a little creativity in our lives. Need a few ideas?

  • Doodle every day for at least ten minutes.
  • Free write each morning – whatever comes to your mind.
  • Get out some play dough, paint or crayons and have fun with the kids. Kids are great at being creative and showing us adults how fun it can be. Just follow their lead and you’ll be busy in no time!
  • Take up a new art hobby like painting, photography or sculpting.
  • Arrange your furniture in new and fun ways.
  • Celebrate fun or unique holidays throughout the year in different ways.
  • Bake or cook something you have never tried before and don’t worry about how it turns out.
  • Sing a song or play an instrument each day.
  • Take silly pictures and write funny captions for them with your family.
  • Do a sketch or skit with your family.
  • Make your own greeting cards for any occasion you want.
There are so many other ideas you can add to your list. You can pick one to try for awhile or do a different one each day. All that matters is that each day you put a little time aside to cast off your worries and responsibilities and enjoy the freedom to create!

Saving for a down payment?

Today's blog post was inspired by a newsletter from my friend, Jennifer Seidelman. You can find her original post here,

According to Jennifer, there are several ways to save for a down payment:
Set up automatic deposits.
Try a round-off app.
Cut down on spending.
Clean house.
I've combined the first two methods by setting up an automatic deposit to my Acorns account, as well as using it to round up my purchases. If you don't have an Acorns account, you can go here and sign up for a free account. In fact when you sign up using my link, we'll each get $5 from Acorns to invest right away.

I'm also working on the third one, although I have a ways to go. I use YNAB (You Need a Budget) to track my expenses, which makes it easier to get my expenses under control, since you can't control your expenses if you don't know what you're spending your money on. If you click on the YNAB link above, we'll both get a free month added to our subscriptions. If you want to find out more about YNAB and Acorns, I've written about them here.

Number four sounds like something I can take advantage of also. Jennifer links to an article that discusses the 5 Best Apps for Buying and Selling Used Stuff. I've heard of letgo, but I haven't heard of the others.

If you're able to earn more money AND save on your taxes, you'll be able to put even more money away for your down payment. An excellent way to do this is to start your own home based business. With a home based business, not only can you make some extra money, but many of your current expenses can be fully or partially tax deductible...such as part of your rent or mortgage and utilities if you have a dedicated space for a home office, meals and mileage if the money is spent building your business, some of your health insurance premiums, and much more. I highly recommend the company I'm with: SendOutCards, if you don't currently have a home based business.

And in wrapping up:
Remember, you don't need the mythical 20 percent down payment ready and available to buy a home. In fact, thanks to low down payment loan options and a plethora of down payment assistance programs, you can actually buy a property with much less than that -- sometimes just 3 percent!
If you're looking to buy or sell a home in the Portland or San Francisco Bay Areas, check out Jennifer's website!

I don't know what to write about!

Sometimes I can't seem to come up with a topic to write about and this is one of those times!

Usually when I have a hard time, I'll fall back on Harvey Mackay or The Art of Manliness but nothing really seemed to grab my attention...although I had briefly considered "How to Cross a Piranha-Infested River" in AoM, because you'll never know when that might come in handy, but I decided against it.

Sometimes I'll look at the upcoming interesting days for inspiration...today is "Ford Mustang Day" which is at least somewhat interesting...but nah.

So, I guess I'll just aimlessly wander until I come up with enough gibberish to call it a post, but I'm not sure exactly how much that is, although I'm pretty sure it's more than this.

I've joined lots of Meetup groups recently. I also took over an existing group and started my own group. The group I took over is the South Bay Cashflow Gamers group. I attended a few of their meetings since I like playing the Cashflow game. It's too far away for me to actually attend any games but I didn't want it to die. I'll need to figure out what to do with it though.

The group that I started is the Modesto Network Marketers group. I did have one meeting with this group and the next one is coming up this Saturday. This Saturday's meeting we will be playing the MLM board game. I guess I like games. Although that's not the primary purpose of the group...it's to be a resource for the network marketing community at large, even though our in person meetings will focus on the Modesto area.

The MLM game is a good way to break the ice and get to know the other members, as well as a way to introduce prospects to the industry. I hope you'll join the group.

I think this is probably enough gibberish for one blog post...hopefully I'll have a real topic to write about tomorrow!

Same delicious brownies! New lower price!

The price of a 2-pack of SendOutCards brownies has gone down! They're still 10 points if you're on the old points plan, which means that they range in price from $3.90 to $6.60 depending on how much you paid for your points. If you're currently on a subscription, you can stay there until at least October, if you'd like, or you can switch to a new plan anytime you're ready. And you can continue using your existing points until they're gone.

But SendOutCards has completely changed the system! The new price is $4.20 if you're on a Free account, $3.57 if you're on the Enhanced account, or $2.94 for a Premium or Enterprise account!

I talked a little about these plans last week, but I'll go over them again here:

You can download this photo here so you can see it better, but I'll summarize it for you here:
  • Free - Highest price for cards and gifts, limited relationship manager (contact manager)
  • Enhanced - Lower price for cards and gifts, fully functional relationship manager
  • Premium - Lowest price on gifts, unlimited free single send cards to anywhere in the world (includes postage)
  • Enterprise - Same as Premium but includes 100 free group send cards per month (postage extra)
If you're not a SendOutCards customer, go ahead and try it out for free...there is no obligation and the first card is on me!
