Money, money, money

"Yes, Sometimes It Is About The Money" written by Steve Schulz is an awesome book by a man who has made millions of dollars in the network marketing industry and is currently the President of Field Operations for SendOutCards.

Today I'm going to talk a little bit about money but more specifically about the different kinds of income.

First, I'm going to talk about the difference between active and passive income. You see these every year when you fill out your income taxes. I copied these definitions from this blog post

Definitions: Active vs. Passive Income

Using Investopedia, which should be in every investor’s browser favorites, the definitions of active income and passive income are as follows:
Active Income: Income for which services have been performed. This includes wages, tips, salaries, commissions and income from businesses in which there is material participation.
Passive Income: Earnings an individual derives from a rental property, limited partnership or other enterprise in which he or she is not actively involved.
Investopedia goes on to explain that passive income does not include earnings from “active business participation”. To go a less formal route on defining these two terms I’ll tell you my own interpretations of them:
Active income means you are doing something in order to receive that income. Some kind of work. Some kind of effort. You are not hands-off. You have to exert some kind of energy and time towards earning that income. Passive income means you are earning regular income with little to no effort required to keep it coming. You are for the most part hands-off.
The other distinction I'd like to discuss is linear vs residual vs leveraged residual income. This is an excellent article that discusses all three, although it kind of lumps the 2 types of residual income together. And when they talk about referral marketing, it's the same as network marketing or MLM (Multi Level Marketing).

So, to recap that article...linear income is what most people make from their jobs or traditional businesses. You work 40 (or 50 or 60...) hours a week and you get paid for those hours. Then your boss gives you the privilege of doing it again the following week. And the following week. Ad nauseum. But if you decide you don't want to do that anymore? You don't get paid anymore. Residual income is money that you earn over and over for work that you do once. Most people are familiar with royalties. An artist (singer, songwriter, author, etc) creates their masterpiece once and gets paid each time their masterpiece is sold. Residual and leveraged residual income is what you earn in network marketing. You earn residual income when you sign up a customer once and they repeatedly buy from you after that. You earn leveraged residual income when you sign up a distributor under you and you earn residual income from the customers that THEY sign up! And then those distributors sign up other distributors and you receive residual income from the customers that THEY sign up...often ad infinitum!

I don't know what other companies pay, but SendOutCards pays 20% residual income and between 2% and 27% leveraged residual income, depending on your rank. I'm currently at the 2% level but I'm working to advance to the 7% level soon.

If you'd like to learn how to get residual and leveraged residual income, call or text me at (707)685-1382, email me at rick.tompkins@yahoo.com or check out my website at new.sendoutcards.com/144087

July - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/independent-retailer-month/ This fits in with my blog post from yesterday (I guess I was a couple of days early). It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cell-phone-courtesy-month/ We all need to practice this all the time! And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/picnic-month/ Who wants to join me? And you probably shouldn't celebrate https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/horseradish-month/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ice-cream-month/ together

Tomorrow - What better way to kick off Ice Cream Month than https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/creative-ice-cream-flavors-day/? What's your favorite creative flavor? I need to expand my horizons (and waistline probably). It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/second-half-of-the-year-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-joke-day/ is a fun way to kick off the second half! And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/zip-code-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/postal-worker-day/ Zip Codes are important to postal workers and postal workers are important to my business. And lastly, but nowhere leastly,  it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/canada-day/

July 30 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/father-in-law-day/ And what better way to celebrate than to take him out for a chili dog followed up by some cheesecake, and then take him to the bookstore and buy him a good paperback book! Almost makes me wish my boys were married! But I'll go out and celebrate these days by myself.

Support your local...

How many of you remember those movies from the late 60's and early 70's starring James Garner?

But today I'm writing about supporting your local businesses.

I talked a little bit about this back in November, but thanks to a Facebook post by Tammy Villeggiante I decided it was time to bring it up again.

The local business owners, whether the person who owns a brick and mortar business downtown, or the person who teaches piano out of their home or the network marketer sharing the product or service that they're passionate about, are our neighbors and they use the money to pay for braces for their children at the local orthodontist or piano lessons at the local piano teacher's home or to buy jerseys for the local youth softball team that they sponsor.

Like I mentioned in that post in November, I'm buying more of my products from small businesses, whether it's from a friend in a network marketing or direct sales business or the local barbershop that's been around forever!

The holidays will be here before you know it (yes, I know it's the middle of summer right now but you know you'll be wondering how it got to be Thanksgiving already), so support your local small business, whether it's a small specialty boutique or that person who sells greeting cards in their network marketing business.

Cashflow 101

I know I wrote about this back in March, but since I'm going again tomorrow I thought I'd bring it up again.

For  those of you who aren't familiar with Cashflow 101 and don't want to click on the link above, I'll talk about the game a little bit.

Cashflow 101 is a board game created by Robert Kiyosaki of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" fame. I like to think of it as Monopoly on steroids, not only can you buy and sell real estate but also stocks. No, you can't build houses or hotels on your property but you collect rents every month whether somebody lands on it or not. A lot of people don't like the game because you keep financial statements...a balance sheet and income statement, but this is one of the main reasons the game was created...to boost financial literacy. But don't worry...there's an app for that! I use this app a lot when I play. This is NOT the Cashflow 101 game, but a calculator to keep track of your financial statements!

There's also an online version of the game available at http://www.richdad.com/apps-games/cashflow-classic. I've played it quite a bit, but haven't played lately. You can create a new game or join an existing game.

Robert Kiyosaki is very important to me and my SendOutCards business for two reasons:

  1. He wrote a book with Donald Trump called "Why We Want You to be Rich". The book talks a lot about network marketing and caused me to get back into it. I joined a network marketing business, Team Beachbody, right before I moved out of the house in March of 2012.
  2. The day after I moved out of the house I went to a Meetup for the Cashflow 101 game. If you want to find out more about that, click on the link above and watch the video. It was at this game that I was introduced to SOC and figured it'd be a great way to promote my Team Beachbody business...but after 4 months I still had 3 1/2 bags of their protein drink and realized that I was probably in the wrong business and turned to SendOutCards as my primary business.

Are you an optimist?

I've seen this before on Facebook but since I needed a topic for today's blog post I seized the opportunity.

I've seen quite a few like this, such as:

And of course:

Please excuse the language, but I found this version funny!

I think I'm a pretty optimistic person, at least for the most part. But what is optimism? And how can you get it if you don't have it?

op·ti·mism
ˈäptəˌmizəm/
noun
  1. 1
hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something.
"the talks had been amicable, and there were grounds for optimism"
synonyms:hopefulness, hopeconfidencebuoyancycheer, cheerfulness, good cheer, sanguineness, positiveness, positive attitude
"I wish I had your optimism"
  2. 2
    PHILOSOPHY
the doctrine, especially as set forth by Leibniz, that this world is the best of all possible worlds.
There are quite a few articles on the internet about how to become more optimistic, but I love the title of this one "The Pessimist's Guide To Being Optimistic" and it has good advice, too!

I think social media has become very pessimistic in general. I saw a quote a while back, but I can't find it again, that says something like "If you're not smiling while you're on Twitter, you're following the wrong people". Pessimism and optimism are both contagious, do what you can to protect yourself from the pessimists who want to bring you down to their level.

What is Periscope?

No, not what is a periscope, but what is Periscope? Periscope is the new social media sensation and I'm going to tell you a little bit about it and hopefully you'll be able to see a demo in a few minutes.

There is an excellent article in Wired Magazine that you can read if you'd like to learn more, plus I'll share a few more resources with you.

Basically Periscope is video broadcasting on demand. When you start broadcasting your followers are notified and they can join in to see what you're doing and comment while you're broadcasting. When I did my demo broadcast a few minutes ago, Steve Gullett joined me live, on his smart phone I'm assuming, and 5 others viewed via the web. And one person, Greg Pixls, has watched the replay so far. Replays are saved for 24 hours on the system but you can save the video to your phone...I hope I had enough memory to save my video!

It looks like it worked. It's been uploaded at least but I haven't looked at it yet.

Caren Glasser has some excellent info on Spark It Network...be sure to check it out!

The app works on both Apple and Android...just go to www.periscope.tv to find out more.

Let's not forget https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/catfish-day/ I think I just saw something on Facebook about the world's biggest catfish being caught and if it was on FB you know that it must be true. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/color-tv-day/ How many of you remember when a program broadcast in color was a big deal?

Next Wednesday - It's both https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/postal-worker-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/zip-code-day/ I remember postal zones. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/tequila-day/ With lime and salt? Straight shot? In a margarita? I say yes to all of the above.

Finally!

83 posts ago I ran a contest to find out which of my previous posts were your favorites. I only had 2 entries...Linda Arrowwood who liked all of my posts (thanks Linda!) and Elizabeth Walker who actually picked a favorite.

Elizabeth's favorite post was "Taking the plunge" from March 8th of this year. I interviewed her to ask her why she picked this post.

When she was a kid she went swimming there with her brother and their friends...and when she was an adult her daughter took swimming lessons there. Lauren also attended the Girl Scout camp up on the hill behind the Hayward Plunge, which I didn't know existed until Elizabeth mentioned it. Here are a couple of pictures of the cabin at the Girl Scout camp.

And here's a sign for the Hayward Plunge

I had hoped to do a video interview, but I never figured it out. I'll try to be ready when the 300th blog post contest happens in about 2 weeks!

Show Dad what he means to you

This is from my SendOutCards blog. If yo haven't signed up for my email list yet, go to rickscardpage.sendcere.net and enter your email address. You'll receive a welcome email and an email when a new blog entry is posted.

Show Dad what he means to you

33552292_MAccording to research, dads often get the short end of the stick when it comes to being recognized on their day. In fact one recent survey found that if Mother’s Day and Father’s Day were celebrated on the same day, 78% of adult children would acknowledge Mom over Dad.
The people who were surveyed gave a variety of reasons for choosing Mom. Perhaps one reason Mom gets more attention is that she had an official holiday proclaimed 58 years earlier than Dad. Before you get too upset with those people who don’t seem to find fathers as important, consider that early attempts to establish a day honoring men were belittled by those very honorees. According to one historian, men “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving.”
But should that keep you from honoring Dad?
While letting Dad know that you appreciate him shouldn’t be reserved only for one day of the year, Father’s Day does provide the perfect opportunity to express your love and gratitude to the fathers in your life.
The colorful Jim Valvano once said of his father, “My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person – he believed in me.”
If you have a man in your life who has guided you yet allowed you to forge your own way, believing that you would accomplish whatever you set out to do, then you are truly blessed. Whether this person is your father, stepfather, grandfather or even a friend’s father who has played a significant role in your life, saying “I love you” will mean so much.
This Father’s Day, show Dad what he means to you.

The rule of thumb is to stir any drink that is meant to be translucent, Martinis and Manhattans for example, and shake anything that already has an opaque ingredient like citrus.  Incidentally, stirring a usually shaken drink can produce some interesting flavors.
So, a regular martini is most properly stirred, while a chocolate martini should be shaken. But if you're a tough guy like James Bond, shaken is more violent. Read the full article here.

Next Thursday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/global-beatles-day/https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/catfish-day/https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/color-tv-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/strawberry-parfait-day/ You can watch a recording of the lads on Ed Sullivan on your color telly while eating catfish followed by a strawberry parfait. Back in those days my grandparents were the only ones I knew with a color TV

July 18 - Exactly one month after Sushi Day, it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/caviar-day/ I've had caviar before but it's not high on my list of fun foods to eat

What's up, SOC?

SendOutCards is going through a few changes. In fact, they're making things simpler.

At one time, SOC had something called the Treat'em Right seminar. This was a personal development seminar that was really appropriate for anybody...not just SendOutCards distributors.

Treat'em Right Seminars

Be inspired to find the genius within you by attending one of our Treat’em Right Seminars! This event is the perfect opportunity to build on your personal development and explore life-changing opportunities. You’ll hear firsthand from our founder and CEO Kody Bateman about how acting on your promptings will change your life and the lives of others around you You’ll learn how to open up possibilities and eliminate doubts in order to be your best self. The Treat’em Right Seminar will give you the daily mechanism to send positivity out to the world and achieve the success you’ve always imagined.
Earlier this year, the TER was put on the back burner as the Mastering Relationship Marketing seminar was rolled out. The MRM was designed to teach business owners how to build their businesses by building their relationships with their customers.

Master Relationship Marketing Seminars

Learn how to create additional income streams by plugging into the philosophy of Relationship Marketing.

In this two-day workshop, you will learn the importance of nurturing relationships in your life and business, as well as how to plug into a system that conveniently allows you to do so. You will walk away with an enhanced opportunity to apply this principle and system not only to your own business, but market it to other businesses as well.
And just this month, the bootcamp was launched.

Bootcamp Events

Come experience first hand how our industry leaders have become the most successful in the business. You’ll go back to the basics and how to implement simplicity into your business. Learn how new age technology is the key tool in building your business in the palm of your hand.

This is a must attend event to learn the most pivotal nuts and bolts information that has helped the most successful in the industry recruit, gain and build successful teams.
Kody Bateman (founder and CEO of SendOutCards) has created a video on how he has simplified things. However, that video doesn't seem to be available to the general public yet, so I'll recap it for you.

70% of the 100+ million cards that SOC has sent out has been from businesses following up with their customers and clients, which is why the MRM was created. The MRM is a live, 2 day event but it was difficult for business owners to get away. So, the MRM will be made into a digital course, probably by July sometime, and the TER will be brought back and the bootcamp will continue. The next bootcamp, which is the 2nd one, will be in Denver on July 11th.

So, the TER is for general self development, the MRM digital course will be for all business owners who want to grow their business and the bootcamp will be to develop network marketing skills. I'm looking forward to all of these!

Mentored By An Eagle

I learned quite a bit at the Mentored by an Eagle event in Sacramento on Saturday, put on by DeMarr Zimmerman and Bart Miller.

Like I mentioned last week, which I'm sure you all remember, Eagle is the highest rank in SendOutCards. There are only 3 Eagle distributorships in SOC and DeMarr is one of them.

DeMarr is the second highest earner in SendOutCards and Bart Miller is probably the fastest rising star in SOC history...I wouldn't be surprised if he was the top income earner in the company soon.

Bart and DeMarr both pointed out the need to simplify. Most people want to point out all the cool things that SendOutCards can do when speaking to a prospective customer or distributor. Just show the app and use the Mobile Pocket Presentation to show the money. The website new.sendoutcards.com/144087 does a pretty good job of showing how to make money, but the MPP is more personal. I need to practice my presentation, so if anybody is willing to sit through about 5 or 10 minutes of awkwardness, I'd appreciate it. I committed to doing 10 presentations in the next 2 weeks...I've only done one so far.

Gregory Festo and I were both interviewed on Mark Herdering's weekly call last night...click here to listen to the recording of the call.

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cherry-tart-day/ and https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fresh-veggies-day/ I had relish and onions on my Casper's hot dog...does that count? And of course, in case any of you missed my Facebook posts, it's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fudge-day/

Tomorrow -https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/eat-your-vegetables-day/ Enough with the vegetables already! Although I'll probably go to Sweet Tomatoes to celebrate! It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/apple-strudel-day/

Next Tuesday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/let-it-go-day/ Just do it! And it's https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/public-service-day/ Hug a cop, or firefighter or paramedic. It's also Pink Day https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pink-day/

July 16 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/corn-fritters-day/ I don't think I've ever had any and I wouldn't even know where to go to get some

Busy weekend

This was a busy weekend and I didn't prepare anything for today. In the next day or two, I will share what I learned at the "Mentored by an Eagle" training that I attended on Saturday. But I did do my first MPP on Sunday. And yes, I'll go into that in my blog post on the training.

Interesting days

Next Monday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/onion-rings-day/ I haven't had onion rings in a while. Who makes good ones? Or would you rather do it yourself? If so, here's a recipe for you. And for dessert, you can have one of my favorites...https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chocolate-eclair-day/ And here's a recipe for that.

July 15 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pet-fire-safety-day/ If you have a pet, you should take a look. It's also https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/gummi-worm-day/ I'm not a big gummy fan, but I do like https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/tapioca-pudding-day/ And here's another recipe for you
