I received a suggestion to write about what I'm thankful for and since I haven't received any other suggestions I guess I'm stuck with it :-)

What I'm thankful for

I think I'll go back about 4 or 5 years. I had read "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and Stephen Covey talks about beginning with the end in mind and to imagine your funeral and what people there would say about you. As I thought about it, I realized that besides the wife and kids, my sister and my nieces would probably be the only ones there. I determined that it was probably a good idea to reconnect with old friends and to possibly make new ones. So, I reconnected with friends on Facebook and classmates.com (this was about the time of my 35th reunion). I also decided to get out and meet new people and I found the perfect vehicle for doing that was network marketing. So, hopefully there will now be at least a few more people at my funeral.

So, I'm thankful for Facebook for helping me reconnect with old friends and for Facebook and network marketing for helping me make new friends. And I'm also very thankful for all of my friends, old and new.

I'm thankful for my sister for putting up with me for 2 1/2 months and for letting me stay with her this weekend. I'm thankful for my cousin Janet and her family for hosting Thanksgiving again!

I'm thankful for Yangchen and Tenley for letting me rent a room from them. I'm thankful to my SendOutCards sponsor, Gregory, for introducing me to them. I'm thankful for Dennis sponsoring the Meetup where I met Gregory (this is some of the magic that I talked about in my YouTube video about 2 years ago).

I'm thankful for my wife. Even though we're separated and working on a divorce, we still had several good years and two wonderful sons.

I'm thankful for all the opportunities we have in this country.

But most of all I'm thankful for YOU!

Warning! Math geekiness ahead!

Sunday is Fibonacci Day

Who or what is a Fibonacci you may ask and what has it got to do with math? I'm glad you asked!

Fibonacci was a person who lived during the Middle Ages. According to Wikipedia:

Leonardo Bonacci (c. 1170 – c. 1250)[2]—known as Fibonacci (Italian: [fiboˈnattʃi]), and also Leonardo of PisaLeonardo PisanoLeonardo Pisano BigolloLeonardo Fibonacci—was an Italian mathematician, considered as "the most talented Western mathematician of the Middle Ages.".[3][4]

He is best known for creating a sequence of numbers, known as the fibonacci numbers or the fibonacci sequence. This sequence is 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5…where each number is the sum of the previous 2 numbers starting with 0 and 1 as the seeds.

Fibonacci also introduced the Arabic numerals 0-9 and place notation to Europe.

See the Wikipedia article about his life.

Fibonacci numbers

This sequence of numbers was used to describe a mathematical problem in Fibonacci's book. According to Wikipedia:

In the West, the Fibonacci sequence first appears in the book Liber Abaci (1202) by Leonardo of Pisa, known as Fibonacci.[5] Fibonacci considers the growth of an idealized (biologically unrealistic) rabbit population, assuming that: a newly born pair of rabbits, one male, one female, are put in a field; rabbits are able to mate at the age of one month so that at the end of its second month a female can produce another pair of rabbits; rabbits never die and a mating pair always produces one new pair (one male, one female) every month from the second month on. The puzzle that Fibonacci posed was: how many pairs will there be in one year?
  • At the end of the first month, they mate, but there is still only 1 pair.
  • At the end of the second month the female produces a new pair, so now there are 2 pairs of rabbits in the field.
  • At the end of the third month, the original female produces a second pair, making 3 pairs in all in the field.
  • At the end of the fourth month, the original female has produced yet another new pair, the female born two months ago produces her first pair also, making 5 pairs.
At the end of the nth month, the number of pairs of rabbits is equal to the number of new pairs (which is the number of pairs in month n − 2) plus the number of pairs alive last month (n − 1). This is the nth Fibonacci number.[15]

There are many uses for these numbers.

They are used to approximate the golden ratio. According to Wikipedia:

In mathematics, two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. The figure on the right illustrates the geometric relationship. Expressed algebraically, for quantities a and b with a > b > 0,
 \frac{a+b}{a} = \frac{a}{b} \ \stackrel{\text{def}}{=}\ \varphi,
where the Greek letter phi (φ) represents the golden ratio. Its value is:
\varphi = \frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2} = 1.6180339887\ldots.
The golden ratio is also called the golden section (Latin: sectio aurea) or golden mean.[1][2][3] Other names include extreme and mean ratio,[4] medial sectiondivine proportiondivine section (Latin: sectio divina), golden proportiongolden cut,[5] and golden number.[6][7][8]

Here is a photo to explain this:

The ratio of any two adjacent fibonacci numbers is an approximation of the golden ratio, and as the numbers get larger the ratio gets closer and closer to the golden ratio, i.e. F(n)/F(n-1)

Also according to Wikipedia:

Fibonacci sequences appear in biological settings,[9] in two consecutive Fibonacci numbers, such as branching in trees, arrangement of leaves on a stem, the fruitlets of a pineapple,[10] the flowering of artichoke, an uncurling fern and the arrangement of a pine cone,[11] and the family tree of honeybees.[55]

I've also seen them used as a betting sequence in blackjack.

 According to Wikipedia:

Fibonacci numbers are used in a polyphase version of the merge sort algorithm in which an unsorted list is divided into two lists whose lengths correspond to sequential Fibonacci numbers – by dividing the list so that the two parts have lengths in the approximate proportion φ. A tape-drive implementation of the polyphase merge sort was described in The Art of Computer Programming.
Fibonacci numbers arise in the analysis of the Fibonacci heap data structure.

(This is computer science stuff).

Here is the link to the Wikipedia article on fibonacci numbers.

I'm sure my fan was worried that there wouldn't be a blog today, but fear not for it has arrived, a little late but it's here.

I'm at a Starbucks in San Ramon, #HangingOutForALiving like my friend Mark Herdering (I know the hashtag doesn't work in my blog, but I still think it's pretty cool). Unfortunately the wifi here is very SLOW!

I don't really have anything in particular to talk about today so I'm going to ramble aimlessly and see if anything interesting falls out of my brain.

It's been raining pretty good most of the day. I guess we're trying to get a year's worth of rain today.

I guess I should've gone to the Rosie the Riveter Museum this past weekend since the weather was still nice, but I think I've been trying to catch up on sleep the last couple of weeks. I put about 10,000 miles on my car in about two months and I think it, and I, were getting pretty burnt out.

Nope, nothing interesting. I guess that's it for now. Time to finish up my grande mocha and head over to the gym, which is very conveniently across the parking lot. But I do have something planned for tomorrow, so please tune in then,

Infinite Banking Concept

Interesting title, but what does it mean?

Infinite banking has been around for a couple of hundred years but it was popularized by R. Nelson Nash in his book "Becoming Your Own Banker".

I'm not really going to go into the intricacies here, since I probably can't do it justice. I do know two people who can explain it very well, John Montoya of http://jlmwealthstrategies.com and Dennis Beckman of Infinite Financial Strategies. I've met with both of these gentlemen a number of times. In fact, I got two of my SendOutCards customers from an event that John held and I first heard about SendOutCards from an event that Dennis held, which is why I'm posting this today. Every month Dennis holds a Meetup that features Robert Kiyosaki's Cashflow game where Dennis explains the basics of the infinite banking concept and then incorporates it into the Cashflow game so that you can see firsthand how it works. Dennis' game is held on the 4th Saturday of every month, except holidays, which means that it's coming up this Saturday.  Come check it out on Meetup. Maybe I'll see you there.

Since there's no way that I could've said this better, I copied this from the Days of the Year website (the link is in the Interesting days section below)

National Entrepreneurs' Day

When you think about it, the world is crammed with great products that we took for granted, but that were once non-existent until they were somehow dreamed up by a budding entrepreneur. From the postage stamp to the jet engine, and the cheeseburger to the microchip, radical inventions by brilliant minds have changed the way we live our lives and shaped our futures. In recognition of these people you can now celebrate Entrepreneurship Day which, since its inauguration in 2010, is an annual event that honours those men and women who have very often created an empire from absolutely nothing, most of them making themselves rather wealthy in the process as well. America is a country made of entrepreneurs. Men and women who built something from nothing. Created jobs. Made America what it is today. In many ways, the present was built by them. We can genuinely hope that the next generation of potential Walt Disneys, Bill Gates’es, Mark Zuckerbergs and Coco Chanels might be inspired to launch their business model and take the world by storm by the stories of some of the greatest businessmen and women of our time.

The History of National Entrepreneurs’ Day

National Entrepreneurs’ Day, an insofar American holiday, was started in 2010 by David Hauser and Siamak Taghaddos, co-founders of Grasshopper, the entrepreneur’s phone system, as well as Amir Tehrani, entrepreneur and co-founder of The Legacy Foundation. The holiday falls on the last day of Global Entrepreneurship week, during National Entrepreneurship Month and is meant to be a way of showing gratitude and respect to the people who achieved success, sometimes against all odds, and were able to help a lot of people by creating  jobs for them in the process. In 2012, President Barack Obama declared the November of that year as National Entrepreneurship Month and to celebrate November 6, 2012 as National Entrepreneurs’ Day. Supporters of National Entrepreneurs’ Day are trying to make it an actual official US holiday that would fall on the third Tuesday of very November.

How to Celebrate National Entrepreneurs’ Day

On this day, entrepreneurs are encouraged to thank mentors, give funding and advice, and spread the word about how to achieve success in business. People who are not yet successful entrepreneurs might want to read the biography of a particularly successful business man or woman in order to inspire themselves. Groups of like-minded people, be they friends, college students or businessmen just getting their start might want to meet up to talk about the lives of some of these people, and the steps they took in their lives to become as successful as they did, conduct a sort of analysis of the person’s life and achievements. They can also take this time to brainstorm new ideas or present their own ideas theories to the group in order to get feedback and constructive criticism.

Last but by no means least, people who feel the need to show entrepreneurs thanks and respect for their achievements can take to social media to spread awareness about National Entrepreneur’s Day, so it can one day become a real holiday. Everyone knows the power of the internet, so even sharing a simple photo and message from National Entrepreneurs’ Day’s website can help the target of 50,000 votes needed to ask congress to pass the creation of an official National Entrepreneurs’ Day to be hit.

Small Business Saturday

What is Small Business Saturday? According to Wikipedia:

Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after U.S. Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First observed on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.

It seems that people go crazy on the day after Thanksgiving going to the big stores to get special deals, but I think this photo says it best:

I'm starting to buy as many products and services from people running home based businesses. I just became a Melaleuca customer to buy all of my household products from a friend.

During the holiday season, please take a few minutes to visit that small specialty shop near you or shop at the small, neighborhood grocery store. And if you have a friend with a home based business, consider helping them out, too.

Nothing really on my mind today. I'm going to play Robert Kiyosaki's Cashflow game tomorrow. It's a fun game…it teaches the value of residual income and financial freedom. Did you know that financial freedom is not measured in dollars but time? If you were to stop working now, how long would your money last? That's how financially free you are. If you have enough residual income to cover all of your bills without having to work again, then you are financially free. Of course, having more than you need is always good.

I've seen signs for what looks like an interesting museum near where I live now. It's called

Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park

According to Wikipedia:

Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park is a United States national historical park located in Richmond, California, near San Francisco. The park preserves and interprets the legacy of the United States home front during World War II, including the Kaiser Richmond Shipyards, the Victory ship Red Oak Victory, a tank factory, housing developments and other facilities built to support America's entry into World War II. In particular, the role of women and African-Americans in war industries is explored and honored.

Here's the link if you want to learn more about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Rosie_the_Riveter/World_War_II_Home_Front_National_Historical_Park

Today's blog post is a re-tasked Facebook post from my friend Linda Arrowwood, who re-tasked it from someone else, who probably re-tasked it from someone else. I don't know who created it but I thought I'd share it with you.

Just imagine...you are sitting on a park bench, looking across the lake and dreaming of what could be. You look over and you are sharing the bench with a man of vision. A man that is looking to build a billion dollar company from his own dream. Let's just call him Kody B. He offers you a business partnership where you can use his company's name, his warehouse, and his distribution process so you won't ever have to stock up on products or worry about finding time to deliver them.

He tells you that he will provide you with all the technology, training and resources to become a business owner. Plus he will show you how to condense 30 years of a conventional career into 3-5 years of part time work.

Then he tells you that YOU can now be your own boss and be in charge of your own life. Better yet, you will be the one to decide on how much money you want to make.

And just when you think it can't get any more intriguing, he says... Imagine, for a few moments, living your life on YOUR own terms… freedom to come and go as you please, traveling, supporting the causes you care about in a significant manner, buying that dream purchase and to be able to never miss a moment with your children.

You are going to love this 5 minute message. Listen anonymously to hear more about what this business is all about…..I recommend that you dial into a free number, 800-985-1812 to hear a recorded call (call anytime). Don't let fear keep you from something amazing! This has been and will continue to be life changing for me! It could be for you, too. Please join us. Message me with any questions or comments. Wednesday, November 5, 2014

I'm going to share a few things that I've learned about selling door to door. Most of it will be "book learning" although I do have a little practical experience. Most of this should apply whether you are going to homes or businesses.

Door to door selling seems to be making a comeback. The do not call law has made it more difficult for telemarketers. Plus, if you're like me and have caller ID, if I don't recognize a phone number I let it go to voice mail. If it's a telemarketer they usually don't leave a message. Also, most email marketing attempts either end up in the spam folder or just ignored. And door to door is a more personal approach, and in our very impersonal world, that can be seen as a positive thing.

1. Look professional. You are more likely to be invited in if you look pleasant

2. Don't try to sell at the door. Try to strike up a conversation. The goal is to get invited in so that you can show your product or talk about your service.

I know that when I was selling vacuum cleaners and when my son Danny was selling vacuum cleaners, we went door to door hanging fliers offering a free gift if the person called to schedule an appointment. In my case, it was a range of gifts, although 99% of the time it was a pair of cheap kitchen knives, and in Danny's case they were offering an air freshener (which I have and still often use). So, this is a way of getting invited inside. But unless you have a small gift to offer this won't work.

3. Don't just jump into your demo. Find something to comment on in the home or office. If it's on display, it's something that they're interested in. It may be art, or little knick-knacks. I went on one call with Danny to offer moral support. The homeowners had Disney stuff all over the living room. I told them (honestly) that I love Disney and that I went to Disneyland for my 50th birthday and had a great time. That relaxed them and made it easier to show how the vacuum worked.

4. Keep them engaged. Ask them questions. Ask about them, their work, family, etc. But also ask them questions about the product or service.Ask them what they like or don't like. If you've shared some info with them, ask them about that to see if they recall. It's not a test, but it helps keep them engaged.

5. Share yourself. Tell them why you got started doing what you're doing. Talk about your background. People are more likely to buy from a person and not a selling machine.

6. End with a call to action. Tell them what the next step is. People won't take the next step if they don't know what it is.

I hope this was helpful. Below are some links that I found on the subject. Please, if you have any questions or comments, use the comment box below.

Another Facebook post recycled…I mean re-tasked.

Your job?

Does your job give you the time and financial freedom that you want? Neither does mine.

Does your job leave you feeling fulfilled at the end of the day? Neither does mine.

Is your job filled with positive, uplifting people who want to help you succeed? Neither is mine.

Does your job allow you to get a promotion whenever you want one? Neither does mine.

Will your job continue paying you after you quit working and allow you to maintain your current, or even a better, lifestyle? Neither will mine.

However, my business does all of this. And more. If you'd like to start a business like this, contact me.

Interesting days

Today - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/deviled-egg-day/ Darn! I guess I'm not getting any today

Tomorrow - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/sandwich-day/ I just had one, but I suppose I can have another tomorrow

Next Sunday - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/tongue-twister-day/ Peter Piper sells pickled seashells?

December 2 - https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/giving-tuesday/ It's also Fritter Day, but I have no idea what that is. Except you shouldn't fritter it away
