The 4 Levels of Competence

In his book "Promptings" Kody Bateman talks about being a Level 4 Card Sender, but what does that mean?

There are 4 Levels of Competence:

1. Unconscious Incompetence: You don't know that you don't know
2. Conscious Incompetence: You know that you don't know
3. Conscious Competence: You know that you know
4. Unconscious Competence: You don't know that you know

So for Kody being a Level 4 Card Sender means that he doesn't have to think about sending cards, he just does it. He also talks about being a Level 4 at tying shoes (bunny ear method, but only a Level 3 at the "standard" method).

For shoe tying it's fairly easy to see the levels:

1. You're really young and have no awareness of your shoes being tied.
2. You know somebody is tying your shoes for you.
3. You learn to tie your own shoes, but it takes intense concentration.
4. You can tie your shoes without thinking about it.

When I was a Level 3 at shoe tying, I figured out a way to be able to wear my favorite cowboy shirt every day…I would only tie my shoes if I got to wear my shirt. However, my shirt ended up in the garbage and I still had to tie my shoes every day.

Look at all the things you do in your life and decide what level you are and then decide if that's the level you want to be at.

The Johari Window

Loosely related to the 4 Levels of Competence is the Johari Window, but instead of measuring skills it measures characteristics. Again there are conscious and unconscious attributes but they refer to self and others.

You pick 5-6 adjectives from a list that you feel best describe you and you get others to do the same for themselves as well as for you.

Here is an online example that I've started for myself. You can go and pick the 5-6 words that you think best describe me. http://kevan.org/jh/ricktompkins

Here's a post from a couple of months ago in honor of Tick Tock Day.

You still have a couple of days to get all of your goats in a row.

Success = Strategy X Execution

I saw this "equation" a couple of years ago on the internet. I like it since it's pretty simple. Before we look at it more, let's break it down and define the 3 words in it.

From www.dicationary.com:

noun

1.
the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one's goals.

strategy

noun
4.
a plan, method, or series of maneuvers or stratagems for obtaining a specific goal or result:
a strategy for getting ahead in the world.

execution

noun

1.
the act or process of executing.

verb (used with object)executed, executing.

1.
to carry out; accomplish:
to execute a plan or order.

(I can't get this back over to the left margin!)

To accomplish your goals, you need a plan and you need to carry out your plan.

So, where do goats fit in?

GOATS is an acronym for Goals, Objectives, Activities, Tasks, Strategies

Goals are end results that you want to achieve.
Objectives are sub goals with measurable outcomes that are expected to get you to your goals.
Activities/Tasks are actions you take to support your goals and objectives.
Strategies are your methods for achieving your goals and objectives.
Goals can be divided into short-term, intermediate-term and long-term. And you can divide the timeframes up according to your needs such as short-term: less than 5 years, intermediate-term: 5-10 years and long-term more than 10 years. Personally, I prefer 1 or 2 years for short-term, 3-5 years for intermediate-term and more than 5 years for long-term.
A goal is a basic description of what you want to accomplish. Most people talk about SMART goals, but in this example a SMART goal would actually be an objective.
An example goal may be to lose weight before your high school reunion. The associated objective would be to lose 25 pounds in the next 5 months. The activities or tasks would depend on the strategy you use to reach your objectives. In the weight loss example there are 2 main strategies…diet and exercise and you can choose to implement one or both. So, if you want to exercise as your strategy, your activities may be go to the gym 4-5 days a week.
For a personal example my long term goal is to be successful with my business and a short term goal would be to show my business to 1,000 people. I'd like to do this before next year's convention in September, so my objective is to show the business to 1,000 people in the next 10 months…or 100 people per month. With an average of 20 business days per month, my task is to show the business to 5 people a day. Notice that this doesn't mean to contact 5 people, it means to get 5 people to agree to watch the videos.
If I accomplish my daily task of showing the videos to 5 people I will accomplish my objective which will get me closer to my goal. Success!

Happy Kwanzaa!

From Wikipedia:

Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held in the United States and also celebrated in the Western African diaspora in other nations of the Americas. The celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture, and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving.[1] Kwanzaa has seven core principles (Nguzo Saba). It was created by Maulana Karenga, and was first celebrated in 1966–67.

Also from Wikipedia:

Kwanzaa celebrates what its founder called the seven principles of Kwanzaa, or Nguzo Saba (originally Nguzu Saba—the seven principles of African Heritage), which Karenga said "is a communitarian African philosophy," consisting of what Karenga called "the best of African thought and practice in constant exchange with the world." These seven principles comprise *Kawaida, a Swahili term for tradition and reason. Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the following principles, as follows:
  • Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems, and to solve them together.
  • Nia (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  • Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • Imani (Faith): To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
Kwanzaa symbols include a decorative mat (Mkeka) on which other symbols are placed, corn (Muhindi) and other crops, a candle holder kinara with seven candles (Mishumaa Saba), a communal cup for pouring libation (Kikombe cha Umoja), gifts (Zawadi), a poster of the seven principles, and a black, red, and green flag. The symbols were designed to convey the seven principles.

Mr. Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary and yet somehow lovable.

That is the first sentence of "The Strange Tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson. A great book, you may say, but why am I quoting it here?

Because it reminds me of another book with a similar title, "The Creature from Jekyll Island" by G. Edward Griffin, which tells the story of the creation of the Federal Reserve System which came into existence on December 23, 1913…101 years ago.

Here is the first sentence from "The Creature from Jekyll Island",

The secret meeting on Jekyll Island in Georgia at which the Federal Reserve was conceived; the birth of a banking cartel to protect its members from competition; the strategy of how to convince Congress and the public that this cartel was an agency of the United States government.

I think they've accomplished the latter point pretty well. The Federal Reserve is as much a part of the government as Federal Express.

I'm not an expert on this subject, and I need to do a lot more research, but it seems interesting to me that the monetary supply of the United States is controlled by a handful of private bankers and not the government.

However, my understanding is that it's not a coincidence that the Federal Income Tax was also created in 1913. The government ran fine without a federal income tax until the Federal Reserve was created. In fact, your tax dollars do not fund the government but is used to pay principal and interest to the Fed, since the Fed doesn't create those dollars for free, but loans them to the government and charges them interest for it. Also, the Fed is the only for profit business in America that pays absolutely no taxes!

I've got the day off from both jobs today! I worked 4 10's with AT&T from 6 AM to 4:30 PM…that was awfully early for a person used to working at night. And I worked 14 hours at UPS. Well, I made it to work ok this morning. There was just a few sprinkles and some wind, but even that wasn't too bad. I did hit a puddle on one of the surface roads in San Pablo, but I was going pretty slow. But I did tense up a little when I hit it for some strange reason.

As far as All About That Bass, Dorian Bartley told me that she's already performing it with two of the other groups that she's in...doRiaN Mode (I haven't asked her about the significance of the capitalization...and I didn't find a link to their website) and Rhythmtown-Jive.

The blog is going to be rather sparse throughout the rest of the month. I'm working at UPS for the holidays, as well as AT&T, so my time is rather limited. I'll try to make posts when I can and I plan on featuring the interesting days everyday.

For those of you who don't know it, I'm all about that bass. This was the 1st version of this song that I heard. I knew the song existed but I ignored it. But I saw this link on a friend's page and checked it out. My friend, Dorian Bartley, plays upright bass and sings in a band called Foxes in the Hen House, so this is perfect for her.

Monday, December 8, 2014

I saw this quote on Facebook the other day:

If you are persistent, you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it

What does that really mean?

According to www.dictionary.com:

persistent

adjective

1. persisting, especially in spite of opposition, obstacles, discouragement, etc.; persevering:

a most annoyingly persistent young man.

persist

verb (used without object)

1. to continue steadfastly or firmly in some state, purpose, course of action, or the like, especially in spite of opposition, remonstrance, etc.:

to persist in working for world peace; to persist in unpopular political activities.

consistent

adjective

2. constantly adhering to the same principles, course, form, etc.:

a consistent opponent.

So, if you want something badly enough, don't give up until you get it. Even if it seems that the universe is conspiring against you. But once you get it, you can't ignore it. To hang onto whatever it is that you wanted, you have to keep doing the same things that brought it to you in the first place.

In business, and selling especially, most people give up too soon.

  • 48% of sales people never follow up with a prospect
  • 25% of sales people make a second contact and stop
  • 12% of sales people only make three contacts and stop
  • Only 10% of sales people make more than three contacts
  • 2% of sales are made on the first contact
  • 3% of sales are made on the second contact
  • 5% of sales are made on the third contact
  • 10% of sales are made on the fourth contact
  • 80% of sales are made on the fifth to twelfth contact

  • As you can see, 90% of purchases are made after the 4th contact, but only 10% of sales people are persistent enough to make that many contacts.

Another statistic I've heard before, and was reiterated by Casey Eberhart at our SendOutCards event in Fresno on Saturday.

You lose 10% of your influence for every month that you don't have contact with your client

Once you have a client or customer, you have to consistently reach out to them every month or two, or every quarter at the least, to let them know that they still matter to you.

Here are some stats on why customers leave:

4% due to natural attrition (moved away – passed on, etc)
5% are referred to a competitor by their friend
9% for competitive reasons (price point, product features, etc.)
    14% because of product/service dissatisfaction
    68% for Perceived Indifference

    So remember:

If you are persistent, you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it

This doesn't just apply to business, but to everything in life. Now go get it!

How much money does the average person make in network marketing?

$0.00. The average person doesn't make any money in network marketing. In fact, the average person usually doesn't even get involved with network marketing. Why not?

    Because the average person:
    • watches 5 hours of TV a day
    • spends an hour a day on the Internet using a computer
    • spends another hour a day on the Internet using a smartphone or tablet
    • listens to the radio almost 3 hours a day
That adds up to nearly 10 hours a day, which doesn't leave much time for those minor inconveniences such as sleep, work, meals and family.

The problem with network marketing for the average person is the work part of network...it's called net WORK marketing, not net SIT around and wait for the money to come rolling in marketing. Even though it's not a lot of work, in most cases 5-20 hours per week, that would mean giving up some TV or Internet or maybe a meal!

But all is not lost! If you're average, but not content to be average, it's possible to change. But you will need to reduce some time to the other things in your life (preferably the TV, radio and/or Internet...not sleep, family or meals).

Take some time and review my blogs on vision, mission and goats here. And then find a network marketing company you like and leave average behind.

    December is Tie Month!

There's an interesting article on Wikipedia about the history and types of ties; such as ascot, bow, bolo, etc. As well as different types of "regimental" ties. But more interesting was the fact that it was shown mathematically that there are 85 Ways to Tie a Tie but of those 85 ways, there are only 13 that are considered to be "aesthetic knots" suitable for use. A couple of the more popular knots are the 4-in-hand (#2 in the book) and the Half-Windsor (#7). And yes, I've requested the book from the library.
